1. Nonsense 2. Nonsense 3. Nonsense
How so? What regularly gigging band is going to hire someone who cant play the gig after a certain time, cant do a share of the driving, raises insurance premiums and less face it HAS ABOUT 30 YEARS LESS EXPERIENCE THAN MOST PIT PLAYERS. Unless most pit players, session musicians etc age in dog years most I've met/know are between 30-50 and to take their jobs would require serious talent. The guy is 15. Has been fed god knows what by a local teacher and expects to walk into a regularly paying job within the music business. Come on lad. I didn't suggest that he should drop the bass and take up golf or anything. Each point was based on fact. And just to be clear, if you're response is based on 'personal experience' I dont really give a poop, telling someone to get a proper steady job is not nonesense, its common sense. Be specific, I'm in nicotine withdrawal and need a rant. -
Torque 100 watt 1x15 combo and a Hohner Lx90B. Still use that bass sometimes, as good a mex-p. Pity the stuff from Hohner has taken a turn for the worst. Even their Harmonica range has lost some of its quality. Current rig is dependent on venue. Bass wise its mostly the Yamaha BB5g.
Hi Mog. So have I made the right decision ? Have you tried a Nuke ?
I reckon you'll be very happy with the Orange, as most people are. I'm just an anal freak when it comes to hybrid heads. Just tried the BVP550. Nice tones. Great Eq section. The Nuke is a gimmick. As are most 1k+ watt heads IMO. +1 re the ohm selector switch.
Um, hello, this is hard for me to really get across well. I'm 15 and reliseing that playing bass is really what I want to do in life. I've been playing for less than three years but I'm like above grade 6 standard, I read sheet music (three days locked in my room), I'm playing in a band (how many 15 year old boys don't?), I'm playing in a jazz band (accredited by local big boys as the best ever school band they have heard), I'm playing scores for big bands and in a school production of Bugsy Malone and taking as many chance as I possibly can (which ain't many in rural Norfolk ). Oh I'm also taking theory lessons and DB lessons. (Blowing my own trumpet, described as 'highly gifted' and the 'best bass student I've taught') So anyway, it's really frustraiting 'cause I see all this insane bas players, more than a few of them preside on this here sight, and I go to myself how do they get there, I woodshed day in day out I listen to whatever the hell I can lay my hands on... So yeh, what I'm trying to say is that I want your help. I want to know where you learnt stuff like how to play over chord changes, how to construct walking bass lines, what to listen to and how to survive in the music industry. (Also if you live/have knoledge of the Norwich/South Norfolk music scene where I could get gigs or go see decent jazz stuff etc.) I know I'm over stepping the line putting all this stuff up here and expecting you to reply, but I'm coming through in the generation of tab and eighth notes, not transcribing and quavers, so please help, cause I want to be part of the future of bass and I don't want that future to be bland, dire infact, because so many other elements of music nowadays are. Thanks.
3 suggestions. 1 Forget about it for a year or two because at 15 you aint going to get a serious job. Focus on getting laid more. 2 Forget about it for a year or two because at 15 you're around 30 years less experienced than most session and pit bassists. Focus on beer more. 3 Forget about it for a year or two because at 15 you still dont have any type of University/collage qualifications that will actually get you into the situation you want to be in. And when you do get it theres always someone better than you. Focus on getting a sustainable income before banking on an income from music. And just to clarify theres nothing wrong with tab and eight notes. Statements like that just put people off giving you a job. -
just bought my first 5 string....a peavey grind....any views anybody?? not sure if ive done right thing....love the playability...neck ect.....but always been squier/fender man.....think i was swayed for something a little diffrent....would like any views of any grind players.....thanx bob.
I've only played one for a few minutes in one of the music rooms in Uni but they seem like great basses for the price. Peavey basses usually are a safe bet.
I knew no-one would like the Bugera. Anyway, I bought the terror base 500 yesterday - couldn't wait for the 1000, and probably would have been too much anyway. Only playing pubs, etc. But the new band's lead g has a Marshall full stack. So hopefully I'll be ok. I'm using two purple chili 1 x 12 cabs, 300 w each, but I've changed the speaker in one to an eminence 450 w - 3012 LF.
Good stuff, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. On the Bugera side of things I have to say I love their guitar heads. I also think the Orange Terror is one of the most lifeless heads I've played through so what do I know
There is a video of Marcus on bassplayer.com where he says spend no more than 6 months on your tone and move on. If his aunt bought him a Stingray instead that would be his tone. His tone quest was to play whatever he got as a gift. So if someone really wants to be just like that bass hero ask for a new bass for xmas and learn to play whatever you get. Maybe one day you'll change a crap bass into one worth thousands like Marcus did.
Cool, so are you just pointing that out or what? I dont get what I'm supposed to take from the post.

