If you want to get it absolutely right you'd also buy the same bass, use the same strings and put it through the same amp into the same speakers as on the original record (which may have been recorded using a different set up to what they used live - or even recorded by a session player). And ask everyone else in the band to do the same. So long as you have a singer who can sing exactly like the original, then you'll get close. But, you'd only be doing it for yourself. Most of the audience won't be paying that much attention.

I've covered over 100,000 miles in my Berlingo and it's holding up pretty well.

Unless you're in a tribute band (i.e. people come to see you because they can't see the original band), what's the point of replicating a record note for note? After all, it's rare that big name bands play their songs live exactly like they do on the record. I remember Dave Gilmour saying that you can easily tell if he's not enjoying a gig because he plays his solos just like on the record. Hell,i I've got a live version of Sunshine of Your Love where Jack Bruce varies the bassline during the chorus of what must be one of the most famous bass riff songs. Whatever I play, I always play the bassline properly. However, it's my own interpretation of the original. I strive to keep the signature bits in, but they go off from there. Once I've created my own bassline, I try to play it properly. My band has developed its own versions of Genie in a Bottle and Toxic. Everyone recognises them when we play them, but we're a rock band and they're far from being close to the way Britney or Christine's band did them. I was once listening to a band playing Paranoid and noticed the bassist stuck to root notes throughout, not playing a single one of the runs. I asked a few of the people I was with what they thought of the song and they all thought the band played it well. Most people mix what they're hearing with the version that's being replayed on their own heads, I think.

Band practice last night without our singer. I printed off all the lyrics so the two guitarists could sing and I could have a go at some backing vocals. Observations - I can't hold a note in a bucket and when I do try to add even the odd word I forget where I am in the bassline. I don't think my future lies in that direction. On the other hand, there were two girls in the control room of the recording studio we use for rehearsals. They indicated they loved our version of "Genie in a Bottle" (we easily broke through the soundproofing!) and one girl joined us for a few songs. Poor lass ended up with a rather hoarse voice, but wants to try again next week. We haven't told our singer he may have a rival/backing vocalist next week. We finished with our rendition of "Living on a Prayer". The girls dimmed the lights in the control room and waved their cigarette lighter. Told us it was a great way to end the evening, which was nice.

Any update, please? I am no longer getting notifications for most of the threads I'm subscribed to. The majority seem to be those threads that have been going for ages and have dozens of pages, but not all.

You could do worse than a Berlingo. I used to have to pack the PA, drums and my own bass rig in mine:

We change some and we scrap those that don't work even if we have changed key. The only problem I've had is when I was in two bands who both did the same song, but in a different key to one another. Gigs on successive nights were a headache!

Arguably, if it's wrong it shouldn't infringe copyright. It becomes someone else's interpretation of the original.

It takes time to settle on the bass that suits you, I think. I have done a lot of buying (one trade, but no selling yet!) over the past couple of years. I have spent a lot of time swapping between them all, but I keep coming back to my Warwick Corvette $$s. The only difference between them is the colour, so I usually take them both to gigs. So, yes, I may be selling some soon, but no, I won't be buying any (probably).

Yes, just found out that Weezer's TAB for Buddy Holly has vanished too, for a similar reason. Presumably they want us to buy their books instead of learning from a vey crude free version.

Nice headstock. Slim from the Hamsters used to have a Tele-stlye guitar with "Hamstercaster" on the headstock, which I always rather liked.

My first teacher taught me to float (if you mean on the pickup when on the E, on the E when playing the A, on the A when playing the D and so on) and I've stuck with it ever since. I've tried anchoring my thumb to the pickup and couldn't, nor could I work out a good reason why I'd want to.

Band practice. We're breaking in a new drummer. It's about his fourth rehearsal with us. Okay, he's learning 30+ songs we've been gigging for a couple of years, but progress is a bit slow. I'm not yet feeling a connection with him. And he repeated some mistakes he made last week that throw the lead guitarist and me out. The result was that songs we used to play well now sound like we're all just getting to grips with them. But the drummer is a mate of the two guitarists, so I just have to bite my tongue. Felt very flat on the way home.

I have just noticed a complete lack of notifications too. I checked a couple of threads I've been subscribed to for ages (post your pictures... and Precisions) only to find that I'm no longer following them. When I click on "follow topic" it gives me the usual options, but after I've ticked one they still don't appear in my list of topics I'm following in my "contents" section.

Don't worry about me now, I got it from my local library.
