The "thumbrest" on the wrong side was originally named the "tug-bar". When Leo Fender originally designed the electric bass as a more portable instrument for double bass players, he envisaged the player plucking with the thumb and anchoring the fingers on the tugbar underneath the strings. It was deleted some time later when most bass players played with their RH fingers and the rest reappeared on the opposite side and became a thumb rest. The SR300M is a great bass, btw
Thanks for the info and thanks for the good review
Great basses but would you say they are cheap? For me
I guess now is as good a time as any to ask a question which will make me seem incredibly stupid What's with the thumb rest type thing below the G string? As for me, I'm currently playing a very cheap beginner instrument... So i'd love something like an Ibanez SR300M or one of the yamaha RBX range
There's not much more pushing I can do. Ebay have said it's between me and the seller and are refusing to assist and the seller said she won't sell and will not respond to any more emails. I gave her a last warning and she didn't reply. Need to think up a short bit of nasty feedback that rules out her simply responding 'I made an error in the listing, apologised and refunded, case closed' which is what she keeps saying.
Is there any way you can get paypal involved?
Cheers for all the tips and replies folks. The pub where we rehearse, up-stairs in a big room, let us practice down-stairs where we'r gonna be saturday night. 15-20 locals cheering and clapping, all said we were sh*t-hot!! It was like a mini gig. Can't wait till tomorrow night, I'm buzzin now. I'll let ya all know how it went. Thanks, Hitchy.
Good luck with tomorrow have fun

I'm well aware that some players rest their right (left in the case of lefties) thumb on the pickup/thumbrest for every stringthat they play, and that some move their thumb to the string directly above when playing the A D and G strings. Which do you prefer? and is there any advantage to either style? The main reason for my question is that i recently discovered i can play both ways, and was hoping some of the more 'experienced' players could tell me that there is an extreme advantage either way, so that i could continue playing that way... But also thought it may be an interesting point for discussion...

I've just realised how truly awful laptop speakers are for hearing a bass guitar

Looks lovely, i quite like the colour of the shine 5 string!

As a recent beginner, i have moved into the territory of learning to improvise my own lines. this is, however, difficult to do without access to guitar and drum tracks of which i know which chords are being played on the guitar. Anybody know of any sources of tracks like this, which have the chords being played on display? or even an alternative solution? thanks in advance
They sound different. There are different techniques involved. For me it's a completely separate instrument!
I see. Now you mention it, a difference in sound makes sense

I've been racking my brains for a while, and i can't think of any advantages other than personal preference on the aesthetics, or the feel of the neck. are there any actual physical advantages? or is it just because of these preferences? opinions?

Hey all, I got this amp along with my first bass, it's a 'Benson' (takes no genius to work out it's nothing special.) It's a 10W little combo with volume, bass and treble control with a headphone jack. Measurements: 10" (25cm) height, by 9 3/4" (24cm) width, and 3 1/4" deep. One of the photos added shows it on top of a laney rb3 to show the size comparison. It's got a little stand on the back so it can be tilted backwards. The outer coating has a small tear (fingernail size) and a cornerpiece missing. It's perfect if you want something quiet, or something for a young budding bassist in the making . Any more info needed PM me, how about £15 collected from Alton, Hampshire. I could send it at some extra cost.

I've actually been active on here for quite a while but I just realised I never introduced myself! So hello, i'm 15 and i live in alton, hampshire. i've been playing bass for a few months now.

A must-read for everyone who gigs in small venues.
JordanRLS replied to MIJ-VI's topic in General Discussion
After watching that i think i'll be slightly paranoid when attending gigs in places like that, scary stuff.
