Jazz bass Jaco pastorius : Tribute or Artist signature
Emanew replied to Emanew's topic in Bass Guitars
Which these days bears little physical resemblance to the bass Jaco is famous for playing.
It has been indeed "redesigned" by Kevin Kaufman with the remaining "poor" pieces. But Jaco was satified, so let it be... I prefer its original sunburst worn up look. -
Jazz bass Jaco pastorius : Tribute or Artist signature
There are actually 4 Jaco basses. The three mentioned above and the "Bass of Doom"
Cool ! There are even 5 : - THE 62 JB fretless aka Bass of Doom. - His 60 JB fretted, famous for starring in "Portrait of Tracy" and Joni Mitchell period. For me, "Portrait of Tracy" and "Continuum" are among the most poetic compositions in Modern Jazz and even in Modern Music. There is only ONE JACO whatever the piece of wood he was playing. I am becoming too lyrical let's come back to instruments... -
I am going to be controversial here: you are never going to sound or play like Jaco, he was a one off player, unique... Sorry for the interruption, continue on.....
I totally agree with you. Pat Metheny tells it very well. I am no more a teenager.... unfortunatly I own a 1989 US Jazz Bass 62 Reissue FRETTED. I am looking for the same version in Fretless to have this so well designed neck. I don't find a US reissue 62 fretless so i was interested in getting informations about these Jaco basses. I also want a 60's PU position, alder or swap ash body, Kluxon tuners keys I like this famous Jaco minimalist look that's why i said : "why not trying a Jaco version ?" Thanks for answering fellow groovers ! I am going to look for MIJ Jazz Bass fretless too Let's keep on sharing. -
Jazz bass Jaco pastorius : Tribute or Artist signature
Emanew replied to Emanew's topic in Bass Guitars
Hi gareth, Thanks for sharing. Actually, there is a difference between Tribute and Artist. The Jazz bass Tribute is done by the custom shop. It has a relic look. So it is 1 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist signature. It has a "Jaco" on the neck plate. It has not a relic look. 2 - JB Jaco Pastorius Tribute made by the Custom Shop. It has a relic look 3 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist Series Custom Shop Tribute limited 100. It was in 1991 (the James Jamerson Precision Tribute was made at the same time). The basses this year had not a relic look. Both fretted and fretless were made in 100. there is a tribute text written on the neck plate and a 100 limited serial number. 1 1 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist signature. "Jaco" neck plate. not reliced. Thanks to Bassmasta for new better quality pictures 2 - JB Jaco Pastorius Tribute made by the Custom Shop. relic look 3 - JB Jaco Pastorius Artist Series Custom Shop Tribute limited 100 only in 1991. -
Hello fellow Groovers, I am looking for advices, feeling, point of views about these 2 basses. Beyond price difference i would to Know what is all about. Thanks for sharing.

Potentially really stupid truss rod question...
Emanew replied to Spike Vincent's topic in Bass Guitars
All this 24 hr quarter turn stuff is bull. Especially on a natural finished neck. A good neck should move instantly with maybe slight adjustment later on.
Tons of bassists cracked their necks by claiming this argument. What do this test prove ? Short and long mechanical requests are completly differents. Keep on being rude and don't change a thing. A luthier who saw hundred of broken necks and their conceited bassists must be wrong... -
@drTStingray I love Stingray fretless, congrats !
Odd thread this: "how do you get Jaco's tone" type one answer... it's all in the fingers, and rear pup
Totally agree with that. A rear single coil PU mainly in 60's position and hours of playing. Practicing to develop right hand sensibility (or left hand with lefty players) and dexterity. For example, Jaco shows so well how you have two completly different sounds if you touch strings near the bridge or close to the neck.
type two answer... actually his 66 jazz bass can be heard between the tracks 4 and 5 on the weather report album as he knocked it... it had oval tuners which added to the sound....
Funny answer 2 ! Thanks

