1. Herbie Flowers in Portillo/Khan/Weather-man confusion!! So the little switch/slider on the scratchplate on the lower horn wasn't originally to control the fuzz-box thing?
 2. Loud, heavy and old school? Lots of tone-shaping? Trace Elliot AH500, or even an old AH250. Mk V or earlier. They don't come up so often now, but are usually pretty cheap when they do... If this one is still available it would be right up your street - http://basschat.co.uk/topic/179717-vintage-one-owner-trace-elliot-rack-gp11-ra-500-2-x-250w-bi-amp-system-in-skb-6u-flightcase/page__p__1712034__hl__ah500__fromsearch__1#entry1712034
 3.
Eden and SWR (and I assume Hartke) 4x10's have a distinct hole in the middle of their frequency response - but so does the preamp in your amp. Be prepared to boost the mid range and go gentle on the lows to get definition and presence.
Bizarrely, the "flat" setting on the LH500 is bass and treble set at 2, middle on full!! Turning the bass and treble up any more than that actually cuts the midrange... Not too much of a problem as there is plenty of volume/power available - but it is a bit counter-intuitive and takes a bit of getting used to! Cab-wise, £300 almost brings you into the realms of second-hand Barefaced Compacts! I use one of them with my LH500 and it sounds great - really loud and clear - even though it is an 8 ohm cabinet. Beautifully light too, so shipping to north-east Scotland shouldn't be too much if you can source one...http://basschat.co.uk/topic/222586-l325-another-price-drop-barefaced-compact-with-roqsolid-cover/page__pid__2295059#entry2295059
 4. Didn't think I would need to bump these!
 5.
Sorry, didn't realise it was a musicmaster. I remember them coming out. Cheap and nasty Fenders, only for those who just had to have a Fender at all costs but had no money. Leave well alone. They weren't any good then and they won't be any good now.
The first bass I owned was a Fender Musicmaster. Paid £70 for it back in around 1981. It was rubbish and suffered from horrible neck-dive. I find it hard to believe that they are becoming collectable!!
 6.
Two of the Ampeg cabs I can say are quality cabs, the Classic SVT-410HLF, and the Heritage HSVT-410HLF. I can't say about the other Ampeg cabs, but the monsters are still old school Ampeg.
Not exactly what you might call "portable" though, are they?
 7.
Would anyone else recommend Ampeg?
If portability is you goal, probably not. But portability could just mean small size - in which case some of the smaller Ampeg cabs might fit your bill. If you want light, not the best option.
 8.
I went from a heavy cab, to light cab, and back to the monster cab.
What was the light cab?
 9. Comes and goes, and depends on what I'm trying to do. In my current band the playing is mostly pretty straightforward and I feel pretty good about it. When I was recently trying to get a prog-metal band off the ground and trying to play Dream Theater-type lines, I felt very inadequate. Likewise in a couple of jazz-funk bands I have felt unable to play what I would have liked to be able to play... But then I realised that I just don't spend much time playing those kinds of music these days, so it is no surprise that I have not built up a broad repertoire in those styles. I am OK with that. I think it is a part of the musician's psyche to always feel that there are better players and to aspire to be better. Problem is, when full-time jobs and families come along - where does one find the time??
 10.

Now that is what I call music. Incredible. My favourite DB player by miles.
 11.
Ooh that's toughie, I can't pick just one. Current faves are: I'm Gonna Tear Your playhouse Down; Sledgehammer and Babooshka.
Stab in the dark here... but do you perchance play a fretless?
 12.
And a "Large Hall"!!!! Does the house have a selection of halls in differing sizes?
And different names? Maybe he has a John Hall.... OK, getting coat as we speak.
 13.
General view for me is that they're so cheap and I have so many of them that it's not really much of an issue either way.
Well, maybe I'm just odd in that I don't have any spare KETTLE LEADS, and never have. I've never seen the need to until now... If I bought an amp, having sold or traded my current one (see what I did there?) with it's lead, and my new amp arrived sans cable - I would be in the frustrating position of being unable to even try it out. I take the point that they are cheap, but I would then have to order one and wait for it to arrive... So what I have learned from this thread is to ASK the seller if the amp comes with a cable (whatever its name). If it doesn't, then that gives me a few days to purchase one. And everyone is happy - including the bloody skinflint who thinks it appropriate to sell and amp with no mains connector!!!
 14.
That's odd... I reckon they're loud and detailed... must have a rogue set.
Or this brand of pickups respond better to the tonal characteristics of your particular bass... It's all snake oil anyway, isn't it - this sound business?
 15.
Overall view of TKS 12/6. The build is superb, they look fantastic, the 12/6 sounds fantastic, and the weight is pretty damn good. The 12/6 goes very deep and throws out low end with no effort at all. I would personally want a tweeter but that is of course an option! The tone is very clean and crisp.

To be honest, we rehearse in quite a small space, so there wasn't much chance to move around a lot to see what the dispersion is like, so I think that it must be better than my current cabs. The TKS could go louder and it seemed to cut through much better for any given setting on the amp. The TKS was much more responsive to changing the settings on the amp as well.
Great stuff! I should hopefully be borrowing both of these cabs for a few days (thanks in advance WoT!) and will get the opportunity to use them at a full band rehearsal on wednesday. I'm looking forward to it!
 16. An excellent summary from Mr Funkle. Does any more need to be said?
 17. What a disappointing thread. None of the Tracey family, no Parker, no Lady Penelope.... and certainly none of these:
 18.
We specify them in PDU (Power Distribution Units) for clients' installations day in Day out. More Specifically it is IEC C13 (female) socket on the mains lead and where it plugs into, on the amp is called IEC C14 (male). Hello...? Hello...? Oh sorry, I thought you might be interested !
Fascinating! Well, OK... quite interesting anyway... And what (if anything) does IEC stand for? International Electrical Connector or something similar? The things you learn on Basschat!
 19.
Ah-ha. Ah-ha ha ha. 'Just like that'. Kettle lead, lead kettle. Ha, ha. lead - kettle. Ha ha.
20.
Because the connector on an actual kettle lead is a different shape so it wouldn't fit the mains input socket on an amp.
Well bugger me - I never knew that! So why do they get called kettle leads then?
 21.
Thank you for not saying "Kettle lead".
I'm no sparky - but what's wrong with calling them "kettle leads"? Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead....Kettle lead.... kettle lead.... Joking aside (for the moment) - I have honestly never thought of buying a spare UK mains to IEC (or whatever you call it) lead! Now that I think about it, I've been lucky so far never to need one! Note to self - buy a spare
 22. My MIM J sounds as good as any J I have heard before. These pickups must therefore be a factor. Great sound for pennies! Bump...
 23.
it seems second hand bergs, barefaced or aguilar would be the best options.
I don't think you can go far wrong with any of those options!
 24.
Lucky it is nice and light
Depends what you were using before that I suppose... I found it heavy for a Neo driven cab. But then I am used to very light cabs. I'll say no more...
