Conan replied to aj5string's topic in Amps and Cabs
What is it that you like about 12s? Purely the fact that they generally come in smaller boxes than 15s? I've never heard a Compact referred to as "too big" before... and it is certainly smaller than two cabs with 12s in! -
I like potato salad.
Me too - especially if it has garlic and bacon in it!
In that case bring the bass and treble down to just above zero on the instrument and boost each only slightly. You shouldn't need to run the EQ on the bass at full...
I don't run them on full, but I probably do use a bit more boost than you are suggesting - so yes, I will try that too! Having said that, it was much better last night with the new battery! Always try the easiest fix first!
If I was in an originals band that had aspirations of making it big would I be using the Compact? No way! Chances are it'd be a big Ashdown or Ampeg. Maybe Trace or Hartke or Peavey or Mark Bass or GK. Half of being professional is looking professional and those are manufacturers you see on big stages. A function band? Again, probably not. I'd want something a bit more elegant and sophisticated looking than my current rig. The clients would be expecting a professional appearance of a certain quality for their money. In that situation I'd happily trade that for the ease of movement of the rig as it wouldn't need to be moved so quickly or so far.
What an odd attitude towards gear! I've played in original bands, pub bands and function bands. I've played through big stacks made by Trace Elliot, Ashdown and Ampeg. I have never had anyone comment on my gear being or looking "unprofessional". Generally, your clients and audience know nothing about music gear and especially bass gear. There are several members on here who play in function bands and use BF gear. Of course, things could be different in your part of the world - but it's certainly not like that up here! The idea of people preferring enormous, heavy gear that actually sounds inferior is quite mind-boggling! As someone already said - nobody takes much notice of the bass player anyway!
Not a lefty are you? As I understand there's an Alleva-Copollo going cheap at the moment........
Ah, sadly I think you have misunderstood the great man's intentions. That particular bass is now legendary and will bear a price tag to reflect it's status.
I think it makes one difference, the amount of competition. There's a lot of people out there making fender clones afterall
Agreed. And they are exactly the companies that stand to benefit from this situation if potential buyers shy away from AC.
the money so far is on the Bergantino CN212 at 46lbs...unless I can be pursuaded otherwise. If the BF really is better, then perhaps I'll get that.
What would it take to "persuade" you? Surely you would would need to do a proper A vs B test with both cabs - which would involve either buying a Super 12 (with a view to returning it within a month if it didn't meet expectations) or borrowing one from someone. As BF cabs are not available in the shops... The Berg sells for £960 at Bass Direct. The cheapest BF option is the non-tweetered version with the black steel grille at £200 less. That is quite a difference! Maybe a fairer comparison would be the S12T at £870. Still enough cash left over to buy a few decent sets of strings. Although it could be argued that a difference of a hundred quid in cabs costing nearly a grand is relatively small... I have to say though, that purely from a cosmetic POV, the Berg wins hands-down! I ask purely out of interest.
I run my Spectors fairly hot but I've never had that problem. Reduce the preamp output using the internal trim pot back to 55% - 60% and it should be fine.
Ah yes, but mine doesn't have the internal trim pot!

What bass would serve best tonally as backup to acoustic guitar?
Alleva copollo has nothing to prove anymore as he managed to make one of the best "fender copy" Just leave the guy alone...
Bizarre If you had gone through the experience that this Addison guy appears to have suffered, would you want everyone to leave the alleged perpetrator alone? As for AC having nothing to prove, I beg to differ. He has to prove that this is a one-off aberration, maybe just a breakdown in communications, and not the start of a slide in standards. Many members on here aspire towards his basses and would probably like to be kept in the loop if it were thought that he was losing his touch. Don't you think? The fact that his basses are Fender clones is neither here nor there. It is to do with reputations and customer service. Surely people are entitled to comment on these things?

Bloody hell! Some people can turn anything into an argument!! The OP only offered us a choice of two - J or P!! Maybe it should have been posted as a poll? Once he has decided on the P bass, he can then decide on the type of strings to install. Defretting it is probably not an option as he will be borrowing it from a mate. Have some of you even read the OP?? -
I am looking at either a precision or a Jazz. What do you think would work best with what I've got & why that might be?

But in is post he's asking what sort of bass we think will fit.
Yes, he uses the term "bass", which can, of course, include keyboard bass. But when he asks us to help him decide between a Jazz and a Precision; I think we can safely assume that by "bass" he means "bass guitar". As many of us have already suggested, it is impossible to make a valid and absolute judgement with the limited amount of information we have. But a P would be better. -
Oddly all I see is folk discussing an event!
Me too. Of course, some people express themselves in rather odd ways... but then again that will happen down the pub, at work, on the terraces, on the High Street, etc as well. The fact that the luthier in question makes basses that the vast majority of us would never be able to afford or justify kind of gives the situation a certain amount of distance. People can slag JC off safe in the knowledge that they will never have to personally interact with him - therefore they have no personal stake in the debate. That makes it slightly different to criticising, say, Fender or even Barefaced. Some people just like an argument! Usually these people content themselves with bickering in off topic, but this time it has spilled over into the (usually) more sober gear forums... So it was never likely to end well!

How does one go about biasing valves?
-
I tend to run all basses through their more "appropriate" input channel - actives through the active channel, passives through the passive... and I've never had a problem, even with my 18V Status with full bass and treble boost. But my newest bass (to me, anyway!), the Spector, seems to cause distortion on the active channel There are a few things that could be causing this I guess, and the easiest fix is the one that I am about to go and do - put a new Duracell into the active preamp! But if that doesn't sort it, could it be that the output of this bass is just too hot for the preamp valve in my LH500? If so, would there be any value in changing it for a valve with more headroom (like the 5751 mentioned above)? Are Spectors known for having a particularly high output? I'm rehearsing tonight so will get a chance to see if the new battery solves the problem. I hope it does!

So who's going then? I plan to be there, so that's one. And I'm guessing WoT will be there too (or should I say "two")...