Potentially really stupid truss rod question...
Emanew replied to Spike Vincent's topic in Bass Guitars
That's what I stick to.I fully understand the truss rod process,it's just that this one seemed to be working backwards.
Like you, if i have a doubt i ask for advices around me. I only wanted to share with BC fellows what i learnt . No aim to play the teacher Your question was a good opportunity to write here what the luthier told me. How is your lefty neck ? -
It appears Jaco was bought a Fender Jazz by his parents when he was a kid - on the Jaco tribute compilation album, amongst some interesting photos is a picture of him as a kid holding a brand new sunburst Fender Jazz complete with ashtrays. My guess is that this was his main bass from then onwards - becoming the heavily bashed and modified version of 15 to 20 years later.
First, i agree with you drTStingray about having this Jaco Pastorius Modern Bass DVD. As a suprising example, Jaco tells why he never praticed with a fretless. About this picture with teenager Jaco holding a brand new Jazz Bass : This JB is a 1966 instrument with pearloïd blocks, lilipop tuners and a specific sunburst (yellow very visible). It has a CBS era look. The two Jaco's most famous sunburst basses are : The Bass of Doom is a 1962 jazz Bass sunburst. Jaco made it a homemade lined fretless with clay dots. From Fender's site : " Nicknamed by Pastorius himself, the Bass of Doom was a stock 1962 Fender Jazz Bass, purchased at a pawnshop in the early 1970s. Pastorius originally removed the frets with a butter knife, filling the slots and missing chunks with “plastic wood” and covering the fingerboard with several coats of boat epoxy. This “customized” bass would be the only fretless instrument Pastorius would ever record with." His other sunburst is a 1960 fretted JB. He also removed pickguard and concentric Stackknobs ( replaced by a 3 knobs set giving more punch according to Jaco). The neck has also clay dots. This fretted Bass can be heard in "Portrait of Tracy", sublime harmonics. Both of these 2 basses can be seen in Joni Mitchell's Live "Shadows & Light" I hope it will help.

Interesting but it is too complex for me... It makes me think to Jules Verne, or closer to nowadays Caro & Jeunet's universe. I really like the home studio Welcome to the "enhanced" XIXth century...

Potentially really stupid truss rod question...
Emanew replied to Spike Vincent's topic in Bass Guitars
Better to ask than doing a wrong thing with the neck, main part of Bass IMO. No differences on lefty instruments. When you turn clockwise the trussrod screw you make your neck convex. You have to do that when your 20th to 24th frets are buzzing. When you turn counterclockwise you make your neck concave and it fixes a buzz on 1st to 4th frets.... VERY IMPORTANT : when you turn a trussrod DON'T screw more than 1/2 turn a day. Otherwise you may crack your neck. In other words, let time to wood to slowly follow. I learnt this from a famous luthier, i want to share it. Keep on grooving -
Out of RANGE... No better choice. I would try different options of pickguard to make it more and more special. There are some good webshops. Anyway it is already a fantastic project. Congratulations !

Good question and good answer. I love gold anodized. Thanks !

I agree with a Bass between 69 and 72. Tuners are pre 72 and post 69 ( chrome) It looks to have a long G string screw. A picture of the pots will informed us.
... At one point someone told me that all of them are 'broad necks'. Are there no exceptions to this ??.
Hi Torben ! You have right answers with all these groove fellows. Broadneck (20mm, 4 string spacing) on Stage I, that's the main difference with the serial (non Custom shop) Streamers : Stage II, LX... Optimal ergonomy for slapping. Need to practice a little bit more for fingerstyle if you have little hands

Interesting article, thanks. Fortunatly, Bass of Doom reappeared and the luthier did a great job with remaining pieces. On the other hand, among the most sought after BASSES i would add : - Donald "Duck" Dunn Precision bass. RIP Dear Mister Dunn. http://www.thfire.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/donald-dunn-dies.jpg -
