What I'd really like to know tho is who here thinks Alex James is a good bass player? Obviously within the context of the whole indie/pop/rock genre, he must be considered somewhat better than his peers.
I find him bog standard to be honest. Then again so were his 'peers'. I mean, Matt Osman, Steve Mackey, Paul McGuigan, Annie Holland, Mick Quinn............ None of them spring to mind as outstanding bassists. I'd stick them all in the Adam Clayton/Michael Anthony pile.
I'm curious as to why they bothered with a tigerstripe ebony board....
I'm curious why they bothered at all?

Try a bit of closed cell foam. IME it works great and its usually easy to find. Try a craft supply store or somewhere that sells fly tying products

Cant beat the LH series for simplicity IMO. The range of tones is massive. I use the 500 and its plenty loud in large venues. With a 4ohm 8x10 I havent pushed it past 3. Couldnt recommend them enough.

The last few moments of the solo in Still in Love with You (live&dangerous version). Epic guitar work.
If I was in this band and read your post, I would be a little concerned. When you join a band it's generally the case that you will be expected to fit in with them, and not them with you. Does this band know about your nifty pedal work? Is that why they've asked you? If no, then I'd back off with the pedals or you'll probably find your time with the band short lived.
Aye. Very well put. Even if a multitude of fx units sounds good in the band it might not be what they want. Indie/Alt rock doesnt seem to be the place for it IMO but then again you could stumble onto something very unique sounding. Beware of the guitarist(s). They dont like being outdone in the fx department. I very nearly got the bullet from one band for using a Uni Vibe and Big Muff during an outro solo...............
Strange, on the youtube vid it sounded significantly larger than the boss... maybe I should just get both
You could. The MXR has a lot of high end with the gain at maximum. I've the distortion on constantly, set to about 2 O'Clock but the blend is ~95% clean 5% grit. Sounds great boosting a wah pedal.
Alien Ant Farm - Flesh and Bone Excellent bassline, going to do attitude next.
Fantastic basslines on almost every song on that album. Seriously underrated bass player. Epic tone too.

Alternatives to drums as percussion in a band setting
Mog replied to rOB's topic in Other Instruments
A good cajon and hand cymbals are fine normally. The guy who plays with Ryan Sheridan is a beast. -
Yea Mandolin Cafe is the one I use most. If theres something I cant find I usually just have a look at the guitar chords and work it out from there.

A lot of the 'issues' with Squier comes from gear snobbery. Almost all of the Squiers I've tried have been fine instruments for the money. The higher up the range you go the better they get, sometimes overtaking MIM in terms of quality. If you can get to a well stocked dealer try as many as you can. Buying a Squier/MIM is kinda like buying a Les Paul. The differences between each is massive. A modded CV or VM Squire will usually sound as good as a stock MIM. I'll also give a +1 to Yamahas. Fantastic basses.
I assume this is same as you when 'layering' as you put it. As you say, you can get a mix to work with, and adds depth to the overall fuzz tone.
Pretty much lad.

The spring installment of the Siege of Limerick is on it's way. Sunday the 8th of April 2012 Dolans Warehouse, ... The Dock rd. Limerick 12pm - 2.30am FREE Headliners Altar of Plagues Altar of Plagues was formed in 2006. Terms that are most frequently used to describe their sound include black metal, ambient and progressive or post metal, though it seems no one description can sum up the acts massive sound. The act themselves consider black metal to be the genre to which they are most attached, but on the contrary they have also been quoted to take influence from acts as diverse as Emperor, Bjork, and Arvo Pärt The bands untraditional aesthetic and approach to their music has led to Altar of Plagues appealing to a wide variety of listeners and this may be seen by the diverse range of acts Altar of Plagues have toured with, including Isis and Mayhem, as well as having appeared at festivals that focus on ‘extreme’ metal and festivals that encourage experimentation and diversity. Following the release of only one demo and an EP, Altar of Plagues signed to Canadian label, Profound Lore Records. In 2009 the act released "White Tomb", an album that was described by a number of critics as one of 2009's best and most exciting releases (and was featured in Decibel Magazines Best of 2009 list). Last year saw the band tour extensively throughout Europe, and now 2010 is proving to be an even more promising year for the act, with a forthcoming E.P release on Roadburn Records as well as receiving an invitation to perform at the renowned Roadburn Festival. 2011 saw AOP release their now critically acclaimed album 'Mammal'.
Any thoughts on the MXR m80? EQ and Distortion seems like a bit of a bonus
Wouldnt do for a HUGE OD/Distortion. Its a great pedal but not for that type of application.
-
Please ignore, rushing around like an idiot and hit the wromg section
-
Some sort of OTT distortion and a synth/octave are called for methinks.......... Fuzz generally dies in the mix so I'd stay away from most units. I really like the MXR Blowthorch as it has a very useable blend control. Maybe team that with an OC-3 or something?
Anyone tried the WH Swollen Pickle?
Tried one for a solid month and couldnt get on with it. Found it next to impossible to get a mix that was usable in a band situation. Thats mainly the reason I'm 'layering' fuzz units at the mo.
Looks very similar to an ACG Gallus (sp?) crossed with a Sandberg
Aye, with a bit o wick thrown in also. Stunning bass. Are the electronics the same as/similar to the Human Base Roxy? Maybe its just me?

I've never been a fan of elixers TBH. There is great durability in them but the out of the packet tone is just waaay too dull for my taste. Give them a go I say. Once bitten and all that......... These new DR Dragon Skins are supposedly the mutt if you believe the blurb.

1964Ears. Pricey but worth it. If you can find an audiologist to mould them for you you're sorted.

Weeeelllllll, no. It gives two 100watt speakers. My understanding is (and this is in no way a qualified response) that each cab will recieve an equal load from the head. So, if the head is rated 300 watts @4ohms you will get the following results: If that pdf doesnt explain it give me a shout. Edit: Sorry put that together on the fly and didnt pay much attention to formatting, shocking layout.

Very different heads in many ways. Personally I'd be looking at a GK RB700 and upwards, which should cover your needs. The Ashdowns are very usable without being standout which is fine with me. I have a major graw against the Terror. It does one thing really well, probably better than a lot of amps which can cost a hell of a lot more, and fails miserably at just about everything else.

Never had the problem with mine TBH. Is it an actual distortion or rapid intermittent signal loss? Run through your set up to exclude bass, leads and pedals. If its still there and the signal chain is sound try switching between the passive/active inputs and keep an eye on the clip indicators. If that doesn't work then vary the gain and turbo control as they are very sensitive. If the problem is still there it could be a fault with the speaker on/off switch. You could also try plugging into the fx return to check if the speakers are in good order. If you do this start with the fx blend at minimum and dial in the signal slowly. Heres the manual if you need it. http://www.bassemporium.com/pdfs/swrsuperredhead.PDF (The controls on the Redhead are very sensitive and interactive so keep a good eye on the pre and power clip indicators. Also make sure they are working by intentionally driving each into clipping buy only do this with the speaker feed off).
