1. The above-mentioned Leigh Gorman:
  2. To name but three! And, of course, anything featuring Bobby Vega, Leigh Gorman, Bruce Foxton, Bruce Thomas or J. J. Burnel...
  3. Not me. I am quite heavy-handed so I need to give the strings room to breathe... That's not to say that I set my action deliberately high, just not so low that the strings rattle and buzz against the frets.
  4. Hi there! You might like this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GzW5ApHYglU
  5.
At first I found his timing too frantic and it made me feel anxious,
I felt that too!
  6.
Thing is, maybe they didn't think it was that important to mention it and now it's grown so it's awkward. You have to speak to them and clear the air before doing anything rash
This. Some people are just really bad at communicating. They may not have meant any harm. On the other hand, I think that good bands usually have a genuine rapport between the members. That usually aids meaningful communication. Did you have good comms with your band mates before this situation arose, or was it always a bit crap?
  7.
I know people have their preferred method of cleaning but, all you are effectively doing is trying to 'de-grease' the string, and the easiest way to do this is simply a bowl of very hot water and some washing up liquid, just wipe them in the water with a cloth until no more marks appear.
Yes, that's another method - but I don't agree that it is the easiest. Sourcing some IMS (Industrial Methylated Spirit or "alcohol") can be a pain, but once you have it all you need to do is coil the strings up according to the size of your vessel (I use an old "Vitalite" margarine tub), pop them in and pour the liquid over them. Leave them for a few hours, giving them the odd swirl, then take them out and drain the alcohol off. No need to even dry them!

  9.
It's Fish , but I don't know the title.
It is.... but the title is all!
  10.
John Cooper Clarke?
Nope. Clue: This guy pretty much invented a new girls' name in 1985 (or thereabouts...).
  11.
It's not Dylan, is it..?
You are 100% correct!! It's not Dylan
  12.
i am struggling to get intonation on the E string.....may need a bit of stretching first??
Are they the same gauge as the strings you took off? Even if they are, there is variation from brand to brand. Your intonation may need adjusting slightly One of the downsides of changing your brand or gauge of string!
  13.
Remember your dream is your only scheme.
So keep on pushing Curtis Mayfield - Move on up Next.... "Do you still keep paper flowers in the bottom drawer with your Belgian lace"

  15.
I have owned a BF super 12

I'm using Berg CN112s
Read the OP again guys... It asks about BF Big Twin and Berg CN212 I have owned and played neither. So my opinion is probably valid too...
  16.
Sat night gig, different venue, VERY different eq settings. Every time I think I'm sorted a new gig comes along that needs different eq'ing.
Which is exactly why bass amps have EQ! Setting the controls "flat" is just a starting point.
  17. Having played Elites for many years, I decided to try some other brands about five years ago. Having tried DRs, D'Addarios, Fenders, Laklands, Newtones, LaBellas and Ernie Balls (I change my strings fairly frequently!), and liked (and disliked) aspects of all of them - I finally decided to go back to the strings that I used as a teenager, over 30 years ago - Rotosound RS66s. And I really like them!! Strangely though, I don't like then straight out of the pack. I prefer them after a few hours in alcohol/IMS/methylated spirits... After this treatment they sound more zingy (which is my preference) and last much longer before going dull. They can then be resoaked and refitted a couple of times before being consigned to my school's music department and their cheap basses! At around £16 a set, I find that they also make far better sense than some of the sets I used to use which cost nearly three times that amount! Totally agree with the comments about different basses working better with different strings though...
  18.
This one was born in May
Stop it! I was born in May 1966 too! I console myself that the pickup is three years older than me, therefore I shouldn't buy this. It's working.... so far!
  19. Thirty all. Skychaserhigh to serve.
  20.
Don't get sucked into the flat eq thing , It's nonsense.
Really? In what way is it "nonsense"?
  21.
Why can't you just turn the P bass volume pot down a touch to compensate?
Maybe it's just me (and I have no idea of the science behind this, if there is any!) but when I reduce the volume on any passive bass (and especially a P-type bass) there appears to be a loss of tone too... Completely subjective of course!
  22.
The BDI21 does change the tone of my streamer. But, that's a good thing in my case.
You need to be careful using one with a Jazz bass though, especially if (like me) you favour using both pickups on full. The BDI21 tends to suck mids, and the J doesn't have a lot to start with...
  23.
I'm not going to even think about changing the original pups in a '68, that would be sacrilege.
I can see your point, if you have one eye on re-sale value. But even then, you could pop the original pickups back in. Are you sure that it even is all original? Unless you've owned it from new, it can be very hard to tell what modifications previous owners have made... Surely a better definition of "sacrilege" is to have a lovely old bass, that was made to be played, and you don't play it because the sound is too weak! Just nudge up the volume or gain on your amp a smidge when you switch from the P to the J
  24.
I was excited when Geddy resurrected that black/maple bass for Counterparts and it sounds nice and meaty on that album, as you would expect considering it is essentially the sound of an old Fender cranked through a vintage Ampeg SVT, but after that album his tone went downhill , to my taste at least.
Yeah. I see where you are coming from. I think the gnarly, clanky Jazz tone worked well with the stripped-back, raunchy sound of that particular album. It sounds a lot more conspicuous and attention-seeking amid the more lush production of subsequent releases. I wonder how much of it is linked to some kind of contract with Fender? I believe the Geddy Lee sig J bass is one of the most popular J models ever made. The fact that Geddy himself has played one (or something similar) pretty much exclusively for the past 20 years must keep the model in the public eye to some extent...