Wow, the only problem I've had with planetwaves cables is that the ones I owned were too short. Not a fault for over 10 years. A lot of that was into the Streamer too.
I run mine through a Bareface Big One, also at standard pub gigs. I normally have G = 4 and V = 2 to get a nice gritty sound. Any more than that and my lead guitarsehole (playing through a Marshall 212 combo, I should point out) complains that he can't hear himself.
Ah, I see you got one of those fancy house trained guitarists. Really must get one of those.
I think you're missing the point of my argument. If we all sounded the same you would be right. I believe there are people out there who are buying this and buying that in some misplaced belief that they going to one day reach that "Tone Nirvana". The point that they've been searching all their lives for. Does this ever happen? So we loved Geddy Lee's Rick sound then we argue whether he used the Rick or whether he had moved to the jazz for a certain record. People on the forum buy 4x10s and then sell them to buy 15s in their search. Its this minutiae that I don't get. A dub sound is dub sound to me. In a live setting I couldn't tell Mr Xs dub sound from Mr Y's dub sound. Not that I listen to dub so maybe that's a bad example. If I hear Harris I know its Harris - does he change his gear every few weeks in an effort to get it closer to what's in his head or did he find a sound that he liked very early in his career and just run with it? What about Jaco, did he try this and that filler for his frets and this and that coating or did he just pull the frets, fill coat the board and think wow that sounds interesting.
I get what you're saying lad. I reckon you're on to something WRT the search for an elusive sound but if people didn't go after That sound in their heads we wouldn't have those really great bass tones. Timmy C, Phillip Bynoe, Justin Chancellor, Flea, Nathan East, Rob Trujillo, Marcus Miller...the list is endless.

that should work fine. you wont get the full 500 watts out of the head but you wont need it unless the guitarist(s) are running at idiotic levels. those mag cabs have a nice low end. great for the price imo.

Theres no way I can agree with the OP, thats right up there with what bass sounds best for metal. The whole 'My Tone' thing is whats makes us individual. Imagine if all basses had that farty Jaco tone or Victors monotone, dynamically dead twang?
I want something loud, so I was going to get a Bugera Nuke, but am now thinking of the Orange terror bass, the 1000 due out in January. Or is there anything better for £400 ?
Yea the 500 watt terror, but they're usually around £470. Save yourself £100, you honestly wont miss the extra 3dB.

Another +1 for the Nathan East sig. Almost perfect.
I think a good bassist should be fluent in fingers and pick, fingers purists are just as bad to me as people who only play with a pick. It may just be me, but they're completely different techniques and sound.
Well said that man.

How do you react when the engineer doesn't do your set-up as you want?
Mog replied to ThomBassmonkey's topic in Recording
As above, its fine as a reference for what you would want to do in an album situation but as a release for promo it needs a lot more work. I wouldnt release something with less than 6 guitar tracks, excluding solos, per song. Your recorded material is the reference most used by the public and industry, therefore it pays to get the best product possible.Your band has catchy tunes, dont let something you have control over lessen the quality. The band I'm in at the mo were happy to just record anywhere over 2-3 days and put out rough sounding ep's and demos with some poor quality content on some. As a result they were slated, and that stigma still surrounds the band to a large degree. When I joined I put across the same ideas as above and tried to improve the song structures, and as a result the number of positive remarks and reviews has been staggering. Bands Debut Album review. (All songs were wrote after I joined) Compared to Ep Review (before I joined and as a 4 piece) -
Pitch shifting should go after tuner, and try dist before wah/filters.
Aye a nice OD before the wah can really give the tone a kick in the arse. Wasn't that EVH's prefered set up?

1. How hard do you dig in with the pick? Depends on whats needed but its usually louder than fingerstyle. 2.What are your favourite pick guages and materials? Scratchy seems to be a recurring theme here - I guess this is down to poor technique? We've an endorsement so its cant really comment on brands. Thickness wise I go for around 1mm. Nylon is good for a tone with less attack. Delrin for clicky/hard attack. EDIT: Sorry forgot to answer the second part. The scratching comes from the angle of attack, ie the strings and pick edge. Learn how to get different ammounts of scratch into your sound as it can be usefull at times. 3. How hard do you grip the pick and how flexible are your finger and thumb? In other words do you let the pick move relative to your finger and thumb or is there no movement at all? Thumb and Index finger for a firm but flexable grip. Most of the movement comes from my wrist with a little from the pick fingers. 4. For funkier lines, how much palm muting do you use? My pick technique comes from my guitar days. I use Hammetts extended pinky technique for muting. I just lay it across the bridge saddles and apply muting to the strings individually when required. This is where wrist+finger movement comes into its own. Just remember that its not an acoustic guitar. No strumming required.

Splitting singal and using guitar amp and cab for second channel.
Mog replied to D-L-B's topic in Amps and Cabs
no need for a xover. unless you are running serious synths through the guitar cab it should be fine. if thats the case then hook up a bass cab to the guitar head. -
