Had a bit of a technical nightmare on Friday. Current gig is on guitar, but just hear me out anyway. We were band 2 of 4, so no soundcheck, bit of a rush to set up, very dark stage. Plugged in my lovely Fryette head, turned it on to warm it up all good, went about setting up pedals, no problems. I don't have that much crap to plug in, just TU2>Wah>Tubescreamer>Flanger>Delay>Noisegate>Amp. That was fine, had tuned the guitars during the first band's set, plugged in and went to take the amp off standby. No power light. I quickly checked it was securely plugged in at the back. Yes. Made sure it was securely in the plugboard. Yes. Was the power in the plugboard? Yes. sh*t, had I blown a fuse in the amp? Managed to find another IEC cable and plugged it in. On came the power light. Thank f***. OK, let it warm up, took it off standby, started playing. Sounded a bit quiet. I had checked the ohm rating of the cab before I plugged in and adjusted the amp to suit. Still very quiet. Bugger. Made sure the pedals were all securely connected, they were. Clock was ticking. I bypassed the pedals, straight into the amp. There it was. OK, quick check, reseated everything, made sure the power supply for the pedals was properly plugged in, it was. I played again, it finally sounded like it should. At last. Then, a horrible "something electrical is dying" sound... maybe it's the battery in the wah, which wasn't powered off the mains. Even though it was a reasonably new battery I took out the wah, everything sounded fine. I wa still concerned by the power disappearing from the amp but OK, let's start the show. Halfway through the first song, the amp went silent. Hadn't time to troubleshoot, the power light was still on, so I just plugged straight into the amp from the guitar, started working again. It'll do. Got through the rest of the set without any more shenanigans. One of the best crowd reactions we've had, too. I tried plugging the amp in on Saturday using the same IEC lead and plugboard... it worked. I've no idea what happened with the power. Turns out a planet waves lead was behind the lack of volume and then the bizarre electrical noise (which was fine before the gig, I always check everything at home the day before) and that's most likely why the sound died. Still, such dramas make you appreciate the times when everything runs smoothly.
Sounds like Fibbers? Dodgey power in that place. Seen something similar a few times in there.

Haven't come across them myself. Competetive price range the £300-400 bracket. Wonder how they'll fare against GK backline stuff and Ashdown Mags?

Sound like a great pub rig. Interesting.

Basically the neck and the extra options wrt tone.

Kinda Inez meets Newstead via Duff.

Use a BB5G a lot. Great basses.Use it more than the wick TBH. I picked mine up about 9-10 years ago for 350ish. Yamaha dont do bad gear at any price range. Really wish they'd return to that BB body. The new ones dont do it for me at all.
I know the Fenders well. You'll get a nice bass with that budget. Just to confuse you further I'd also consider the MIM Classic and Deluxe range too as they are seriously good players. I prefer them to the HWY1 (purely my tastes, others may not agree). And they will fall within your budget
Yep, the classic 60's jazz is superb. Same neck specs as as the aerodyne, SOOOOOO comfortable!

Just to cover all angles i'm going with 'My Girl' and 'Ride of the Valkyries'

