1.
sold locally
Could you edit the thread title so that people will know it is sold, please?
 2. Sell the Compact and buy a Super 12T? Or trade your Compact for an S12T? http://basschat.co.u...condition-l600/ Or, just to add another option (sorry!) - a TKS H115? Not hugely dissimilar in size to a Compact, but much more top end from the (variable) tweeter. Also very light and very loud. I tried one in tandem with my Compact and they sounded great together. 3.
I am a long time lover of the Fender Jazz Bass. I love the jazz tones, especially the bridge pickup Jaco tone, but want my bass to have more sonic flexibility and an expanded tonal range, as well as more power.
I think you could maybe get both by fitting a John East J retro. No routing needed and you could return your bass to original condition very quickly and easily if you wanted to sell it. http://www.bassdirect.co.uk/bass_guitar_specialists/East_Preamps_J_Retro.html I realise this may not be what you want to hear though...
 4.
I have an always-on compressor on my board, but even when not using this, I don't find sound levels a problem when switching back and forth. It's a different tone, but not necessarily a louder/quieter signal.
This. Except for the compressor bit.
 5.
Our guitarist once had the wonderful idea of getting picks with the band name on them, we had to order 144 of them, they'd last about half a song before snapping, finished up chucking them into the crowd
You get crowds?!?!
 6. Pretty much anything! I usually nick them off guitarists...
 7.
This really is someone's ideal bass.
I'd love to bring this baby back to the North East... but funds just don't allow it at the moment
 8.
I do really want a jazz - I think they tick all the boxes for for a passive but by definition of what they are they'll never be able to create the modern bass tone that other brands have & that sounds so perfect at certain times.
Not true! My Marcus Miller Jazz has an active preamp and can do a heck of a lot more than a passive J. And it's for sale!!
 9.
a Jazz Bass, with a John East retro pre amp, can do everything I (and probably most other bassists) need a bass to do.
I know what you mean. I really like the Marcus J retro, but I find that I am constantly fiddling with it, and if I knock it at all it takes ages to get back the sound I had. No problem for recording, but a bugger when rehearsing or gigging. There is a beautiful simplicity to the passive tone controls on a J. I just wish there was a way of boosting the mids other than using an outboard EQ unit!
 10.
Having multiple basses always bother me. Not because I don't like the bass, is I always use the same bass for gig. This is because the band required that particular sound, so therefore that particular bass is always getting use.
I'm finding that with my current band. I have come to the conclusion that Jazz basses really work for me, but not all Jazz basses work in the band! My MIM Standard just "works". So did my CIJ Geddy Lee. But My CIJ Marcus Miller just doesn't quite fit (me or the band) as perfectly. But there are still loads of basses that I haven't tried yet! Top of that list is probably Musicman, but there are lots of others. You just never know which bass will surprise you (for good or bad!).
 11.
a 4 string marcus miller for me. lusted for one for a long time, bought used in almost new condition, tried to like it, modified it with new pups and pre, and even though my mate told me its the best bass that he played, I just can't seem to bond with that bass.
Me too. Exactly the same with exactly the same bass. Even more so with a Spector Euro LX. No matter how much I wanted to love it, it just didn't "talk to me" in the same way that my Status or MIM Standard J do! The beauty of buying or trading them second (or more!) hand on here is that you can find all of this out without taking to much (if any) of a financial hit. Hurray for Basschat! Still, I look forward to being disappointed by lots more basses in the future!
 12. You might have more luck selling the Wizards separately... they are getting quite sought after now! If they are Hammers, I might be interested myself
 13. A beautiful example of a sought after bass! These are now made in Mexico, so the Japanese-made ones will only increase in value in the future. Get one now while they are still affordable!! Being CIJ, the routing is immaculate - so the scratchplate can be dispensed with according to taste. I like it without! (See pics below) This particular bass has been sold or traded a few times on here in the last couple of years. Links to the last two threads: http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1753965 http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry2288494 The bass has been listed previously as being made in 1995, but the MM signature model wasn't introduced until 1998! I e-mailed Fender, who confirmed its year of manufacture as 2005/6. It has the standard MM features - Badass II bridge, reverse-action tuners, lovely bound maple neck with pearloid block inlays, ash body, chrome neck pickup cover (currently not attached)... but this one has been upgraded with the addition of a John East Marcus J Retro preamp (widely regarded as far superior to the original Fender one), a real bone nut and a different set of pickups (again, the standard Fender ones are thought of as a bit average). The threads above refer to Seymour Duncan Antiquity IIs, but I found them a bit polite for my taste and swapped them for a set of Wizard Hammers - which are the best J pickups I've tried. There are a couple of minor dings on the neck which I have tried to show here. They are noticeable but in no way serious. There is one more just next to the jack socket but I can't get it to come out on any pictures! I have taken lots more photos but seem to have reached my upload limit... Just ask if you want more and I will e-mail them. It plays beautifully and sounds incredible. The preamp offers massive amounts of cut and boost to bass, treble and middle (which is sweepable). It is the control over the mids that really gives this Jazz such enormous versatility. If I am honest though, I find the East controls a bit excessive. I spend more time fiddling with them instead of just playing the damn thing! It would be fantastic as a studio bass, but I don't do a lot of that at the moment. I think the standard VVT J controls suit my simple brain better. I have weighed it on my kitchen scales and a set of baggage scales, and although neither are massively accurate, the bass weighs around 10.5 pounds. No lightweight by any means, but due to its excellent balance I find that it feels less heavy after a three hour rehearsal than my 8.5lb MIM Standard J!! Not sure how that works! The upgrades alone are worth over £300!! Happy to consider trade offers for other basses (ideally a CIJ Geddy Lee J with cash in my direction), amps, cabs, effects, women, etc...
