1.
Bigoted? Me? Too damned right! Basically, with all instruments, there's a correct way to play them and a myriad of totally wrong ways. Unfortunately, the popularisation of our chosen chariot has led to a lot of sloppy players. I shall eradicate them all - MWHAHAHAHA!
What is the definition of correct playing? Is it something got to do with technique, ability, how basslines are structured in a song.......? Just curious, this "correct way to play thing" always gets me muddled. As someone who started out on guitar I can honestly say that to play both instruments to a high standard is far from easy. Fret w***ing may be annoying but it is something that takes a lot of practice to do well. Any musician who puts a lot of time and effort into his or her chosen instrument and becomes proficient should be commended IMO. Its kinda like asking the fat kid who plays prop why he doesn't play centre. Misconceptions can sometimes stick and become accepted over time.
2. The lag issue isn't as bad as the old 506 II but its still there. Its really noticable if you switch between a synth and clean sound.
3. I agree with OTPJ, some sigs are damn fine basses. Others are totally pointless. Fender and Warwick really take the piss WRT sig models. The Urge is a fine bass but most of the others are just modded stock basses. IMO, go get a custom built by Chris Larkin and have everyone wanting your sig.
4. Oh the many times I've seen this..... The only dangerous guitards are the ones with a classical backround. Those guys can bring on the shame.
5. Very true Silddx. it is uncommon. Happened us twice. There was no monitors for the drummer in both cases. Easily sorted. Bottom bass cab was turned towards him and the guitard ran an extra 2x12 and placed it facing the kit also. I'm thinking about going sans backline in the Academy (Dublin) next week. Should be good for a laugh!! If Geddy can do it!!
6. Just gonna jump back in quickly. For studio use high end digital gear will work fine IF the studio is up to standard and the production and mastering are top notch.I know a guy who uses a Digitech 2120 Artist for his recordings and it sounds great. Better than his 5150 combo and an Sm58 IMO. For live work, with a little tweaking, something like a Pod X3 is more than suitable as the punters and most of the musicians wont know the difference. The problem is on larger stages if there is a lack of monitors. Its all about what you are willing to spend at the end of the day. Modelling: At one end you have boss or zoom, at the the other Eventide. Amps: Low end you have say Behringer, at the high end something like an Eden or Glockenklang.
7.
thanks for the info guys, but that isnt what i asked, i asked what wattage of speakers i need for a 450 watt amp head
Any cab rated at 450 watts and above will be suitable. If the cabs are rated 8ohms then you can run two of them. If you want full power from one cab then it has to be rated at 4ohms. Connect through the speakon jack for the best signal when using one 4 ohm cab.
8. That is really hard to call. Great bass tone, bad production. Really cant say after 3 listens. So which is it?
9. Both are very good at what they do. For more fx go with the zoom. Neither would be suitable as a dedicated fx board as patch switching is limited and both suffer switching lag.
10. For £60 you are not gonna get a hell of a lot. A used PA speaker maybe. 500 watts 1x15 at 4ohms sounds about right.
11. Gone the opposite way I'm afraid, picked up the 'wick to jam along with some RHCP a while ago and put it down after half a song. Up until very lately it has always felt just about perfect but for the last couple of gigs I've used the Yamaha, and while it doesnt fit in the overall sound of the band as well as the 'wick, it feels better in the hand. Seriously gassing for a new bass, pruchased a few lately but shifted them all soon after. Totally out of ideas. The head says a P bass or a Jap P special. Was also thinking Fernandes and Schecter.
12.
We've been locked away in rehearsals since March which is killing me but we start the follow up to the last album at the end of the month and from July we have gigs in Sheffield, Manchester, Bristol, London, Newport, Dublin etc etc For 2011 we are looking at a tv show in Manchester & a US showcase
Give me a shout before the Dublin gig, i'll try and get a few heads to tag along with me. The band I'm in have been on a promo push lately so its radio work etc. Getting some regular airplay in the states at the the mo so fingers crossed. The debut album is getting great reviews from about 90% of the critics we've sent it to, which is nice for a change. European tour for next summers festival season is gathering momentum. Some nice venues booked already. Biggest gig so far this year is with Diamond Head in Cork. Theres a few others that we may be in for also but its 50/50 at the the mo.
13. Nice! Haven't heard these guys before. Pity the crowd we're a bit dead. Nothing worse than putting that much energy into a show on a small stage with no crowd interaction. Right, I'm off to itunes.
14. I was one of those guys who wouldn't use digi but not anymore. (Cheers Silddx ). There is a huge difference between good digi gear like the Pod and say something from boss. Not a fan of the Line 6 amps though. That Tool sound they try to replicate is a bloody joke.
15. Cracking stuff lad. Well done.
16. Give these guys a try. Waiting on a delivery myself so I cant give an informed opinion, but I've heard good things. http://circlekstrings.com/store/
17.
No I haven't.
sh*t then , you guys must be a laugh to play with. You do have fun when ye play right?? Or are ye in too much of a rush to get back on the road home so ye can snigger at the unprofessional idiots who ripped a drum head. Nice.
