Dont have one lad but I played one about a year ago when we had a few shows with Italian Doomsters Misty Morning. Proper vintage job. Great neck, really comfortable and fast too. What I found surprising was the weight, a bit more than I expected. Tone wise it was a little limited but the sound is unmistakable, went very well with a crybaby and overdrive. Overall it was a smashing bass. Personally I'd prefer the ESP/Ltd Viper. More tonal options and the slightly offset body sits better. Might be worth a shot?

4x12 in a pubrock band? sorry but he sounds like a tosser. theres no way i could play in that band.yea, i'd be telling them to get the money you're owed and cut butt.

Sounds like an a noob mistake. Start with bassdrum levels. In most pubs thats all that needs to be mic'd Get it mixed with the kit. Then bass, slightly above bassdrum level. Guitars are next, blended into the mix. Then vocals. If the vocal is lost and theres no more head room, lower the instruments, either from the desk if everything is mic'd/DI'd or at the amps if not. Simples. Whats the backline?

Aint Laney reintroducing the HH brand? Though Pete had a thread about it a few months back.

The tu-80 is a nice bit of kit but personally i'd get a pedal tuner, either a korg or boss. both excellent. For adding colour to you're sound I'd suggest a chorus pedal as a first buy, then maybe an octaver. Work you're way up to the "harsher" fx like synths gradually. Theres nothing worse than too many fx going on at once.
I suppose it's a bit like the old joke of Slipknot basslines being written in binary. There's a lot of Saturday afternoon thumb going on, where it's more akin to fretw***ery than musicality. Every one in the shop, who didn't see your flawless technique, is pretty much convinced you dropped the bass; now can I have a go, please?
Priceless!

How do you react when the engineer doesn't do your set-up as you want?

just been talking to the other two guys in the band. it seems we're going down the analogue road with the one. everything recorded to tape, live takes for that vintage sound. looks like its time to get a 60's pbass and a tv 15. plus a mortgage for mastering! -
anything by the ramones, blink 182 and greenday. system of a down is handy once you are tuned to c
Ed Friedland gets it right, plays the same Riff 10 times, different pickups, tone settings etc with 3 or 4 techniques.
yea Ed is about as good as it gets review wise. One thing that pisses me off though is that he plays through an excellent rig. I wanna see reviews recorded either straight to a console or through a crappy 30 watt 1x0 combo.

a fine bass lad. really like the maple and block inlays

I'm either on the neck pup or the edge of the neck for fingerstyle. Works for me as i find it most comfortable during long sets. Its a matter of finding what works best for you. Where you rest your thumb is only maybe 60% of the battle when playing at high tempos. The rest comes from stamina, dexterity and accuracy. IMO thats why its uber important to have a comfortable hand position.

Cheers guys, some nice ideas there.