I've an old Jim Harley strat copy and its a good little guitar. The tuners and jack are the only downside, low quality stuff. Body neck and pups are all fine.
I'd forgotton about the spiders!!... Oh and regards weight..have any of you guys ever lifted a DBS system? My board could weigh as much as a small Polynesian island and it would still be light compared to the Marshall
All to often, thankfully only the 1x15 though. And TE gear is supposed to be heavy. The DBS heads are fantastic I have to say.
Put one cab on the floor aimed at the guitar player. What he can't hear are your directional mids, and with your extension placed below his it's not doing much good there anyway, most pass him by at the knees. Put the other cab atop the first, aimed at you.
sounds like a plan, i'll give it a go on thursday night.
Well I finallly got busy in the workshop this weekend. Inspired by a lot of boards out there, I have been wanting a board for ages and having giged live with these all in a row, taking up half the stage, I thought I had better get on with it. It needs final wiring and the patch cables making..but it's a start..oh and there are a few more pedals to go on as well. My biggest problem was trying to find a standard size that would take the Pod as well as the other pedals. The 2/3 tier thing works reall well for me especially as the most used pedals are right under my RT foot. I can't get on with a totally flat board and as you can see I have an overhang to cover the controls on the POD as they are easilly moved and, as anyone who has one of these knows, a small amount of travel on these caught by your foot, changes the sound completely. All the power is housed under the top tier with access through the end for the mains cable. The lid is held down with 6 screw and caps as I don't expect to be accessing it often..probably just to run cables for new pedals. This wasn't difficult to make..I used quality 1/2" plywood for all the upstands and 1/2" MDF for all the flat bits..why?? Simples...I am a joiner and it's what I had lying around! Also the MDF is slightly lighter and as long as you are screwing through it into Plywood you have nothing to worry about...just don't screw into the end of MDF.. So far it has cost me £10 for the acoustic carpet and S/Adhesive velcro from my local ICE shop and about 4 hours work..I do have a workshop so that does make it slightly easier...See what you think.... Pictures of pedals being sited and me starting the carpetting Finished Carpeted board. The Black back upstand is going to be removable and is going to have Hypermused logo on one side and The Zen Pigs (Rock metal band I play in) on the Other... With a few of the final pedals on it Hope you like...
Very nice work. Where the hell did you find the animato?
The usual people who bring the backline to our jam night were away on tour last night, so we struggled to find a suitable bass rig as mine is still in the shop. As a last resort we ended up using a PA amp and speakers instead. Worked just fine on stage and also had a line out to the house PA. Cheers, Mick.
jaysus thts a complete replica of my first set up. even the neon pink lead.

To a point BRX. There still needs to be specialist venues in many cases. I mean, a sepultura tribute band for instance may be as good as the real thing and have a following but how many clubs/pubs will give them a slot? You're absolutely right about being professional and putting on a show etc but again its a case of where and when its possible. Assuming people are not putting the work in because there is not may shows coming up is a bit off. Many have been around the block and built a reputation only to suffer the same result.
Spreading cabs is a very bad idea. This explains why; it specifically addresses PA sub placement, but the same rules apply to electric bass. http://www.prosoundweb.com/article/in_sear...he_power_alley/ As for what you need, the job of backline is to handle the stage. I wouldn't dream of playing to more than 300 seats without full PA.
Its just for monitoring for the guitarist as some of the stages can be very wide. Maybe 18-20 feet between stacks. I only run a 150 watt head so theres not much chance of bleed into the FOH feed. Loads of power IMO. Even in medium sized clubs the PA does all my grunt work. I'm not into the whole 1k bass head thing. Just dont get it?

I think that people are less inclined to go to a music venue nowadays. The superpub is slowly taking over. Maybe 3-4 floors with a bar on each and a dj/jukebox for different tastes on each floor too. Hard to compete with something like that. The average punter is definately not going to pay X ammount into a venue if they haven't heard the band(s) before.
-
For £150 you should be able to pick up a secondhand OLP or Squire VMJ. Its coming up to christmas so expect lots of bargins to start popping up.
-
I'm VERY confused now.... So what would people suggest as a powerful rig? Say for a venue that holds 800-1000. I'd normally bring two 4x10's. One for each side of the stage, a guitar cab would usually be stacked on top of the bass cab. I'm liking the idea of 2x12's lately.
-
some of the newer stock ship with the strap button on the back of the neck heel. just like a sg. it helps with the neck dive a lot.
-
Played the 4 string and it was VERY nice. Comfortable, fast neck, solid construction and great hardware. Cant comment on the 5 but I assume its up to the same standard. Tension is not going to be a problem thats for sure and I reckon the pups will have enough grunt to kick out a tight low B.
There have been jack all gigs coming my way in comparison to last year, probably 30% of what I should've had. All the local venues are taking DJ's and discos because they 1/4 of the price of a half decent band. Had to sell equipment to make up for it.. also had to branch out to other parts of the industry (recording and producing) to make an income.
Seems to be very common lately In the last month 4 bands I know have packed it in. 2 original and 2 covers. Its affecting everyone at the mo. Any plans to play over here in the new year Pete? I missed Stevie the last time he was over with JK at the start of the month.

Not as many gigs but somehow theres more in the kitty. Last two gigs with the original band coming up this month then its a few months off to write tunes/get drunk. Covers wise, who knows. Depends on what takes my fancy. Overall its been a good year.
