  1. I was interested first by a set of Aquila Reds I told my wife to listen to some reviews. She said she preferred tapewound strings. "But what about bowing ?" I asked, she answered that whenever I play with the bow she wants to break it on my head. I forget to say I ordered the cheapest ones : Pyramid Black Tape. Maybe they can be bowed, who knows ? Life is full of surprise. I don't care about bow, I don't care about bow, I don't care about bow... I will try !

  3. Hi ! I'm again here, in the attic, that's not a joke, in Autumn the bass can live there, not in Summer but I'm not sure. On the first one I'm using the 3rd finger, it can be done but I'm afraid to lose my hand. I play with my best friend, a kind of stable friendship which I like. When I don't play the wrong note, my left pinky can be stuck under the G string, fortunately it doesn't cut so well... Have a nice week !
  4. Hi ! I hope everyone is fine. I would like to know if you have ever played nylon strings. I don't mean gut-a-like but nylon with steel core.
  5. Talking about things you can't achieve is easier than talking about things you can achieve, let them talk.
  6. Sorry I'm used to talkbass "hostility", add to this my false bad mood when I am talking, it becomes a kind of war. It gave me a bad opinion about double bassists but here you're cool even if a lot here drive on the left.
  7. Another nightmare !!!
  8. This is your nightmare !!!
  9. The right hand is often wrong but it sounds good to my ears but it's wrong, not right but it's actually my right hand, not my left.
  10. Today I played a bit, I don't practise so much anymore even if when I picked it "everything" (for me) even if it's nothing (for you) came naturally.
  11. That was my point, if you are used to playing the bass guitar with Simandl fingering, it's not a "big deal", you get quickly functional without becoming a great double bass player. In a jazz ensemble, nobody wants you to be great but functional. You can be great and unable to accompany other musicians. Some big technicians can be lost in a tune while simple players do the job and more.
  12. Cool ! It reminds me another forum !
  13. Put several delay pedals and rush, flanger and chorus at the end of the chain. Then shout "Stop !", you will be all the double bass players and the conductor at the same time.
  14. I think you understood what I meant. And so there is a very big difference between playing classical guitar and jazz guitar even if my basic knowledge on guitar comes from classical, it took me a while to play jazz on the guitar (only after having played "jazz" on bass guitar, not good at all) because I was a kind of "conservative" guy, one finger per fret, etc.. Now I mostly play a cheap 7 string solid body guitar and use hybrid picking, sure like everyone I had played blues and rock. I forgot to say I've been playing the saxophone for quite 35 years but I'm not so good. Maybe a lot of people will shout when they read that, on the double bass when I play pizzicato it's sharp and with the bow it's flat, and it's the same fingering ! On open strings, it doesn't change so much I guess, no difference. I maybe play too hard, there are so many people who say that the double bass requires more energy, I have already played the bass guitar with energy in order to emulate a double bass or kind of, maybe it's too much. And this is the worst !!! A nightmare !!! Solar !!! I'm lost !!! Laugh at me !!!
  15. Recording oneself and listening to the result help more than imagining it sounds good because your teacher and orchestra buddies said it sounded good. Sharing it entirely is another story... My mother has always said I was beautiful and clever, well... She's my mother.
  16. In an orchestra if everyone played perfectly in tune you wouldn't get the same impact. Add the traditional classical vibrato... Do you know how flanger and chorus effects work ?
  17. In ordinary life, double bassists are actually very cool ("Take the double bass, I show you the fingerings, it's just bigger, do it, you can !"), I don't doubt you are. But sometimes, maybe I don't clearly understand English, in the internet they seem to react like if they caught the "guitar diva syndrome". You know what I mean. I admit you are cool and you have humour, British mind ? I'm from a country where Scottish, Welsh, even people from Ulster and the Republic of Ireland are English. Do you guess where I'm from ?
  18. Hum, the community should teach him how to play the double bass, maybe he is not as experimented as I believed.
  19. I am scared of what you could think about Ron Carter... You will say it's Ron Carter and it was easy for him because he was already Ron Carter before he played the bass and that's why he recorded so many albums. I'm kidding but I understand now how a double bassist mind works. 😜 OK it's Ron Carter !
  20. This is the way I play now even if I don't practise the way I used to (I've got a job and I play other instruments). It has been made without thinking, for sure I should have thought before doing it. I think everyone knows the tune, it is not the easiest one even if everyone wants to learn and play it. You will hear all the problems I've got, I'm sorry, there is no fancy things there. I have to confess you are cool people.
