1. Bought mine new when they first came out and don't intend selling it, if that's 50p-worth. The neck is pretty chunky, but the nut width is mid-way between a Jazz and a normal Precision, so the neck doesn't feel too deep. Mine doesn't feel heavy, but it does feel solid. Good pickups and that sold Badass II bridge to keep things anchored. Err, that's about it.
2. Welcome! Keep an eye open for the East Anglia Bass Bash. Coming your way soon, hopefully.
3. Technically, only Fender can make a bass and call it a Jazz. Everyone else has to call it something else, although they'll stil be referred to as a "jazz" bass. With that in mind, are we talking about what makes a bass part of the jazz family, or are we referring to basses properly called Jazz? Whichever. It is, it seems that the definition becomes more and more elastic as times passes.
4. Not noticed a hum.
5. Thanks for that. I'll give it a go.
6. Picked this up yesterday. As Clarky said, there's not a mark on and all the original tags etc are present and correct. When I get back from France I'll post some pictures in the Warwick porn thread. In. The meantime, I'm spending my time waxing it. Jeez, it's a heavyweight bit of kit, though! Thanks again, Clarky, for being a gent.
7.
Looking at the punters, and talking to them (I was in the crowd too, after all), it was pretty clear that they weren't actually listening to the band ... they were listening to the original song being replayed in their heads.
Couldn't agree more. Our approach is that if you want to play them exactly the same as on the record, join a tribute band. We do covers of songs by Britney Spears and Christine Aguilera as well as Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam and so on, but we play our own "interpretation" of them. I remember the advice "play covers like they're your own and play your own like they're covers", which I think we do (well, the first part anyway).
8. We played our first gig at the Brickmakers, in Norwich (well known local music pub). First time we've had access to a plumbed in PA and professional soundman, plus a massive stage. Hell, the drummer and I had one whole level to ourselves, with the guitars and singer on a lower step. The on-stage sound was excellent. The pub uses the Tuesday slot to try bands out before granting them better gig slots. We had several comments that we were the best band to play on a Tuesday for ages, that there were more people there than usual (friends and colleagues, presumably!) and others of the same ilk, which was nice. We've been offered three more gigs, which is even nicer! I played my Corvette $$ through my Orange Bass Terror (volume and gain on a quarter and it was the loudest thing I could hear on my bit of stage. And I even played a song I always muck up in practice completely cleanly the whole way through. A good night. Well pleased. Quote of the day from one of our guitarists "Why does everyone have to look at us when we're on stage". He'd prefer to play from behind a curtain!
9. I've just taken delivery of this (via Basschat): The wood is a little discoloured because I don't think it was waxed very much when it was new (it came with an almost unused can of wax), so I'm getting stuck in with some elbow grease. My two Corvettes together:
10. And your link to the Urban Surf Kings is...? (Interested, not a joke!) Just followed the link. Love the "bone rattling..."
11. Probably the same pots as my Jazz Deluxe. The bass and treble are on one stacked pot and the mid is on its own.
12. I experimented by taking the neck off the Mike Dirnt and putting the neck off one of my Jazzes on it. Turns out that the heel of the Mike Dirnt neck (if necks have heels...) is more curved than the Jazz neck, so it's a bit of a messy fit unfortunately, with gaps and overlaps.
13. Welcome to the forum - from Norwich. Keep an eye on the East Anglia Bass Bash thread. There are usually a few of us from Norwich who tag along. I'm sure there'll be a seat or two free in someone's car. You may even meet the legendary Dood of this parish.
14. Wired money for a bass to Zeebs on Sunday evening. The bass arrived 8.30am on Tuesday morning, so very impressed with the speedy service. The bass was in its soft case, wrapped with bubble wrap and foam and packed inside a proper, big cardboard box. Well protected and as professionally-done as if Zeebs works in a guitar shop. Oh, hang on, he does! To sum up, quick, hassle-free deal and very professionally followed-through. Many thanks.
15. Funnily enough, we do play a few Foos covers!
16. Is there a date yet, even if there's no venue, so I can block it out in my diary?
17. I can manage about three chords, but seem to have a few stashed away: An acoustic I fell in love with the looks of. Apparently it's nice to play too, according to the guitarist in my band (who has a limited edition PRS, a 1970s Strat, a Gibson Trini Lopez 335 and a Dan Armstrong Plexi, all of which he gigs with): A resonator because you've got to have something to play slide on, haven't you? (the stripes are from the conservatory roof!) And a Japanese-made Strat my girlfriend gave me: (It came with a white scratch plate, but I reckon it looks better with a black one.)
18. Do Boss do more than one bass-specific chorus? Mine isn't muddy at all.
19. Anywhere near Slough?
20. I've bought a couple of pedals recently and now I'm at a bit of a loss for the order to put them in. Any suggestions, please? TU-2 tuner - ODB-1 overdrive - CEB-3 chorus - SYB-3 synthesizer - OC-3 octave - FL-3 flanger - CryBaby bass wah Thanks muchly.
21. I know, no Corvettes for ages and then a fretless and this one (plus the limited edition one) all come up at the same time!
22. I think they're tuned the same as a guitar (E A D G B E) but an octave lower. From what I understand they tend to be used for rhythm guitar duties but to give a heavier sound. I've always quite fancied one, but have never held one or even seen one in the wood.
23. Just checked. There are two different sorts on my board. The branded ones are made by, guess... Boss! They;re not as low profile as the ones in the link above, but are slimmer than the Boss ones in the Dawsons link. Mine are more squared off. If you need a picture I can take one tomorrow.
24. Wish I was good enough to play fretless - this looks gorgeous!
25. My board uses some like that. Trouble is, it's outside in my car and it's wet and windy out there! I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find a brand name on them.
