1.
I wouldn't go for a bi-amp sub-bass rig myself. Decent enough concept, but doesn't achieve anything useful, IMO. The sound may be ok in itself...but you don't want sub bass on stage. You end up carrying twice the kit for the same volume as a fullrange stack which defeats the object of lightweight cabs. And even if I did want to pursue the bi-amp route, I wouldn't use the GK fudge. You'd want a decent pre ( pref with crossover and stereo outs, into a stereo amp and two cabs.) I did this with a 210 and 115 and it wasn't at all bad...but then the double up on the gear kicked in. and the perceived sound gain was in no way worth the carry. And you are contemplating doing it with cabs who best selling point is the light weight... IMO.
Excellent post
There's plenty of people doing it properly already.
Not excellent post
 2. Looking forward to the "replies" to this one....
 3. Play it first! I've played a few Affinities and although most are OK, some are outstanding. Get a good one and they are a brilliant platform for modding. The standard pickups are very weak, so I would replace that first. I put a (cheap!) GFS overwound in mine and it sounded great. A Bass Doc 3-ply plate, upgraded pots and I was away. It was my main bass for quite a while. If the neck is good, you can't go wrong! Edit - I see you have already played it. Why don't I read things properly before responding?

 7.
Speaker driver ratings are the same ones used for DJ speakers which run heavily compressed full range music all night. That limit assumes that you are delivering is RMS value constantly. If a bass player does that, he's a poor player.
A bit unfair perhaps? If the music/band/situation calls for it (and it could happen, I suppose!) then surely that makes you a good player? Doing what is required? Just a thought!
 8. Presumably when you run your amp at anything less than full volume (with lots of low-end EQed in) you are underpowering your cabs.... It's kind of meaningless isn't it?
 9.
At a recent gig some foam wadding from my mark 1 Compact blew all over the stage.
10.
Depends on what you mean by bi-amping - are you using a crossover to send only the deep lows to the Compact?
If so, that's not really what it was designed for! Better with a big PA sub I would have thought...

 13. Nothing "dubby" about the Compact (unless you EQ it that way). Very clean and clear. Responds well to EQ and dynamics. Loud as you like. Oh, and they are really LIGHT too!
 14.
I still find it hard to believe that a single 12" could give me the sort of sound I'm used to!

I'm still dubious if 2 x 12" BF Compacts could do similar
Bear in mind that it is only the new (Generation 3) Compacts that have a 12" speaker. All the older models were a fifteen. Not that the diameter of the speaker makes that much difference in itself...
 15. I think the word "cheesey" refers to the musicians' interpretation of what the audience would call "classic".
 16.
Smile on the water? Polaroid? I dont think I know those two!
They'd go well in a set that also features Rush's The Camera Eye and Def Leppard's Photograph....
 17. There are a couple of used Compacts for sale in the marketplace at the moment, so you could save yourself a lot of money by going down that route... then if (for whatever reason) you find it lacking you could sell it on for what you paid for it. http://basschat.co.uk/topic/222586-l325-another-price-drop-barefaced-compact-with-roqsolid-cover/page__p__2295059__hl__compact__fromsearch__1#entry2295059 http://basschat.co.uk/topic/223075-fs-barefaced-compact-later-model-metal-grille-l380/page__p__2295262__hl__compact__fromsearch__1#entry2295262 On the other hand, Alex offers a one month trial on new purchases - so if you don't like it you can return it. I've not tried a BB, but I don't find the Compact lacking in top end at all, despite the lack of a tweeter. It depends on what you use and the sound you want of course!
 18. Never heard her or heard of her before! Thanks for posting. Awesome band. You can hardly see her behind that enormous bass!!
 19.
The Wilkinson WBP (about £27 on ebay) is as good as anything out there IMO. And I'm very much looking for similar tones as the OP.
GFS do a really good one too http://www.guitarfet...-hot_p_334.html I had one in a Squier Affinity and (at the time) played in a band doing a lot of Stranglers, Jam, Costello and Clash stuff. To my ears it sounded pretty authentic
 20.
like most other Fenderites, I don't buy this one.
I must have missed this thread the first time around, so I've been trying catch up on it today. I have always loved Herbie and his playing, even before I played bass myself! But you are right, this story has a rather fishy aroma to it...
 21.
If guys I play with are anything to go by, the most flexible way they beef up their sound is via some good pedals.
Yes, but as we say in the bass world - sh*t in = sh*t out. If he is unhappy with the tone of the pickup in the first place, he is unlikely to like it after some outboard sound processing. Anyway, after all this it looks like we have an alternative solution! He is planning to keep his Strat as it is and fix up his old Jim Deacon SG copy. Best of both worlds maybe? Kids eh?
 22.
Compared with more modern basses the Musicmaster may not be great but it's certainly a decent bass when compared with a lot of other basses that were around in the 70s.
OK. Fair point. One does tend to forget that the cheaper end of the bass scale wasn't always as good as it is now.
 23.
Whose picking on Herbie?, quite the opposite if you read my post.
Chill man, it was a bit of fun relating to an earlier post in the thread.
 24.
Just a quick note on the 'is it from '59?' debate. Experts have said for many years that this is not from '59...the colours used wouldnt have been available in '59....the decal that was used from very late '61 to '62. This would suggest the neck is from late '61 earliest....Also, the pickup cover screws are the smaller ones used from late '61 too. I am yet to hear of one 'expert', or Fender historian who believes this to be from 1959. And nobody would have sent a bass back to the factory in the early 60's because the decal wore off would they??
Sir, sir!!! The pedants are picking on Herbie again!
 25.
Herbie Flowers said to me on tuesday, I'll bring in my '59 jazz and you can have a go, which was really cool for him to say
What a lovely story! And to think that some of us get so protective about our gear...
