1.
You can sound as "old school" as you like with Barefaced cabs, the 69'er and S15 for instance.
Yes. My Vintage was very "old school"!!
 2.
http://www.rollingst...s-says-20131217 With all that is going on with the Pixies, even I am expecting the call up....!
Are you called Kim?
 3.
Look how much BF gear comes up in amps for sale... we are almost to a man (and woman) a right fickle bunch of gits.
Indeed. I can't believe that I nearly sold my Compact to fund the purchase of a Genz cab! Fortunately the buyer was very understanding when I changed my mind... Why is it that we can be sublimely happy with our gear, but still look at the ads section and be tempted by stuff that is less good than what we already have?? I need to play more gigs so I have less time to spend in Basschat's marketplace!!
 4.
And are these block inlay decals any good? as I wasn't sure whether they would rub of and look really shabby with playing. Thanks in advance
To me, they looked and felt almost like the real thing. And for a fiver you can't go wrong if you like the look of blocks (which I do!).
 5.
Yes thats it!!! They feel like slow worm / Millipedes..
More millipede than slow-worm IME... and I used to have pet slow-worms too! Call me a masochist if you like (I can take it... ) but I like the rough feel of Roto 66s... keeps my finger-ends tough. They can be a bit hard on the frets though.
 6.
I'm in High Wycombe, Bucks.
I think he was referring to the OP?!
 7.
MM20 is right in a sense that you can f*** your back picking up your car keys with bad technique. Lighter weight will help a lot, but you should avoid twisting and stretching, and bending your lower back. And remember that manual handling is not just lifting stuff, it's lowering too, and pushing and pulling, carrying and supporting.
Very true - and good advice. I was probably being over sensitive - it's not been a great weekend. Apologies to Gareth and anyone else my pontifications have irritated
 8.
The 'carry'/'weight' thing gets on my nerves a little. It's all in the lift, staying healthy and being super careful! Just ask for help!!! It's nice to be able to get cabs that are pretty light, but it isn't everything to me.

there is no need for excessive weight, and we SHOULD ALL make sure we don't put pressure on our backs. I am lucky to always have assistance with moving gear. IMO - If its too heavy and wide to move yourself, use a £20 trolley off Amazon and get a friend to help with the lifts.

I realise this is a serious matter for anyone with injuries, but there are no doubt many who have developed this obsession with the new technology regarding 'one schelp from car to gig'.

