What do you want from teachers/course/etc.?
waylander replied to Stub Mandrel's topic in Theory and Technique
For me it’s someone who looks longer term then the next song I’ve got as homework. i think it comes from past experience as the teacher I had several years back was focused purely on the song as a way to help me learn to play. This was great at the time, being able to learn to play Muse, The Darkness etc that I thought were well beyond my reach. But he didn’t address any core skills like knowing the neck, my technique and I didn’t deviate from my preferred music genre. ive got lessons now with a different teacher and it’s very different. He uses rock school grade books as a basis for lessons and I’m working at a grade 3 book. He’s picked up I struggle with off beats and threw me into jazz songs initially to get me away from rock. I struggled big time with them even trying by ear as the rhythms different. It’s slow going and I think we’ll be in grade 3 for a long time yet, but I’m noticing a difference in my understanding of music and my confidence with it too. In the long term I think it’s going to help me be able to actually play bass instead of play a certain song. -
Nah didn’t put me off, gave me an incentive to come back truth be told, my wife just gets this glazed over look when I try to talk to her about bass. 🤣

Hey everyone im actually a long time inactive lurker recently returned to the world of bass so I thought I’d say hi as it’s been a decade. Hopefully that’s alright please delete if not. Sadly haven’t played much in the last 10 years. Work and adult life got in the way, but my long term goal was to return to bass and learn again when I’d finished studying my professional qualification. The ends now in sight but a certain pandemic and fracturing my foot during lockdowns meant ive come back sooner to stay sane. Loving being back playing the bass, currently taking lessons with a teacher via zoom (due to not being able to walk far). Currently learning the more technical side of music and expanding what types of music I play as I was siloed into rock for most of the time I played. im also trying to self teach myself slap from online videos so if anyone’s got any tips or advice for a total beginner to getting started they’re very welcome! current set up epiphone thunderbird bass ashdown studio 8 and Peavey Max 158 combo amps Ehx Bass preacher & Darkglass B3K v1 pedals

Bc Rich Warbeast - Amp lead socket issue
waylander replied to waylander's topic in Repairs and Technical
Yes sorry i meant nut. Yes it does have a retaining plate, i will have a look at that -
Hey all after some advice I have a Bc Rich Warbeast Trace. Occasionally when i pull the lead out of the guitar after practice the bolt holding the socket in place comes off and the socket itself goes up into the guitar. Its a pain then using tweezers to pull it out and reattach the bolt. I've tried using plyers to tighten it, tried being more careful removing the lead but still happens eventually, fairly certain this shouldnt happen as much as it does, or at all Anyone got any ideas?
One little test that you could do for us right now - with your left hand, hold down a string (any string really) at the first fret. With your right elbow, hold the same string down at the top of the fretboard (so the 20th fret or whatever). Look closely at the spacing between the string and the frets. Is the string touching any of the frets (you can use the fingers on your right hand to push the string down and see if it moves)? Ideally, there should be a slight curve in the neck so that the string isn't touching any of the frets, but sufficiently slight that the gap is no more than a millimetre or two. I hope this makes sense. S.P.
ye they were, i got someone else to look at it and he sorted it out abit for free, dnt get much fret buzz now wen i used fingers to play, still get alot wen i use a pick but i think tht might be cause im not used to the loweness of the action and just need to get used to not using the pick so hard
If you went in there and said "please lower the action" then they did what you told them to. I suggest you go back, grovel profusely, and say "sorry, I asked for the wrong thing, I didn't want the action lowered, I wanted the fret buzz curing". If you're lucky, they'll take pity on you. However, if you initially asked them to cure the fret buzz, then you're within your rights to demand a full refund. S.P.
thanks for the advice, i havent been playin bass long, and this is first musical intrument i have owned so im still adjusting to it all n kinda took wat my teacher said on face value
-
o!! sorry didnt understand tht first was meant like so best course would then be to get action higher again then
-
haha my bass teacher didnt do the work, i took it to a place called project music in exeter where they did the work and kinda did spend some money lol
-
Hey guys Ive always had slight fret buzz when playin my guitar but put thtat down to my lack of experience at playing, and it not being a great guitar ( i have a Gear 4 Music 4 string bass). but my bass teacher suggested i got the action lowered as it was quite high and he thought that might reduce the buzz. so took it to a music shop and got them to lower the action for me, trouble is since i got it home its WORSE!!! if i try and play any string on the 1st to 5th frets i get alot of buzz and then frets after that is on and off. Any suggestions or thoughs ? (other then buy a better guitar :-p)
