  1. Totally unpredictable! Sometimes you can play a supposedly great venue which has an excellent reputation, and it just doesn't work out. Could be the band members, the audience, the equipment... On the other hand, you can end up playing somewhere that nobody really wants to play, maybe on a bad night (weather-wise, or a clash with some big event...) and everything just comes together to make an outstanding time! For me, it is not about money (although that is not to say that I don't want or need to be paid!), but the enjoyment comes from the buzz. Where does the buzz come from? Well, usually rapport with your bandmates and playing the songs well, a receptive audience who are genuinely enjoying themselves, a good sounding room with plenty of feedback (of the right kind!), an appreciative venue owner/manager, good lighting, the correct temperature.... I could go on, but it is very difficult to quantify. Mostly, I think, it is about the audience. The problem is, if you turn up expecting all that - it rarely happens. Most of my "great" gigs have been surprises!
  2. Yes, quite sure! It is a 4a. It originally had a two band Glockenklang pre, but I wanted more control over the midrange so I specced the three band version. Glock wasn't available so Adrian put the Delano in.
  3. Only six months old. Absolutely unmarked. Due to my rather frustrating current band situation it hasn't been gigged, and only used at rehearsal about 8 times... Plays like a dream! Does all the usual Jazz bass stuff, which is no surprise as this is basically their take on the Fender Jazz bass - but generally using higher quality components and finished to a higher standard. But most of you who know about this brand already know this of course. Neck is 38mm at the nut, and feels just like a nice J should - not too chunky and not too slim. Made from maple, with black blocks. "Satin" finish, which is very reminiscent of the Fender Geddy Lee J basses I have owned. Make the neck very "fast" and comfortable to play. Body is alder. Pickups are Delano, as is the 3-band active preamp. Bridge is an in-house model, rather like a Hipshot A-style in design. Matching headstock (as you can obviously see in the photos). Speaking of the photos, these are not very good but I've put this ad up in a hurry and will take some better ones when I get time... Weight (mass!) is 9.5lb (about 4.3kg), which surprised me as this bass does not feel heavy! Comfortably solid and beautifully balanced, yes. Comes in a gorgeous Maruszczyk padded gig bag. I am happy to package it up securely for shipping (at buyer's cost and risk) but would be happier with collection. I will also deliver it locally (if mutually convenient, within a 30 mile or so radius of Newcastle upon Tyne, or anywhere along the A69/A75 corridor) for fuel costs. I have lots of positive feedback, so buy with confidence! Ideally after cash, but I could be interested in trades as long as it doesn't involve me having to add any cash. Just four-string bass guitars though - and most interested in Fender Jazzes, G&L M2000s or EBMM Sterlings. Try me!
  4. This is gorgeous, and I can't stop coming back and looking at it! I only need to sell one of my basses first...
  5. Stunning basses with a wonderful sound! Lovely necks too. Nice to see a model with a decent bridge...
  6. Hoping Neil Murray is going to post on this thread...
  7. In an original band?! I'm intrigued. Any links to some of their stuff? I'd quite like to hear that How much does the bassist's style influence the sound and feel of the band? If the answer is "quite a lot", then I think it would be a good idea to sound as much like him as you can, whilst still being yourself of course
  8. I should think so too - at that price!
  9. Try these - http://www.gtidistribution.co.uk/
  10. Loving that matching headstock!!
  11. Hmmm... bit of a minefield that one! Many couriers offer "insurance" and are happy to take payment for it - but when you read the small print it usually doesn't cover musical instruments! That said, I've shipped dozens of amps, cabs and basses over the years and never (yet) had an issue (touch wood!!). If you have something to ship it in, I might well be interested (and so, I suspect, would many others!)
  12. Ooooh! That's lovely.... would shipping be impossible? It's a long drive from Newcastle
  13. Lovely basses these. Some of the best that Fender ever made IMHO. Sadly I'm short of cash myself....
  14. Not sure how much of it is pure nostalgia, but I really miss my old TE gear. I had the Mk IV version of this and it was immense (in tone as well as mass!). This is a huge amount of rig for a silly low price
  15. The OP is (to my ears) a bizarre clash of styles. But somehow it kind of works! At least the first four minutes or so does. The wheels come off a bit after that and they sound like three music students trying to out-womble each other...
  16. I think that, to a certain extent, it depends on how many different genres they involve themselves in. Miller and Sheehan have not really strayed far outside their chosen (and fairly specific) genres. Compare that to someone like Pino for example who has played with lots of acts over the years. Although his fretless work is pretty easily identifiable, his playing on fretted basses is less so. And does he always sound like Pino? In style maybe, but not in tone I wouldn't say. Same goes for people like Bobby Vega and numerous others that I can't be bothered to think of...!
  17. Crikey - that was quick!
  18. Balok!! Or did you mean my own face Tom?!
  19. Full size bass... I'm six foot three and a bit "large-boned" mind... Moomintroll will (as always) provide a sense of scale
  20. A couple of years ago I sold my Status series II that I had bought new in 1986. Not quite in the same league (price-wise, at least) as your Wal, but still a pretty expensive bass. It was the usual story - the band I was in at the time didn't suit the Status's tone (and looks) and I wanted to free up some cash to try other brands... Now, I find myself in a 1980s covers band that cries out for a Status, but of course I can't afford to replace it with another. Buy a cheap(ish) P bass and keep the Wal!
  21. I work in a school, and our music department has one of those Aria STBs. It looks pretty good but when I played it I was very impressed! I don't like it quite as much as my J&D but it is very close.
  22. Aye. "Fish on Friday" was a top show. As was Rick Wakeman's Saturday morning slot Obviously a bit challenging for "White Van Man" who seems to be their target demographic these days...
  23. Better than Barefaced CHEEK! I'll leave the images to your imagination for that one...
  24. Yeah right
  25. Maybe the increase is to pay for the new product line?
