With dots, everyone is literally reading from the same sheet. you only have to learn to read music once, and then you can take that skill from band to band.
I think that fairly well nails the pros. Sight reading is however extermely hard to pull off 100%, so therefore I wouldnt recommend it ahead of regular practice. End of the day its a personal choice. Does the ability make someone a "better" musician? Absolutely not. Practice is the only way to improve. I'd still suggest that the OP learns to read though.

I'd say learn how to read music. Sight reading is one of the finest tools you'll have as a musician. Theres nothing wrong with tab, in fact I use that more often than sheet music but theres always a chance you might be in a situation where you'll need the ability. As for practicing or not using aspect its easy to walk into any ol music store and purchace a score for £1. Tab books are usually £10 - £20. I'm of the view that musicians (including guitarists ) should always be looking to improve somehow. You may never need slap or tapping but it doesn't mean you shouldn't learn and practice the techniques.
yeh i think its a few effects thrown together. he misses the first bend! not sloppy imho! but please this is about his pedal setup/sound not his playing as if this is like talkbass i know where that leads! andy
merely an observation lad, the overall performance is off IMO. anyhu back OT theres god knows how many pedals linked in those drawers. i managed something similar to the intro sound today with a digitech synth wah and a boss power driver Digi: Sens @ 1. Control @ 3-4. Range @ 7-9. Boss: Level @ unity. Fat @ max. Muscle @ min. Drive @ about 75%.

The intro sounds kinda synthy to me. The first "solo" could be nailed with an ibby phat head. Second solo sounds filtered. How many years later and he still cant pull this off. Sloppy

Basically no. Most of the stores are middlemen and add serious €€€ to the rrp. I find its best to order from the UK/Europe.

Cracking session yesterday. 20+ bands, all on top form. Pics to follow Pics as promised. Still shattered after this one.

getting this a lot on my picking hand. staying away from pantene and doin the dishes helps. the best solution is to dig in for a few minutes each day to build the dead skin back up.

The Bolt on/ Neck through debate is a tough one. Generally Neck Through will give better sustain and resonnance.Theres also easier access to the higher frets with NT construction. (IME) Again its a matter of what sound best to your own ear. Personally I dont have a problem with either.
That must be seriously robust - I'd have thought it would get damaged when you break.
Theres usually a protective line of beer bottles waiting to go the the recycling centre so its safe enough. Actually, that reminds me........back in a mo.

http://www.thomann.de/gb/swissonic_mdr2.htm We record every practice session on one of these, its usually just left down on the pooltable. No strtegic placement or any of that. They're fantastic and dirt cheap.

The head is 700 watts @ 2 ohms. You'd need 4 of those cabs to get the full whack.

Awww Ragin! Just realised I passed up the chance of telling a guitarist what to do.............

Get yourself to a store and try out as many basses as you can. Go with what feels and sounds best to you.
I know there's a similar thread about amp sharing, but this is a slightly different situation. Basically my band are playing in Manchester tonight (Copper Face Jacks if anyone is interested? - shameless plug) and its an unsigned "festival" night so there 7 bands on. Usually the headline provides drum shell and bass amp, but the two bands after us both cannot provide bass amps for different reasons (one had their amp break yesterday, one is a foreign band who have no bass amp with them), so I've been asked to provide one. I've spoke to the promoter and apparently he won't claim liability for damage caused by any other bands (or the venue staff) Then tell him to piss off and get an amp somewhere else What I will do though is give the soundguy some strict rules (obvious ones like no drinks on amp etc) to relay to the other bassists in hope that they will treat it like their own.
That never makes much difference IME. Techs are usually too busy to be bothered unless you throw them a score and other bands will usually be too pumped to take care of it. If you dont want anyone using the amp you should have said no at the start. It seems to me that bassists feel they have to provide an amp when asked by a promoter or venue owner. Probably for fear of losing the slot. In truth its bollox, just say no. Simples. The promoters should be professional enough to realise that some people dont to risk their gear. Its a weird progression, Pub gigs= own rig. Club gig= share rig. Well organised venues will have a house backline. Major venues = back to you're own rig.

Anyone tried one of these on bass? The blurp on the webpage states that its suitable. Opinions?

I'd second the Ibby SR's and the Hohner/berg option. Does it have to be a 5er? Maybe downtune a 4 to cut the weight even more.

Love that guy. What a tone!
I picked up my first fretless - a Vintage v940fl a while back from these very forums. Having stripped it right down and started again, I'm very pleased with the setup and the feel - the neck is great. This thing has helped me to rediscover bass playing all over again! The only issue is the sound. It uses Wilkinson PJ pups and active electronics, and there have obviously been corners cut - it's only a budget instrument. It sounds lovely unplugged... What sort of sound am I looking for? To be honest, this is probably my sticking point. I want a nice Jaco mwaaah, but I also love the aggressive sound of my Spector Rebop (emg passive HZs with tone pump). Is this a complete contradiction? Right now, the fretless sounds limp and pathetic next to the Spector. Anyway, I've been looking at the EMG PJ set (active), the PJX set(super active), or maybe even the PJHZ set (passive a la the Rebop). I'd also like to replace the electronics, so thinking about the EMG BTS System (active - master, balance, treble and bass). Would I notice a big difference in sound between the active and passive pups? Is there a general charactaristic that sets them apart? I realize deciding on such things is very subjective, but any advice or suggestions (for an obviously confused soul) would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
I wouldnt put EMG's in a fretless myself. I imagine it would sound very thin. If you want a the Rebop type tone the go with the PJHZ and cut the P pup a little.