 14. Great review! These basses look awesome (it helps if you like black blocks on maple - which I DO!) so it is good to know that they sound decent as well. I wonder if that body would fit a standard Fender J neck? At that price it's cheaper than a refin in surf green....
 15. Damn. I have been looking for another one of these for awhile...
 16.
The Mexican ones I have tried have been just as good as the Japanese, and generally a touch lighter. This is IMO a fair and sensible price for both buyer and seller. Cracking bass, good price, somebody get in quick.
Maybe, but there is no doubt that the Jap versions are still more highly regarded and sought after. Perhaps in a few years the MIM ones will catch up... And second-hand value doesn't necessarily reflect what the bass cost new - especially if they are unusual and sought-after (which, to an extent, the MMs are). Anyway, the market will stand what the market will stand!
 17.
Nice to see a Miller at a sensible price.
Sensible?! That's a serious bargain, that is! Lovely basses these. Even though they tend to be a bit on the heavy side, they balance very well indeed.
 18.
- for the price of a deluxe you could get a killer bass from one of the others...
Or two Geddy Lees!! One black, one sunburst maybe?
 19.
Nice looking bass.... hope the profit goes to Sue Ryder foundation........... Worthwhile charity and a good bass that was sold to help the needy
I think a PM would have been more appropriate for a comment like this?
 20.
It's a bit weird that you comment on your own comments - just put them all in to one big one.
I take it that comment was aimed at me. I wasn't commenting on my own comments, simply replying to a number of other comments (yours included) in some sort of random order... I tend to think of these thread discussions as being like a conversation face to face. I think it makes for a better conversation if the participants make a series of shorter comments rather than a single, trailing monologue. You clearly disagree. That's cool. You asked for advice about two specific basses. We tried to give you that. You've made your mind up and decided to go for one of them. That's cool as well. Sounds like a pretty successful thread to me! BTW, I never said that you hadn't played the US Deluxe - I was just advising you to play both/all of the basses you were considering. You seem to be cherry-picking at the advice you have been given. We are only trying to help - as you said yourself that you haven't been playing long. Whatever. It's your money.
 21.
960 euros? 800 pounds or so. You might get £550 if you were lucky
Agreed. The market is very slow at the moment, and although Fenders are still selling, they are often going for less than the seller might have hoped for... Actually, I've just looked at the link above and they are now going new for 898 euros, which is £745 at today's rate. £550 is looking a bit generous maybe...
 22.
I though the pickups in the geddy were american vintage, they're surely not run of the mill!
What makes you say that? To what are you comparing them?
 23.
I had a MIJ Geddy Jazz and it had the best neck ever! But if you don't like slim (front to back) then you may disagree. All the necks I have ever had have been gloss finish, I don't find it an issue.
I thought the neck finish was beautiful. Smooth and slick and definitely not as "glossy" as many other Fenders I've played and owned (including my MIJ Marcus Miller), which can feel a bit "draggy" if you know what I mean. I loved everything about the neck on my CIJ Geddy, and from what I have read the MIJ ones are just as good!
I didn't know the geddy lee is made in mexico these days. Tbh, with the pickups in the deluxe and the graphite truss rod I'm thinking I might go for the american deluxe jazz.
Fair enough mate - but you did ask for help/advice! The US deluxe is over twice the price of the Geddy, which does imply higher quality. Whether it is more than twice as good is open to conjecture and discussion... One thing I do know though. If I was spending that sort of money on a new bass, I would make sure I tried it (and its competitors) in the flesh first. Fenders are notorious for their variability, so even though I loved my Geddy Lee I might play others that I don't get on with so well. It's the nature of the beast I'm afraid.
