1.
That's my point. I've never actually heard of a truly transparent pickup.
Some are more 'transparent' than others, but I agree. Then again I am no expert!
  2.
what's the difference in a single coil and soapbar though?
They are the same thing, electronically - but the housings are different shapes. Imagine what a Les Paul would look like with two Strat-style SC pickups? It's just what people are used to seeing. Its a bit like putting the same engine into two different cars, maybe. Does the same thing, but looks different. Personally, I prefer the look of soapbars - but in guitars that have always had SCs in single casings, they look wrong IMO. A Jazz bass with soapbars? Yuk.
  3.
But what is a transparent pickup? It seems like a pretty illusive thing.
A pickup that does not introduce its own character to the sound. Although I would have thought that most pickups do this, as the acoustic sound is very different to the transduced and amplified sound. To test this, try holding a microphone up to a vibrating bass string. Is that really the sound that you would want?
  4. I'd say £100 a gig was pretty good - especially as you haven't had to pay into the PA, rehearsals or any other costs. But it depends on the band of course. If you hate the material and only do it for the dosh, then a ton might not cover your umbrage. If you like the band and the material, I'd just keep schtum and take the cash.
  5. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-QbJ0Ga8hFc That 'Wick sounds more like a Rick than most Ricks I've heard!! Nailed the tone totally man!
  6.
Basically what I'm asking is is it safe to use these together, and will I be getting the most out of the head putting it through that cab?
Safe? Definitely. Sound-wise? Surely only your ears can decide that. All the technical information in the world only helps some of the people some of the time. If your ears tell you that it sounds good, then, for you, it probably does. Of course, if you understand the tech stuff, you might actually see the truth in it and decide to take notice of it. Not everyone does of course, but it had certainly helped me refine my tone from what it was a few years ago when all I cared about was if i could hear myself...
  7.
Then you must hate music and have no personality or musicality mate. Are you dead from the neck up, or down? Or both?
Ah. You've seen me play then...?
  8. Nope, not really. A quick wipe down with a moist E-cloth when changing strings is about it for me.
  9.
Rush are crap, dead down and up, no surprises, totally predicatable, no musicality or personality.
I knew there had to be a reason why I have loved them these last 35 years!! My kind of band!
  10.
You can watch 30 mins of the show and know every move they would make..and there would be no musical surprises.
I would be interested to know how you personally would be playing your own songs 30-40 years after you had written them? After having played them live thousands of times over the years in front of millions of fans who all expect you to be note-perfect? Horses for courses, naturally - but Rush fans are generally extremely demanding in terms of how they expect the band's songs to be played. Is there an element of jealousy here?
  11.
I think youre mistaking me for someone who give a monkeys toss what you think about them.
Classic! I wish I'd written that!! If I say it know, it would be a cover version - so I'd have to put my own personality into it or it would just be "saying by numbers" (whatever the f*** that means!?)
  12. Would now be the appropriate time to mention the Barefaced Super 12?
  13. Fancy a trade? http://basschat.co.uk/topic/207586-yamaha-emp100-multi-effects-processor/
  14.
my website is now up: www.soyouthinkyoucanplaybass.com Thank you all for your feedback, I look forward to hearing from you.
I agree with what others have said - that is not a good name for a teaching or instructional resource. Far too confrontational, and likely to put potential visitors off IMO. But hey - it's your project man!
  15. You have PM Mr Discreet!
  16. If this is still here when the payment comes through for my Rush tickets (hopefully later tonight or tomorrow), I'll have it!
  17.
I've personally lost count of the times I've had to complain about being denied the opportunity to pay some more tax, when importing strings from US
18. Does it do the usual chorus, flanger, phaser stuff as well or is it basically an amp modeller with a few bells and whistles?
  19. Hi all. As the title implies, I have a Yamaha EMP100 multi-effects processor. I have had it from new, which was about 20 years or so ago. I've fiddled about with it on numerous occasions but I just don't really use effects so I am planning to sell it on (if it is worth anything). A google search has not been very revealing, with a few for sale at prices ranging from £15 to £300!! They seem to be pretty well regarded, but there are not many around now so I have no idea of its second-hand value. It is in good condition, but I no longer have the original box. The instruction booklet is around somewhere though... Can anyone give me any advice on what this device might be worth and is anyone interested in it? I understand they are very effective when used with accordions... http://www.scotlanda...%20EMP-100.html Thanks in advance!

Speculative bump... I hope I haven't contravened the 36 month bumping rule...
  21.
Don't let the details get in the way of a good thread Conan ;-)
I try not to
  22.
Rubbish. He like the strings and nothing compares to them. Just pay the money and get what you want rather than compromising.
Hmmmm. Except that the OP clearly stated that at least one of the alternatives (LaBella) were more expensive than his brand of choice!
  23.
Matter, generally is a substance (often a particle) that has rest mass and (usually) also volume. The volume is determined by the three-dimensional space it occupies, while the mass is defined by the usual ways that mass is measured. Matter is also a general term for the substance that makes up all observable physical objects.
Well, yeah - if you're going to put it like that....
  24.
PM'd
Replied. Two minutes!!! On hold.
