1.
They take the Fender design and make them better.
Yes. Fender make good basses that are certainly fit for purpose - but there is a lot that can be (and has been) "improved upon". So why is it that so many players that have owned Sadowkys, Lulls, Alleva Coppolos and the like still come back to their old Fender Ps and Js? Another point for discussion...
 2. Just been listening to Selling England by the Pound... the section in Cinema Show featuring the keyboard solo is hairs on the back of the neck stuff. Brilliant!
 3.
Alex - are you alive?!?
Hopefully, he is busy making cabs and not wasting time on the internet like the rest of us!
 4. How much would you be able to get if you sold your Orange gear privately? The EBS cab retails at around £500, but would you get anywhere near that for your guitar stuff? If not, then the trade would be a good deal. But if you could get, say, £400, and could then browse the for sale section on here with that much cash in your pocket - you would have a lot more options. With your lack of transport, I would definitely recommend a used BF Compact. They do actually come up pretty often on here, but usually sell within minutes! There's one here - just to prove me wrong! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/213156-barefaced-midget-t-and-compact-for-sale/page__p__2159846__hl__compact__fromsearch__1#entry2159846 You could easily bring it back from London on the bus and/or train!
 5.
Not very up on all the types of fender jazz basses so I don't really know what makes this bass 'special.' hopefully someone on here would be kind enough to elaborate this point
To quote: "Fender American Special Jazz Bass is one of a new range of bass guitars for 2011. Fender American Special Jazz Bass, offers a host of stunning features coupled with what can only be described as awesome build quality. And the best bit about this particular bass guitar is that the American Special Jazz Bass delivers all of this at price that's just hard to believe! Fender American Special Jazz Bass features a slim neck profile, with a high-gloss finish plus the amazing Fender Greasebucket tone circuit, which rolls off highs while maintaining low-end definition. Other features include an alder body, the classic C-shaped maple neck with rosewood fretboard and medium jumbo frets, two single-coil alnico Jazz Bass pickups, vintage-style black plastic Jazz Bass knobs, 3-Ply Parchment pick-guard, vintage-style bridge and strap buttons. A deluxe gig bag rounds out the package and makes the Fender American Special Jazz Bass an instant classic." Except that this one clearly has a maple fretboard... They currently go for around £775 new, so it is not surprising that you didn't get much interest at £700! This seems a much better price.
 6.
Just been offered an ebs classic line 212 in a trade, what're people thoughts on that as a cab?
Not familiar with that particular cab - but EBS make some very good gear. A trade for what, if you don't mind me asking?
 7. Oh no! Another one of the greats leaves us A damned fine musician with a pretty unique style. Bugger.
 8.
Not sure I can think of a situation where 2 Compacts can be justified
Aaaw, I'm sure you could if you tried a little harder...
 9.
I just noticed this too: http://basschat.co.u...nd-412-s-cover/ Worth consideration... trully awesome cabs. And 4 x 12 plus around your budget...
Definitely! South London to Brighton has to be do-able... if he would only post it I think I would have made an offer myself!
 10.
I'll sell you a bargain 2x15
I hope you're not talking about the Vintage there Si... IMO, amp and cab combinations are extremely variable. Add to that the way that our ears all work differently and you have a real problem with strangers offering advice!! Give 'em a try and trust your own ears. £100 for a cab is a pretty good price on the face of it, but it depends on the cab. You should still give it a blast before buying, even at that price. If the sound (with your amp) doesn't please you, then it is money wasted if you buy it! It is definitely a buyer's market at the moment and there are some real bargains to be had - especially on here. Maybe instead of deciding on the speaker format you want (4x10, 2x15, etc), try looking within a certain budget and see what is around. You may find that a 2x12 (for example) comes up and you like it and can afford it. Try to be very selective when people start telling you that you need "tens for punch" or "fifteens for bottom" etc. Any decent cab with decent speakers in it should be able to give you the sound you require. And yes, if you are careful, £100 may be able to get you something worth owning - but only if you buy second hand. Where in Scotland are you? There are plenty of Basschatters in Scotland and Northern England (myself included) who would be happy to let you have a try of their gear to help you in the process of finding what you like...
 11.
Rotosound Swing Bass that was usually coated in a layer of chip fat , Reliced strings would need to be treated with the right kind of chip fat
Only beef dripping will do. None of your hydrogenated vegetable oils for me thanks.
 12. What was it about the "vintage" (how old was it?) J that you liked? By looking at a second-hand one on here you may be able to get closer than you think to your budget price.... Oops - I take that back. I see that you are already exploring that avenue! Good luck!
 13. What if it is a five string tuned E to C? What you mean is that you play a lot of stuff below low E, and you need a bass player who can play that. Which can be done on a down-tuned four string BTW...
 14.
There's a couple of people on a shortlist now...
Have you met any of them in the flesh? The steaks are high... Just out of interest, is there anything stopping someone just pretending to be a veggie to get the job?
 15. Price drop to £22 Any less than that and I'll hang on to them as a spare set
 16. Both pickups full-on is my favourite sound from a J bass (or equivalent). You can still make it sound good in a band context by judicious use of EQ, but, to be fair, it will never cut through as much as either pickup soloed. Such is life!
 17.
I would discount anything that is based on a Fender. If I want a bass made by a bass maker, I want one of their own designs. Seems reasonable.
Reasonable indeed...
 18. Brand new. Packaging unopened! These are surplus to requirements as I have now gone back to a slightly lighter gauge. These are real man's strings, with tone in bucketloads. Nice and bright, with a zing that lasts (which is not to everyone's taste, I realise!). They usually cost £30-33, so I think £25 posted anywhere in the UK is fair? I'm happy to post them outside the UK, but I may have to add a bit more to cover postage costs. PM me if you are interested. Happy to trade if anyone has a similarly unopened pack of 45-95s in Hi-Beam, Lo-Rider or Sun-Beam. Other brands considered, but with the appropriate cash adjustment.
 19.
I'm tempted by DR Nickel Lo Riders 40,60,80,100,120, but although they are lighter alot of people talk about them having higher tension than normal strings, which may not work for me...
Aren't Lo Riders supposed to have a rather higher tension/compliance than other DR sets? I'd go for Sunbeams myself... 20. It's a lovely dilemma to find yourself in! For me, I'm with Henry Ford.
