Or would you prefer to deal with sellers who have a significant quantity of (written) feedback that other members have written relating to their experiences with the aforementioned seller? Although I have bought from and sold to noobs on here, I generally prefer to deal with those with a track record. YMMV of course. Is it really all that different to what you describe?

If flexibility/versatility is your goal, then a J with rounds will just about be able to do a passable impression of a flat-strung P (by selecting the neck pickup and rolling off the tone), but there is no way that a P with flats will ever be able to sound anything like a J! While a P bass is far from the "one-trick pony" that some make it out to be, it is not as versatile as a J due to the fact that is has only one pickup. There are MANY threads on here discussing the relative merits of the two bass types.... and of course lots of people who would never recommend a Fender type bass of any sort!! How long is a piece of string?

Personally, I'd go for a fretless P. The "woody" rich sound just seems to blend well with an acoustic guitar, but still cut through enough to make the bass part audible. Of course, not all acoustic guitars sound that same (and neither do all fretless Ps!), so maybe that doesn't narrow things down all that much after all!

I misread the OP as "8x10 combo"!! "That's a bit over the top" I thought...

However, it would seem that there is some "previous" between these two parties. At the very least it sounds as though Mr Addison approached Mr Coppollo in the past seeking employment or professional involvement of some description. As far as we know, there may be some historical bad blood between them.

It's difficult when you see someone of your acquaintance being pilloried in public. But to those people defending Mr Coppollo, how would you feel if you bought a bass from the for sale section on this website, and it arrived in this condition? Particularly if the seller more or less said "tough - it's your problem now mate!". It is also a bit strange that he has a "no refunds" policy, but then offers a refund. Much though I hate the "trial by internet", sometimes a situation such as this one brings valuable information into the public eye. It reveals a lot about both parties - but only as much as they allow us to see. It never represents the "full story". As such, we should be very careful in making judgements.

The wheels are great indoors and on smooth pavements - but admittedly they are rather crap on typical pub car parks! That said, they are bass cabinets not shopping trolleys! The handles thing is a bit of an issue - but if I could manage a Vintage (the biggest cab BF have ever made AFAIAA) in and out of a house with very narrow doors, then it shouldn't be too much of a problem with the new modular range, which are significantly less wide... Once a BF cab is set up on stage all the problems evaporate.

Barefaced midget with a separate micro amp? May be a bit over budget though...

Most people who buy BF cabs are aware of the perceived short-comings (e.g. issues with the paint/finish, corners working loose, handles being a bit naff...) but are prepared to put up with them because of the benefits (e.g. excellent transparent sound, huge volume capabilities, extreme lightness...). Even at this price point there are compromises to be made, but Alex has decided that the bulk of the cost goes on things that actually make a difference in the real world - i.e. top-notch drivers and well designed and made wooden boxes in which to house them and allow them to sing. If you don't like the BF products, that's cool - no one product suits everyone. But to make sweeping negative statements based on a minor wear problem with a few OWNERS' cabs (when you don't own one yourself) seems rather petty and childish.

Some people are very good at showing off their chops in front of others. I personally am not. When I warm up at a band rehearsal or play/practise at home I am pretty happy with what I can play. But for some reason, put me in a room with other bass players (even just one of them!) and I am suddenly bereft of ideas and can't think what to play!! I feel very self-conscious. If those other players were to judge my playing on that basis, then they would definitely put me in the "beginner" category!! I'm just not a natural show-off I guess!

So much depends on the amp you use and the settings you dial into it. Turn up the "bass" control and most cabs will struggle to provide you with much useful volume. You will also muddy up the overall sound and have problems hearing yourself. Reduce the bass and add more in the midrange and you will be able to go "louder". You will also be more audible and probably fit in better with your band's mix! That said - Behringer gear is not exactly what you might call "top-end". It can do a job if you don't ask too much of it, but if you want a cabinet (or more than one) that can handle high volume and give you a decent sound - you will almost certainly need to upgrade to something better (and, sadly, more expensive). Such is life.

Why do we always feel the need to pigeonhole and classify everything we do? When I joined this forum I thought I was a pretty decent player. Since then, I have seen and heard people (who are ordinary members on here) whose playing is WAY beyond my ability. Or so I thought. Then I go away and try to play what they just played and, after a few hours of noodling and trying different things, I can usually make a pretty passable attempt at it (apart from double-thumbing ). I think I am at the same level as the OP. No reading ability and only a very basic level of theoretical knowledge. I would like more, but with a full-time job and a family it is not top of my priorities list! I have played in a number of bands in hugely varied genres over the last 30 years, and have never been the weakest musician in any of them. I am respected not only as a player, but as a reliable contributor to every band I have been in. That's not me being smug - it is just the facts. I have a huge amount to learn, and look forward to the journey (if I can be arsed to make it!). I would put myself at the top of the "Intermediate" category, and and possibly just getting into "Good" on my day. But it all depends on with whom you are comparing yourself, doesn't it?
