Nathan East one of the best...i loved his playing with Anita Baker..it was just (at the time, and now) the best ive ever heard....a totally amazing soul(at the time) bassist...he has so much...did you read the interview in BG??
Sorry lad, I logged out after I posted that reply last night. Anyways, no I didn't see the BG interview, was it the latest issue? I stopped buying bass mags about 6-7 years ago. I pick up an odd issue of guitarist or guitar techniques maybe twice a year and thats it. I reckon if theres something I need to know or find out its better to come to places like this or just be bold and ask another bassist I see playing well. Back on topic, great thread Doddy. I think its a lot to do with personality too. I sure Geddy and Les etc could do fine as session bassists but they are in two of the biggest bands in the rock world. Part of that scene is the touring and the recognition they recieve etc which I'm sure also leads to a high level of satisfaction. The great session bassists are more than happy to take a back seat and just play for the sake of playing great music. Theres a lot to be said for an ability to cover the many styles of music out there but very few bassists can nail one "style". Think Stu Hamm in Sepultura or Cliff Burton with Nelly Furtado (pre electro pop rubbish). To excel in one genrei s a feat in itself. Thats why, IMO, 99% of session bassists are merely going through the motions in most cases. What sets the greats apart is the ability to get into a song, put their own twist on it and keep it relevent to that genre.

It depends on what you will be earning over a tax year. I know 90% of pub bands earn between €3,500 to €15,000 in a year but not many of them declare it. Two covers bands I know well have had to break up recently because the IR put the finger on them for unpaid taxes. One of these bands was averaging nearly 50k a year. Thats 10k per member. Not enough to be in the tax net over here but they didnt declare earnings as individuals so the band itself was done. IMO declare everything, its not that much work. It may take an hour at most. That way if serious money does start coming in its easy to update the info and claim tax relief, artists relief, loss of income benifit etc etc.

A 150 watt amp will do most pub gigs. I usually, when asked by bassists starting out, recommend 2x10 150 watt combos. The problem is that even for pub gigs, guitarists insist on using 4x12 cabs. Thats a lot of air moving compared to a 1x15 bass combo. We insist that every band runs through our 2x12 guitar cabs when we are doing gigs in the local. The bass amp is either what the band want to use or my 150 watt TE and Ampeg 4x10 if its a band with 2 guitars or the same head with a GK 2x10 for bands with one guitar. Going from 150 to 300 watts wont give you much of a volume increase so i prefer to even it out in terms of how much air is being pushed. That way the only thing that needs to be mic'd is the kick. I dont buy into this idea of 1000+watt bass heads. Theres FOH to get your bass to the right volume in larger venues and monitors if you need to hear yourself. Max of 450-500 watts is all you need IMO.

I've done the money thing so for now I'm just playing what I want. Having experience of other styles of music certainly helps the writing process though. Love Nathan East BTW. Probably my biggest influence for the last few years.

A good DI should have no problem. Get the best you can afford. MXR or Tech 21 are probably the best around at the mo IMO. For a bare bones DI you wont go far wrong with Radial.

Depending on where you shop there only about £170 in the difference between VM, CV and MIM

Can you read Tab or sheet music?

Here we go peeps. Due in the 18 of Aug. I reckon this is gonna be the fastest selling bass this year. I want that one. Thats the details from Thomann Ireland. I'm sure G4M and GaK etc will be cheaper. Duncan design pups look nice and beefy. Soooooo picking this up. I'll probably change the scratchplate to mirror or diamond plate. So excited!! :brow:

Waaaaay overpriced. Our guitarist uses a 20ft and it set him back a fair whack. No better than planet waves cables IME.

Always want to pick one up, even more so since the T-bird pro came out but short bassists and T-birds dont go well together. If I let one hang unsupported the headstock would hit the floor. Personally I find the neck too thick and the tone too middy.

Post your pictures, Lets see what you all look like.

Just found this mid solo classic shot Serious BassFace -
You may have seen this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PMfDfVLpODw...feature=channel The tone at 5.44 should seal the deal

Did you try the Aerodyne. Not exactly what you are looking for I suppose but its the only Fender I know of with the same neck specs as the Roadworn jazz. Great bass for longer gigs. I've heard they do a sunburst model but I've yet to see one.

Check out Circle K strings: http://circlekstrings.com/store/index.html Its possible with standard sets but it sound like muck. If its just for bedroom jamming then you'd get away with it.

Is a bass more aesthetically pleasing than a guitar?
Mog replied to Marvin's topic in General Discussion
If you approach it from a non standard body shape point of view then basses are usually better looking. Most of the basses from Chris Larkin and the like are works of art IMO. Its rare to find a guitar body shape that is unusual and pleasing at the same time. Strats v P's etc is just a matter of scale. -
Every 4th or 5th gig. Tis not easy on the pocket.

Another great and totally under rated bassist. Sad loss.

Ah take it, its Warwick. This time next year you'll have a signature bass.
Thats what it feels like to us. Another reason i am a tad more resentful is that this guitarist and me were in a band about 8 years ago and she became impossible to work with. it ended badly. Posthumously, the band was offered a fairly good record deal and I do still blame her for it ending before its time in the sun, but its all internalised, festering away as a harmless rage-based mental condition. so no harm there
I wouldn't be planning a tour with someone if I had previous problems with them. I say get another singer in. If he/she can play guitar too all the better. They were ready to ditch the band and came back to ye lower than a snake in a coal mine when their holiday fell through. No amount of civil conversation is going to change the fact that you will always be wondering if they are going to bail again. Nip it in the bud.

+1 on what Doddy said. If a company wants you to market their gear, you're efforts should be noted by that brand. There has to be other benefits other than gear at cost. If you are really happy with GK stick with them. Have you contacted Gallien about a deal? Could be worth a try. At the end of the day the worst they can say is no. No harm in trying.

Plastic Tesco bags for the cheap cables. The heavy duty stuff goes into a flight case. You'd be surprised how many 20+ ft speaker cables go missing each year????? Gnomes??????

It was stolen and you got it back??? Please tell me you did a wee jig on that guy. (or girl)
my 6th form common room is full of these small tables, i think they cost either £8 or £4, perfect 19" rack size. would work well for a studio setup. i think this is them, http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/catalog/products/40104270 [/threadjack]
Oh man, I getting one of those for the practice room.

Stuck on a set of Trujillo signature Dunlops last Thursday.( 45,63,80,102,130 ) Snapped the core of the G whilst tuning up, somewhere around E. The E,A and D string taper to 45 but the B is 130 throughout. Its also nickle plated unlike the other four. Tension is nice, sound is good after breaking them in. This mornings practice was the second outing they've had and I reckon they are just about ready for the gig on friday. Not as stable as Labella steps tuning wise but a solid performer.
