1. More importantly, who is that is your avatar pic? There is more funk in a J, and funk has mass. It's one of the lesser known laws of physics.
 2.
Go for the feel you like in a proper recording environment over the one off performance every time. Studio albums are a pice of work. Live albums are a souvenir.
That is what i was trying to say! Well said Dr Dave!
 3.
Take a look at this clip from Rockschool posted here a couple of days ago, particularly from the 13:30 mark
The section from 11.20 is even more relavant to this discussion! Some very cool comments from some real legends in there too, and I'd forgotten what a great player Henry Thomas was/is! Great closing theme tune.
 4. Both if possible... depends on the genre though I think. In livelier, rockier material I think it is better to make your recordings sound more live; but in jazzier or prog material - the added complexity of the recording makes for a very different experience for the listener. I prefer that. Depends on the band and the producer!
 5.
It's weird, although I like a fair bit of fusion stuff, this performance doesn't click with me at all. I have some of the RTF stuff with DiMeola on (like Romantic Warrior), and I think the strong compositions and sheer imagination of it make the whole thing work, and I've rarely felt that way about DiMeola solo. I don't mean to diss the performance, but I find it interesting to try and figure out what the thing I like is that's missing here. Maybe you had to be there.
Thanks for saying that. You just saved me five minutes of typing!
 6.
I still think its a load of bollocks that you can change your sound drastically by playing" differently"
Really? When other people play my bass (without changing any settings on the guitar or amp) they don't sound like me. The only variable is the "way" they play - so it must be affecting the tone/sound that comes out!
 7.
Mine: Sticking the drummer to the back wall at rehearsal last night with the thunderous noise coming from my trace v4 through my very recently acquired barefaced vintage, awesome!
You got one then! Great aren't they?
 8. What amazes me is that people would be surprised by this!
 9. Porcupine Tree - Deadwing
 10. This is nice... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2-GqYkwjTM As is this... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fgQFI-FxxnA
 11. What a great thread! It illustrates perfectly all the right and wrong reasons for modding/upgrading/customising a bass. Never do it to make money... it will cost you in the long run. How much it costs you depends on where you buy your parts, which is why Wilkinson is better than Schaller (for example) and that BC is better than buying new. The satisfaction of getting a bass that is yours and plays well for you is amazing!
 12. Another vote for Wizard here! With how many of those other companies can you talk to the guy that makes the pickups?
 13.
Will post pics soon
14.
so should be right up your street Conan!
I wondered where it had gone!
 15.
Yep email PJ Rubal at Spector - he's really helpful. Here's his address below "][email protected]
Cheers - will do!
 16. And now for something completely different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sD_azs_xVa8
 17. This is rather tasty IMO (starts at around 1.35) Progtastic...
 18.
If applause and a dancing crowd is all you want and will stoop to any level to get it , well, that is hardly art. Art is communication. Art can be entertaining.
Hmmmm.... we've been here before, haven't we?
 19.
How are getting on with it?
I am definitely "growing into it" Some great tones in there, and really easy to play! The neck still feels very long, but more practice will solve that. First full band rehearsal with it tomorrow night so will be able to put it through its paces properly then Still a bit confused over exactly which model it is though... with the presence of the walnut layer but the absence of the tonepump trim pot! Never mind, its a great bass whatever it is!
 20.
http://www.classican...lguitars.co.uk/
Eeek! There is a fake version of a well-known "hand-made" US bass guitar on that site!!! Seriously, could we further anger Mr Hall with that link? Guilt by association or something?? Edit - Sorry, just spotted Nige's post above Still, it's a nice one isn't it?
 21.
hell you can even get a Midget with a horn these days.
Thanks for that image.
 22.
....makes 5000 teen age girls scream...
I'm a teacher. It comes with the territory
 23.
Wrote the post on train on way to work and have no pixs to hand
That's a pretty poor excuse man! Having recently bought a used Euro 4, I would be very interested to hear what you think of the Legend. Which reminds me, I must get some pics taken of mine too...
 24.
i knew after I joined this place I'd never be happy with just one bass...
Ha ha! That's just the tip of the iceberg mate! Back OT - that's a lovely looking J Dave. For me the only improvement would be a 70s style neck with pearl blocks... which would stop it being a 60s "classic" of course...
 25. It was a good programme. Watched the second half last night, which was less interesting mainly because I already was familiar with their later story. Yes, Frey did come across as a bit of a tw@t, but then again is it really all that surprising that a band with 4/5 members has a leader of some description? Some of their ex and current members did appear to have a lot of bitterness and issues too - which is a shame as the sweet vocal harmonies kind of imply that all was sweetness and harmony in the band too...! They did produce a lot of mediocre MOR musical wallpaper, but when they got it right - wow!