Theres a well known shop in Dublin thats been doing some thing similar for years. Re-brandings been around for ages.
As per title really, just saw someone else (who uses quite an extravagant recording set-up to be fair ) say that with a new engineer they probably won't be able to use it? What do you do when a sound engineer says no? It's happened to me a couple of times, I play a 'wick through a GK, so it's a pretty distinctive sounding set-up, the last couple of times I've been in the studio the engineer's DI'd me with a Sansamp and sent a link through to the amp (just on distortion last time) then mic'd the cab. I trust that he's going to get a brilliant sound so I haven't made too much of a fuss (though I have made a point of telling him I wasn't too impressed) but it's annoying that instead of sounding like my rig (especially when I'm a GK endorsee), it's just another Sansamp DI'd tone. The worst part is that he wasn't even prepared to try my rig (I had to put my foot down to get it on the recording at all), it just struck me as lazy because he wanted me to just plug into the DI on whatever settings he always uses and get it done.
I reckon thats me! Not really uncommon in the metal circles to record highs through a guitar head. I'd love to say feck off too but time and cash are against us on this one so i suppose I just have to deal with it. I agree with the lads though, if you're paying for it, its your call. -
Almost time to hit the studio again. This time around we're planning on using a different engineer and producer. However I'm fairly picky when it comes to recording as you'll see....... Usually my sound comes from a blend of direct bass, a reamped signal through a JCM 900 into a gk goldline miked with a bog standard SM57 and a reamped signal through the TE into an Ampeg 4x10 with a Ribbon(+ pop filter) mike at the cone and an AKG D 11 at the port. Sounds tricky I know but its a good mix. I usually only get away with it when recording with our usual guy and have lots of time, but with a new engineer time may be tight and I might not be able to run that set up. So, how do y'all record yer bass tracks? I'm looking for mic suggestions, plugins, anything really.
Ah that may explain it, I use a fairly wide leather strap which is slightly rough on the inside
Thought so, the guitarist I play with uses the same on his SG. Cant take to the way they cling to your clothes. Suppose its like a new pair of underwear, at first its constrictive......
Neckdive? From a pbass? I can guarantee mine has none whatsoever. Nor have any that I recall trying.
All the P's I've come across have, could be because I use a strap with a free running shoulder pad. Fairly common complaint IME.
My band is due to start gigging in the new year and were looking to get a PA system What kind of power would we need? We'll be playing pubs and clubs mainly. Also, any brands to recommend??? Cheers, Rob
Really need more info lad, how big are these pubs/clubs? Will you need many aux's? What transport do you have? What budget you have? Basically I'd suggest a 12 channel mixer as a minimum. 1000 watt power amp minimum. A good compression unit. Well matched speakers. (probably as important as power) JBL, Peavey, Alesis, Mackie and Dynacord are all brands I'd recommend.
Hi all Had a chat with Charic about this at the Bash at the weekend & wondered if anyone else has had a similar issue. Have a CV Jazz & after playing for a bit, often have pain in my thumb joint & cramp-like symptoms in my wrist/forearm. Charic advised me that he had had a problem like this but had pretty much eliminated it by swapping his thinner width necked bass for a Fender P with a wider neck. Had a go on his P at the bash (thanks for that mate, much appreciated) & it did feel more comfortable, and the neck did seem to fit my hand size better. However, spoke to my teacher about this & he didn't feel it would make a huge difference if I changed my bass to something with the wider neck as he hadn't heard this from any of his other pupils, and the problems would probably lessen over time with practice and increased stamina in my fretting hand/arm (as I have been playing for less than 2 years). What I don't want to do is buy something else and after a few weeks find that it's made no difference to the issues I've had, so do I try it or perserver with the Jazz neck? Any help given is much appreciated. Pat
Its most likely hand positioning and how the bass is sitting. Each bass is different but none should cause your hand to cramp up to that extent. Where the bass sits on your body has as much influence on strain as fretting hand technique. A P bass neck might have a greater radius but the neck dive is really going to put extra strain on your fretting hand. I suggest trying to as many hand positions and strap lengths as possible until you find a combination that eases the strain. As an aside, can I ask if your fretting hand technique is a result of lessons or are you self thought? I ask because a lad who just started playing bass a few months ago came to me at a gig recently with something very similar. When he showed me his fretting technique which he had picked up from lessons the answer was obvious. His lessons were practiced sitting down and his bass is slung down to his knees when hes playing at home or with the band. I cant understand why supposed teachers never cop onto this?

Just to make it easier on myself I'm only gonna list whats on my gig board at the moment. If I had to go through everything in the collection I'd be here all day! Waiting to stick in a Visual Sounds Angry Fuzz and my OC-2 if I ever get it back from a guy I use to play with. Ibby phat head, works every time for me. Copied this from a review of a gig we did last year, get this a lot re the distortion from the Ibby. Almost everyone seems to like.
Next up were Castero from Tipperary, usually a four piece they stepped out tonight as 3 piece minus their second guitarist. Johhny – Guitar/Vocals, Mog – Bass & Spanner on Drums. The lads had told me before hand that certain songs had to be dropped because of this however it didn't seem to phase them playing as a 3 piece and they went on cranked it up and played a great set. One thing that stood out for me was the dirty fuzzed bass sound which really added that extra touch of power to the songs.
