Wizard '84 Jazz pickups - SOLD
Conan replied to dannybuoy's topic in Accessories & Other Musically Related Items For Sale
Hi, sorry but I can't give you a proper answer as I've only ever played one Jazz bass and it had these pickups in it! There was plenty enough treble response for me and they were very full in the lows and mids. Others might be able to give a more honest assessment.
Thanks -
At the price, you really should give them a go.
Yes, at this price point you don't normally expect all the bells and entwistles.... Seriously though - I've never even heard of these pickups before! At nine quid each for J pickups I might have to give 'em a try... Pickups that are cheaper than strings?!?!?! How did that happen?
I wouldn't like to guess - it depends on the amount of prep etc. Drop him a message on FB!
I don't (and won't!) use FB. I guessed it would be a movable feast, but was just wondering about a rough estimate. Are we talking under £100? Between £100 and £200? That sorta thing...
I have a pair and I love them. Certainly are fat!
"Fat" how, exactly? Rich and full in the midrange? Lots of bottom-end? Sound is so hard to describe in words... I like plenty of treble response, so if these lack top end they may not be ideal for me... -
Norwood... touts quite a spectacular cock.
How long have you been waiting to tell that particular story?!?
Every so often he does seem to drop off the radar, I'd imagine to crack on and sort out orders/builds etc. but he always surfaces shortly after.
This ^
The Geddy bridge is actually engraved with his signature which is quite cool:
Hmmm... although the two things that make the GL sig bass are the neck (obviously) and the Badass II. That's what Geddy fitted to his own '72 Jazz, so surely that's what should be on the sig model? Fair enough if they are discontinued, but then surely so should the bass. It is no longer a true signature model. Although that does beg the question of what actually constitutes a sig model... For the record, I am another one who is not sold on the supposed "advantages" of high-mass after-market bridges on Fenders
Give A Monkey A Brain.... didn't come out until 1993, so it was probably supporting The Reality Of My Surroundings
Yep. My bad. I often get those two muddled up...

Although I have used couriers many times and never had a problem (usually via Interparcel or parcel2go), if the bass is expensive I would consider making a personal trip (or encouraging the buyer to do so). Its fine when things go well, but I have heard some real horror stories about when it doesn't.... Is it worth the risk?
Hi Guys, We are the lucky folk who are continuing Andys Legacy
Will the specs be identical to the old Wizards? If so, consider a set of Hammers as good as ordered!
They are still great fun but nothing like that original line up. That was the best band I've ever seen.
Absolutely! I saw them at the Newcastle Riverside in 1991 on (what I think was) the Give a Monkey a Brain... tour. Simply brilliant. I've kind of lost touch with them since....

Does it have to be hum-free? If it has a decent output, the hum would be so much quiter in comparison... It would give you a lot more options in terms of tone.
I feel I could tell from the response of the speaker. Would be an interesting 'test'
It would! But (and I ask out of genuine interest here) how would you feel if you were wrong?

Give it a try! I've just done something similar, putting the neck of a 2007 CIJ Geddy Lee J (based on a 1972 model, so definitely "70s style") onto my 2009 MIM J. It looks nice and plays well. What's not to like? Have a look here for a related thread... http://basschat.co.uk/topic/236850-jazz-bass-dilemma/
My Fender 60 RI use to have a J-Retro preamp intalled for 5 years but I decided to convert it back to passive
If I'd hung on to my Marcus Miller J, I probably would have done the same. Too much to fiddle with. Too hard to get a good tone and then not lose it when i accidentally knocked a knob (oo-er!). I love the sound of a passive J, but sometimes it just needs a bit of a boost. An outboard EQ unit is probably just right for that.
Geoff, I have no idea if a Geddy Lee neck will fit on another Fender body ( actually, I expect it probably will fit on at least some , maybe all standard four bolt fixings ) , but if it does, bear in mind the chances of getting a tight neck join are a bit hit and miss,
Did the swap last night. Interestingly, the Geddy neck is a perfect fit on the MIM body, but the Mex neck on the Jap body leaves an annoying gap between the end of the neck and the body of around 2-3mm. I also swapped the bridges over, so now the Mex body (still with Mex pickups) has a Jap Geddy neck and a Badass II bridge! Kind of a "Gringo Geddy" perhaps... The dark rosewood fingerboard of the Mex neck looks great on the black Geddy body - especially with the black scratchplate, so I may be onto something here! I'll get some photos taken on sunday... First impressions (after a little while to let the necks settle and "bed in") are good - but both will need the bridges altering for the height of the action. I quite like this customisation business!
