I think he's saying he likes Jason Newsted's tone and Queensryche's bass tone on that record.
Oh right. Yes, on re-reading I can see that now...

No, I don't take much notice of serial numbers I'm afraid - but the bass was certainly in immaculate condition. Like you say, there aren't many of these around - which is odd as they are extremely well made, great to play and very nice sounding. If five string basses were my thing (or I had more perserverance) I would still have it!

To the OP: How long have you had that bass and where did you get it? It looks very like the one that I owned for a while and sold to Pinball on here.... It had a few previous owners too - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/177749-sold-beautiful-carvin-xb-75p-5-string-bass/page__hl__carvin It's a gorgeous bass with a fantastic range of tones and it is very playable - top choice, and certainly the best five string I ever owned. Sadly, I just found that five strings was not for me... Of course, if this is a different bass - forget what I just said!
Mixing different speaker sizes is mostly manufacturer bullshit. It can be done provided that you use crossovers to feed each size of speaker/design of cab with it's own range of frequencies, but running two different cabs both at full range leads to inconsistencies in the sound from frequency and listener position
All true of course... but in "real world" situations (i.e. on a stage or in a rehearsal room with a range of other musicians), would we (or anyone else) really notice the difference? Actually, thinking about it, the OP's experience would suggest that we might... Hmmmm.
I tested the Supercompact. but my old Bergantino HT-112 ER is still superior in many respects, but this is just my opinion.
In which respects is it superior? Build and finish quality go without saying, but what else? I ask purely out of interest

Wizard '84 Jazz pickups - SOLD
Are Wizard pickups going to be back in business sometime?
So it would seem! There is another thread somewhere, but I can't find it... their new website should be live any time now. I think they have changed their name to "Hot-rod" or something similar... On FB - https://www.facebook.com/hotrodguitarparts -
Spector legend might be worth a look... A bit more than £200, but a lot of bass for the money.
-
All Spectors are well-made, great-sounding instruments. The Korean models are outstanding value and can be picked up on here for less than £400. They look, sound and feel a lot more expensive than that!
The tone I love is Jason Newstead, queensryche on I don't believe in love etc...
Isn't that Eddie Jackson? When did JN play with Queensryche? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eddie_Jackson_(musician)
TBH unless you are very lucky, you are unlikely IMO to get a 5-string bass with a decent sounding B-string for that price even second hand.
That's what I was just going to post. I've owned several fivers now - ranging from "bargain basement" to "mid-priced but serious". In every case I have sold it on because it wasn't as good to play and didn't sound as good as even a cheap four string bass. There still seems to be a real problem in building a good five string bass down to a modest budget. If he really needs a five (and can't get away with a four with heavy strings, down-tuned) then I would suggest he really needs to at least double his budget...

FS Musicman Sterling, B/B/M * Finally Sold!!!*
Conan replied to stingraybassman's topic in Basses For Sale
Always liked the look of a Sterling, ceramic pickup, lighter body and switching - somewhere between a Stingray and G&L.
They are lovely! They play great, feel great and sound great! The only reason I traded mine is that the sound just didn't work in my current band. I did think about changing bands, mind... -
Don't think a Streamliner will do the upper mid twangy thing too well.
That Fender bridge that looks very much like the Badass is probably a very adequate replacement though. Looks alright to me. I would buy a bass with one on.
Yes, I guess it could be argued that the GL and MM sig basses are modified J basses (neck for the Geddy, electronics for the Marcus) with after-market hi-mass bridges. Maybe it doesn't have to be a Badass after all... As I've said before, I remain unconvinced whether they add much to the sound of a bass anyway. I swapped the bridge on my Geddy for a standard MIM BBOT and there was no noticeable loss of sustain or tone... YMMV of course!
So I installed some barts on my MIM jazz. It sounds rubbish.
See - you should have gone for the EMGs after all....
You'll be impressed with the neo Jazz bridge pup - the low mids are sublime
Cool! I kind of had my heart set on EMG or Wizards as my replacement set, but I'm seriously inclined to give these a go...
Mudpup mentioned the Hartke LH500. At the other end of the scale, am I going to be able to get a 500W head quiet enough for practice at home or if I'm playing with a less strident bunch of people - for example with a drummer with an electronic kit?
The volume is a bit strange on the LH500, possibly made all the stranger by the lack of "gain" control. Between 0 and about 5 it has a nice, linear increase, giving plenty of control for low-volume work. Then, suddenly, between 5 and 6 the volume seems to increase exponentially! Not a problem for home use as you will be nowhere near 5 (even with an 8 ohm cab)... but be very careful if you are rehearsing at "proper" volume or playing a gig. A seemingly small tweak on the volume control can give a massive increase in output!!
So he'd put on a record and jump up the stairs, always arriving too late to hear the beginning.
Sounds like our drummer...
Is the SFX Thumpinator the way to go or will it change the sound too much?
It is supposed to remove the very low frequencies that we don't really hear anyway - so no, it shouldn't change the sound too much.
