The reason that it seems to be a problem here is that the cheerleaders seem to react just as much as the ante's when someone diagrees. That perpetuates the same thing over and over.
What perpetuates these threads, and their (often negative) content, is comments like the above. Why do people have to either "cheeleaders" or "ante's" (sic) in your mind? Many of the people that you perceive to be cheeleaders are simply satisfied customers, who are just as discerning as you, but have come to different conclusions. I still fail to understand why you feel it to be your mission to constantly make negative comments in every thread that mentions Barefaced. Counter-opinions are valuable, but you are starting to sound like a stuck record! Edit - Discreet got in there first...

OK, it's a bit of a showcase, but just watch and listen to how many different tones he gets and how many techniques he uses in this short clip... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOVcYVkUGHw#t=105
Companies know the importance of a good finish and inevitably resources are diverted from other areas to fund it. M
Yes - like the drivers for instance Which brings us back to Barefaced - design your cabs around top-notch speakers, keep them feather-light, and maybe (possibly even inevitably) cut corners on the quality* of the finish. * Quality is, of course, a very subjective quantity....

NBD: MIJ Fender Jazz 75, 70s spacing... but what about those EMGs?
I think there's an EMG J set in the for sale section just now.
Hmmmmm..... <heads over to the for sale section...> Edit - a bit pricey for me at the moment... -
wouldn't mind another Jazz for balance All natural with maple and white blocks would have to be the one
Have a try of a CIJ Marcus Miller. Brilliant basses with awesome necks. Not sure about the preamps, but presumably it would be easy to replace them with passive circuitry.... Well worth a look! -

If you decide you don't like the EMGs after all, I'll buy them from you! My old Geddy Lee had EMGs in it and I loved its tone. My new(er) one has the original Fender US vintages in and I'm not so keen on the sound... Fickle buggers ain't we? -
I'd feel confident I could tell..... if you lined them up and A/B'd between them...
I'd be genuinely interested in the results of such a test - assuming it could be arranged!

Help - need something small, light, and loud!
Nice B/F compact will do the job as well.
Ticks all the boxes except (maybe) the requirement for treble. Depends on the OP's ears though - I never found my Compact to be lacking in top-end, but several other people have. If you are used to tweeters, the Compact may seem a bit "dark" in comparison. Amazing mid-range though, which really sits nicely in any band mix (IMO). Great deal if you can pick up a used one for £400 or less. -
both the woodworking and finishing have moved on since the early one-bloke-in-a-garage days...
Yeah. I think there are three or four of them now...
You should never search for a cab with a specific driver size in mind, just worry about weather the cab sounds good to you or not.
Agreed. If you couldn't see the speakers through the grille, and there was no identifier on the cab itself; I wonder how many bass players could plug into an anonymous "black box" cabinet and be able to identify the size of the speaker(s) inside just from how the cab sounded? My guess is that it wouldn't be very many - especially if the speakers were decent quality. I think some of us are confusing cabinet quality with driver diameter. A crap 4x10 will never sound as good as a decent 2x12. That doesn't inherently make 12" speakers better! That said.... I like fifteens.... Five of my last six cabs have contained at least one fifteen inch speaker.
Yes - everyone's version of 'mastery' differs. I don't get despondent at all listening to that, as it does nothing for me whatsoever.
Oh, don't get me wrong - I don't like the music, but I am rather in awe of his obvious mastery of the intrument. I feel the same way about Bobby Vega, and much prefer his musicality.
I'd be more impressed by a guy that can write a good tune with the only three chords he knows how to play, than someone who can copy note for note complicated solos someone else has written...
Better known as the "Clown-whore" debate...
Bass is an instrument that is easy to learn but incredibly difficult to master.
True - but I suspect that everyone's version of "mastery" differs. I like to think that I can play reasonably well (within certain genres)... but when I hear a guy like this I feel rather despondent...
So come on Alex , come and join in , we won't bite......honest !!
To be fair, I have found Alex's contributions to threads like this to be extremely balanced and helpful. He even gives the "fanboys" a bit of a hard time on occasion - especially when they make incorrect or hyperbolic claims... It doesn't bother me at all when people say they dislike BF cabs. Horses for courses. Every cab from every manufacturer offers a solution to a problem. All of those "solutions" involve compromises. For some of us, the compromises work, for others they don't - so they try (and ultimately buy) something else. It really isn't that much of a problem.
It's not your posts I'm thinking about in particular. At least you have had experience of the product and didn't like it, that's fair enough. But there seems to be a feeling of resentment somehow that Alex is succeeding where perhaps others haven't? I really don't know - I'm guessing. Perhaps I'm reading too much into it! First world stuff, anyway.
I believe this thread covers most of it... Bass is definitely easier for me... My big, fat fingers make accurate fretting of a six string just about impossible. Still, I wouldn't have it any other way. I always felt drawn to the bass parts of the music I listened to - even before I played any instruments at all. I had lessons on piano, guitar and trombone when I was at school and just never gelled with any of them. Then, in 1978, I heard Jeff Wayne's version of War of the Worlds. Herbie showed me the way! I would also say that it is easy to play bass, but very hard to play bass well. By "well", I mean solidly and creatively. In a band context, a bass player is like a referee in sport - the good ones seldom get noticed by the fans, but the bad ones spoil everyone's enjoyment!

Hold on to your horses Sam, this could be a bumpy ride! Flippancy aside, there will be dozens of different recommendations from dozens of different people - who will mostly advise you to use what they use... If you like the sound you get with one PF210, my advice would be to get another one.
Some of the responses here seem almost angry, which I find odd. If a product doesn't tick your boxes, choose something else. You don't have to rail against it's very existence.
I totally agree with you - but clearly some other members don't. And they DO seem to think that their mission in life is to rail against the very existence of Barefaced Bass, its owner and its products. All a bit sad and tedious really. One would think that they would have better things to do...
True indeed, but not everyone can afford £7-800 for a "Decent Cab".
True of course, but by shopping carefully and buying second-hand these "decent cabs" can be had for a lot less than that.
I'm guessing three of these would mean a 4 ohm load? Hence the same speakers as the 6x10?
A modular, 4 ohm, 6x10 - costing £1200?! Not sure that's a particularly big section of the market...
+1 Convert it to passive and get rid of the battery problems forever. IMHO

If the pickup is an active EMG then it'll need to be replaced too if the OP wants to go fully passive with no batteries.
Yes. The battery is indicating that there is a problem - not the problem itself. Get the bass checked out by a proper luthier or technician (unless you understand the electronics yourself - which you probably don't or you wouldn't be asking this question!)

Best price I could find (after a short search) is here - http://www.bestbassg...kups-mj-set.htm Buying from the US has pros and cons. Yes, you will have to pay shipping and may get hit for tax, but the conversion rate makes them pretty affordable compared to buying over here.