18. Theres a 7 minute allocation for change over at most of the festivals we play. Downside is your first song is your soundcheck. Set of 30 minutes. If theres more than one stage and you sound crap during that first track no-one is gonna stay around to hear more. If the band is trying to shift merch then that is not good. By having less change overs the sound quality can be improved. Even if its only a 3 band bill, having everyband bring their gear is a nightmare. Especially if the bands are playing different styles. Mic up 3 kits, get sound. 3 different bass rigs with 3 different sounds to sort out FOH. Multiple guitar amps etc. Where is the extra gear held between sets? On stage or to the side. @ Doddy How is breaking a skin not playing properly?? Have you never seen a stick shatter after a couple of rim shots and rip through a head during a roll which followed? If anything this thread shows how badly organised a scene you guys have over there. Since when do bands, especially groups who haven't previously played the same bill together, not get in touch with each other before gigs. Even if a couple of hours beforehand. Between Facebook, Myspace and skype it doesn't take much.
19. At the moment its Nathan East. Not a stand out bassist by any means but well up there with the best of em. Got a couple of old tapes and dug out the VHS a while back and his approach to playing, song writing and just about everything else music related had a major impact. Mike Inez is another inspiration. That guy grooves better than anyone else in metal IMO.
20.
What I would object to is promoters using me to suplly the backline to other random bands. I like the story about pouring pints
I totally agree with that, but I've never experienced it. 99% of the promoters I've come across in the last 3 years have never asked us to supply backline. I've also never had a support band turn up at a gig without having asked what they need to bring along a few days before. The multi fx thing was probably a bit OTT on my behalf. Calm to crazy in 0.4 seconds. Think he got the better deal though, I replaced it with a ME 50B. @ Chris_b These are all reasons why these guys should not be gigging in the first place! The promoter should be professional enough to hire in a backline, not expect someone who owns the right equipment to do his job for him! Thats just plain wrong. Everyone has to start somewhere. Promoters/club owners rarely provide backline. A professional rig is just way too expensive for the majority of establishments. As I said, I've never had anyone book us for a gig without telling us who we would be sharing the bill with and what gear they had and if they had asked if a kit/amp was provided. IME most venues try to find out who's using what so the sound tech can organise changeover etc. The bands (including my own who are situated an hour away) that play in our local club have offered to play free gigs for 6 months to raise funds for a house backline but as the extra cost of insurance for the gear would increase the overheads too much the owner declined. I played with a drummer on Saturday who lent his kit out to an acquaintance and got it back with 2 damaged skins! Seriously. Skins get damaged the second you start playing them. Regardless of who's playing. Our drummer always says "go to town on em, skins are easy to replace" to whoever is using his kit. €20 is not going to break the bank if you need to replace 2 tom heads. I can understand why people are sensitive about their gear but a little understanding goes a long way.
21. Well.......ok, the other bands may be new and might not have gig standard gear. They may have to travel a distance without the room for gear.....there's many reasons why they wouldn't have an amp. If they're kids they aint gonna have the cash to spend on a rig. Why do you think Peavey combos and the like are so popular. I started out in a pubrock band using a Torque 100 watt combo. Not good. Any time someone offered they're rig I jumped at the chance. As long as people take the time to understand how my head works and run it without overloading I always lend mine at gigs. If they just nod and smile as I explain things without taking anything on board, then proceed to push my gear during soundcheck, I get the sound tech to run them 100% DI and switch off my gear. My only no no is booze on my rig. That will get you in serious trouble. The last guy who did it got a discreet word at the side of the stage, after he flipped the finger, I tipped my pint on his ME 50. He got the point after that.
22. If the volume and input gain are not at 0 when you power up/down it can lead to popping. If thats not the cause it could be anything from dirty power outlets to an inbuilt delay in the head which ensures the juice is evenly distributed throughout the unit. I had an old Ampeg solid state head that did this.

When I say service I mean a trip to the tech for electronic work etc. This particular bass is on its 3rd set of pups. Di Marzios. Me and soldering irons dont see eye to eye anymore. Naturally when I change strings etc, which is quiet often (a full gigging week could mean avg. 10 shows, string change after 4), everything gets waxed/polished/buffed/cleaned. Strings are wiped down after a gig with surgical swabs to remove as much gunge as possible and the body/hardware get a quick wipe down with a home brew of cleaner.

A winner! Cheers purplebob. Raised the bridge pup a bit and its much better. Yea the pots were scratchy so they went. But for the few pennies they cost I dont mind changing them every few years.
25.
This is where I'm getting confused. It says "150 watts RMS" "300 watts peak" Speaker output 4 Ohms. What does this all mean? Yes, it's loud enough, it will cover nearly all the gigs we do in local pubs, but it wouldn't be loud enough for some of the beer festivals we're doing this year, most of which are in huge marquees with no wall or corner to place my amp in. I can line out, of course, but our PA has no bass bins so it would probably sound better if I didn't. It's an SM combo, yes. The front says GP7 SM 150. At the moment I'm avoiding using the EQ too much, it has the Trace 'shape' button on the front, shape 1 and 2. Apparently shape 1 is the classic trace sound, but it's been a bit muddy so I've been using shape 2 with just a touch of low mid boost.
I have the head unit. This model always throws up confussion. From what I can tell, with two 8 ohm speakers connected, it still only kicks out 150 watts. Min load of 4ohms probably gives 150 watts. Single 8 ohm cab probably gives 80-100 watts. I've been told that its 150 watts per speaker output. What the yanks refer to as a bi-board system.I e-mailed TE about it but I may as well have been asking our drummer. I've attached a bad phone shot of the back panel of mine. The manual is impossible to find for this range. I'd suggest getting a good 8ohm 4x10 to run with the internal 1x15 and DI to the desk. The shape 2 button is suggested for rock tones. Personally I dont use it but our guitard loves the sound it kicks in.