I offered my opinion,
None of these comments strike you as being slightly, er... patronising? I am a big strong guy, and I choose to use lightweight cabs. So maybe I am taking your advise after all!
 9.
Padlock ready...
Well, I have to say that after five pages and a lot of debate, that this thread has not been the car crash that some predicted! Well done Basschat!
 10.
I realise this is a serious matter for anyone with injuries, but there are no doubt many who have no issues, have a full band of willing helpers, good transport, etc, who have developed this obsession with the new technology regarding 'one schelp from car to gig'.
I think you are the one coming across as "obsessed"! I have no back-related problems as such, but I am in my late forties now. No matter how many people are in my band, they are not there when I load my car up at the start of the night. Often, as I am first to get to most gigs and rehearsals, there will be nobody there to help me load in. I have a busy life, so I don't want to waste my time doing things I dislike. I dislike carrying heavy, awkward-shaped objects around (when there is an alternative). I have done my time transporting a Trace Elliot stack by myself. Weaving in between drunken punters and posing singers carrying two large, nearly 50kg boxes (sometimes one in each hand!) soon gets wearing, as does skinning one's knuckles on countless doorways and bannisters. Nowadays, I can concentrate more on the actual playing instead of the furniture removal. If that gets on your nerves, well I'm sorry - but that's your problem!
 11.
We had a Bedford Rascal once and we used it for scrap metal. So there.
Fixed.
 12. OMG - They're awesome!!!
 13.
Dick Dale's version of Misirlou.
Good call! Or this one... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GWw55XhTehg&list=PL541375AC7BE86908
 14.
X-Factor for musicians ?! no-one would watch it. Despite us musicians thinking we are very, very important, and overlooked and undervalued, it's the singer in popular music that the audience identifies with. Singers generate reaction and opinion even if those reactions and opinions are from the clueless, they generate in the audience a passionate sense of good and bad, right and wrong, justice and injustice. So they watch and vote and help create the hysteria. Show me an instrumentalist who can generate that kind of reaction.
This. It may be a frustrating situation, but if we want more recognition for our skills/ability/devotion we need to become singers! People notice singers, even if it is just to say "look at that w***er!!". Not many people leave gigs talking about bass players.... well, except other bass players of course, and even then - only if the singer isn't a w***er.
 15.
I can prove this with my current Orange 1x15, the test I did with a Compact Gen 1, and the cabs I have here that do have decent horns.
"Prove" what? You're talking about personal preferences there. How can they ever be "proved" other than to yourself?
 16.
I've used my Streamliner through a Compact and a TechSoundsystems 2x12 and have to say that the 2x12 wins hands down. Compact is a good cab but won't compete with your Neox if you ask me.
Interesting. My experience was exactly the opposite! Just shows how subjective sound is...
 17. If Barefaced had a slick website, people would accuse them of being all style over substance or "fur coat an' nae knickers". You can't win!
 18.
Not sure about that.... Anything high up the fretboard gets lost...like slides and trills
Garbage! IMO of course! And if that were the case, I think you'd need to look at your EQ settings... even with a J bass and Hartke LH500 (both known to be rather shy of mids) I have no problem whatsoever with hearing myself through my Compact - anywhere on the fretboard. However, when I tried a Genz Benz NX2-212T... mids all gone and poor audibility. Horses for courses, naturally - but to say any BF cab causes lost signal is just wrong (IME).
 19. Welcome to the discussion Mr Budbear! Excellent post my friend! The whole point of a bass guitarists' forum is that it represents the tip of the iceberg - the players who are interested in discussing their trade/hobby, who are interested in new gear, new techniques, styles, etc. By their very nature, they will be the ones who are open to new developments. Of course, for every bass player who is a member on here (and/or Talkbass) there will be dozens more who are not - who are happy to gig every weekend with their Ampeg, Trace Elliot, Peavey, Ashdown, SWR gear with no idea of and no interest in what else is out there. Goodluck to 'em! What a dull world it would be if we all just stuck to old dogma
 20.
Let your ears and heart make the choice.
Ears, yes. But where does the heart come in? I think that's what causes the problems with some people - their expectations based on past experiences. Big + heavy = good Light = cheap and shoddy. Lightweight box = lightweight tone. Try 'em all, and go with what you like best! In my case, there are many brands and cabs yet to try - but I am yet to play/own a cab that I liked better than my Compact (except maybe my Vintage - but that was just a bit on the large side for what I am currently doing).
 21. I think it depends on what you are doing, music-wise. If you play a lot of slap or use a lot of harmonics - then a good tweeter can be an asset. Otherwise, a tweeter can introduce a nasty, clicky, fizzy bite to the tone IME. Like every piece of gear, you need to be careful how and when you use it. I think the ideal compromise is a cab with an adjustable tweeter- this allows experimentation. I haven't had a cab with a tweeter for a couple of years, and haven't missed one... until this week when I trialled a TKS H115. It has a very nice adjustable tweeter, and in many other ways is quite similar to a Compact. Nice cab, nice tone. Maybe worth consideration if you are thinking about a Compact but want to keep the option of a tweeter?
 22.
The only thing that bugged me a little about the 1126 is that it's squat, like the Berg 12s and Aggie DBs, so it's firing at your calves. Not a problem with a pair (that would sound massive..!) but if it was my main single cab, I'd get one in vertical configuration.
Yes. And, er..... YES!!
 23.
Mind you what I would like is all these barefaced critics to point me in the direction of something like the big baby 2 that I could build myself -that would be more useful!
You need advice on making babies?
 24.
I think an EQ tweak would have worked wonders on the 1126. I actually found it to be the opposite... very wide, with a big, open low end.
I suspect you are bang on there mate! But my constant changing over of leads was starting to irritate my bandmates, so the review was somewhat curtailed! I'd like to give it another blast in the cause of fairness. But my son has been playing his guitar through the 1126 this evening, and it sounds brilliant! I could see a lot of guitarists loving this cab - especially in the tweed!! Fender-tastic!
 25.
I wonder how long a BF would last getting thrown in and out of a van twice a day.
From my experience, quite a while! The reputation for flimsiness is undeserved.
