Speaker driver ratings are the same ones used for DJ speakers which run heavily compressed full range music all night. That limit assumes that you are delivering is RMS value constantly. If a bass player does that, he's a poor player.
A bit unfair perhaps? If the music/band/situation calls for it (and it could happen, I suppose!) then surely that makes you a good player? Doing what is required? Just a thought!

Presumably when you run your amp at anything less than full volume (with lots of low-end EQed in) you are underpowering your cabs.... It's kind of meaningless isn't it?
Depends on what you mean by bi-amping - are you using a crossover to send only the deep lows to the Compact?
If so, that's not really what it was designed for! Better with a big PA sub I would have thought...

Nothing "dubby" about the Compact (unless you EQ it that way). Very clean and clear. Responds well to EQ and dynamics. Loud as you like. Oh, and they are really LIGHT too!
I still find it hard to believe that a single 12" could give me the sort of sound I'm used to!

I'm still dubious if 2 x 12" BF Compacts could do similar
Bear in mind that it is only the new (Generation 3) Compacts that have a 12" speaker. All the older models were a fifteen. Not that the diameter of the speaker makes that much difference in itself...

There are a couple of used Compacts for sale in the marketplace at the moment, so you could save yourself a lot of money by going down that route... then if (for whatever reason) you find it lacking you could sell it on for what you paid for it. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/222586-l325-another-price-drop-barefaced-compact-with-roqsolid-cover/page__p__2295059__hl__compact__fromsearch__1#entry2295059 http://basschat.co.uk/topic/223075-fs-barefaced-compact-later-model-metal-grille-l380/page__p__2295262__hl__compact__fromsearch__1#entry2295262 On the other hand, Alex offers a one month trial on new purchases - so if you don't like it you can return it. I've not tried a BB, but I don't find the Compact lacking in top end at all, despite the lack of a tweeter. It depends on what you use and the sound you want of course!

Never heard her or heard of her before! Thanks for posting. Awesome band. You can hardly see her behind that enormous bass!!
The Wilkinson WBP (about £27 on ebay) is as good as anything out there IMO. And I'm very much looking for similar tones as the OP.
GFS do a really good one too http://www.guitarfet...-hot_p_334.html I had one in a Squier Affinity and (at the time) played in a band doing a lot of Stranglers, Jam, Costello and Clash stuff. To my ears it sounded pretty authentic

Today I played Herbie Flower's 1959 Jazz Bass
like most other Fenderites, I don't buy this one.
I must have missed this thread the first time around, so I've been trying catch up on it today. I have always loved Herbie and his playing, even before I played bass myself! But you are right, this story has a rather fishy aroma to it... -
If guys I play with are anything to go by, the most flexible way they beef up their sound is via some good pedals.
Yes, but as we say in the bass world - sh*t in = sh*t out. If he is unhappy with the tone of the pickup in the first place, he is unlikely to like it after some outboard sound processing. Anyway, after all this it looks like we have an alternative solution! He is planning to keep his Strat as it is and fix up his old Jim Deacon SG copy. Best of both worlds maybe? Kids eh?
Compared with more modern basses the Musicmaster may not be great but it's certainly a decent bass when compared with a lot of other basses that were around in the 70s.
OK. Fair point. One does tend to forget that the cheaper end of the bass scale wasn't always as good as it is now.
Whose picking on Herbie?, quite the opposite if you read my post.
Chill man, it was a bit of fun relating to an earlier post in the thread. -
Just a quick note on the 'is it from '59?' debate. Experts have said for many years that this is not from '59...the colours used wouldnt have been available in '59....the decal that was used from very late '61 to '62. This would suggest the neck is from late '61 earliest....Also, the pickup cover screws are the smaller ones used from late '61 too. I am yet to hear of one 'expert', or Fender historian who believes this to be from 1959. And nobody would have sent a bass back to the factory in the early 60's because the decal wore off would they??
Sir, sir!!! The pedants are picking on Herbie again! -

Herbie Flowers in Portillo/Khan/Weather-man confusion!! So the little switch/slider on the scratchplate on the lower horn wasn't originally to control the fuzz-box thing? -
Looking for loud, heavy, old school SS amp. Recommendations
Conan replied to a topic in Amps and Cabs
Loud, heavy and old school? Lots of tone-shaping? Trace Elliot AH500, or even an old AH250. Mk V or earlier. They don't come up so often now, but are usually pretty cheap when they do... If this one is still available it would be right up your street - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/179717-vintage-one-owner-trace-elliot-rack-gp11-ra-500-2-x-250w-bi-amp-system-in-skb-6u-flightcase/page__p__1712034__hl__ah500__fromsearch__1#entry1712034 -
Eden and SWR (and I assume Hartke) 4x10's have a distinct hole in the middle of their frequency response - but so does the preamp in your amp. Be prepared to boost the mid range and go gentle on the lows to get definition and presence.
Bizarrely, the "flat" setting on the LH500 is bass and treble set at 2, middle on full!! Turning the bass and treble up any more than that actually cuts the midrange... Not too much of a problem as there is plenty of volume/power available - but it is a bit counter-intuitive and takes a bit of getting used to! Cab-wise, £300 almost brings you into the realms of second-hand Barefaced Compacts! I use one of them with my LH500 and it sounds great - really loud and clear - even though it is an 8 ohm cabinet. Beautifully light too, so shipping to north-east Scotland shouldn't be too much if you can source one...http://basschat.co.uk/topic/222586-l325-another-price-drop-barefaced-compact-with-roqsolid-cover/page__pid__2295059#entry2295059
Sorry, didn't realise it was a musicmaster. I remember them coming out. Cheap and nasty Fenders, only for those who just had to have a Fender at all costs but had no money. Leave well alone. They weren't any good then and they won't be any good now.
The first bass I owned was a Fender Musicmaster. Paid £70 for it back in around 1981. It was rubbish and suffered from horrible neck-dive. I find it hard to believe that they are becoming collectable!!
Two of the Ampeg cabs I can say are quality cabs, the Classic SVT-410HLF, and the Heritage HSVT-410HLF. I can't say about the other Ampeg cabs, but the monsters are still old school Ampeg.
Not exactly what you might call "portable" though, are they?
