1.
Didn't know that, Edinburgh rumour was they were all Jambo's. His mum & dad used to run a nearby garage/filling station.
The garage was in Dalkieth. And the Jambo thing is massively ironic as Fish is a huge Hibs fan!
 2.
They got a lot of stick for being a Scottish Genesis but I never saw it myself.
Yeah, I never got that. Fish was the only Scot in the band! And he joined them down in Aylesbury, where they were based for years... On the bread thing... 3.
Pete T. isn't as deep in the pocket as I'd like, but ... everyone else is just SO relaxed and together. I love it.
Well, they have been playing that track for thirty years now, so they bloody well should be relaxed and together! Ian Mosely is a decent drummer, and certainly streets ahead of Mick "the kitchen" Pointer... But I personally think that Marillion lost any kudos and edge when Fish left. His solo material is so much more interesting than anything they have done since Season's End. I prefer Pete T's work with Transatlantic. Much tighter and better "pocket" playing (if such a thing exists in any kind of "prog" related music!). 4.
I'm quite partial to this little number...
Nice. But not, maybe, as nice as this one (when it comes to "sublimeness"?)
 5. What frustrates me more is the way that the mundane things in life impinge on the time that I have to play and enjoy music. One of the problems of being "middle aged" (as I found out that I was yesterday...) is that you have wider responsibilities than simply indulging yourself (ambiguity partly intended!). My job in particular seems to be taking more out of me than it ever did before. When I get home I just want to cook a nice meal, drink lots of beer/wine/whisky, watch a bit of TV.... and by that time I'm usually asleep on the sofa. Christ, I'm boring myself now!
 6.
Simplicity is not aesthetic justification in itself : simple music and economic playing by musicians is just as apt to be rubbish as complicated music and highly technical playing .
True. I said "simple is good" though, not "simple is best"
 7. Is he performing music or are you just meeting him for a pint?
 8.
Techinical stuff on the instrument you play is useful for learning. If musicality is the thing you are learning, you can learn it from any instrument.
Yes... but you still have to have the technical ability to be able to play the "musical" stuff that you hear in your learned head
 9.
Superb post mate.
10.
This to me is one of the most beautiful songs ever:
Lovely! But I'm biased coz I like Mogwai...
 11. Is it safe to have this discussion? Is Inti/Antelope anywhere withing hearing distance...? Simple is good. But often it seems that we have to go through some kind of "life cycle" as a musician. You start off crap (obviously), but through practise and dedication start to get quite good. Some people stop there and are quite happy. Others aspire to more, so they practise harder and longer. Maybe learn theory. Maybe have lessons. They start to get seriously good, and start to demonstrate their expertise by playing all over the music that they play.... Some people are impressed... Then comes the "economy" stage. You know where the notes are, and how to play them. You may well have a commanding knowledge of technique and are skilled in various styles.... BUT (and that's a big but) you choose not to play them all the time! You are now a tasteful player and are a far more valuable commodity to bands and other musicians. For that reason, never judge a player by what they play. You have no idea what they can play!
 12.
Got tickets for the Glasgow show but don't know whether I like them enough to go or whether just to sell the tickets on
They haven't sold out yet, so I doubt you'll make much of a profit on them!
 13.
A lot of the 'high numbers' posters seem to fall into one of two categories. 1. Middle-aged men who take themselves very seriously. 2. Middle-aged men who think they are comedians.
Eeek! Thanks for that reality check man.... I certainly don't take myself very seriously, but nor do I think I am a comedian... do I have a high post score? I'm confused now. And depressed. Am I really "middle aged"? Christ - I am! How did that happen?
 14. Well that was a nice short thread...
 15.
What an awful shame
Nothing more to add
 16.
his note choices are beautiful, his phrasing, his timing ...
And his tone! That is the tone I have in my head when I think about a P bass. Hold the front page - "Musician with questionable personality! shock!!
 17.
I wouldn't say that Status are neutral... they defo have a certain character, a hardness to the tone if you like.
Not sure I'd use the term "hardness" (although you might mean something different to what I think you mean!) but certainly my Status is anything but neutral. In fact, several band members have said they prefer the tone of my Jazz as it sounds more "smooth" or "mellow" than the Status, which has been described as "harsh" and "growly"!! I myself have always thought it sounded warm and clear! Just shows how we all use words differently and hear sounds in different ways.
 18.
Just done one of them showcase gigs in a student bar in town with my fledgling originals band, to a handful of interested people, for no money.
Ah... that brings back memories! Which bar was it?
 19.
But then, I'm probably in an originals band that is somewhat more democratic than the norm.
Me too! Great, isn't it?
 20.
Dozens of threads on this woman every year, on all the bass forums, with all the participants making more or less the same comments every time and everyone doing their best to point out the bleeding obvious.
Well pardon us for daring to have an opinion on something!
 21.
Paul Rose/Prose bass/Funn bass was focusing on making small light short scale basses at the end - not expensive either.

I used to have a fanned fret shortscale made by prosebass originally. It was teeny yet sounded immense due to the pickups in it, maybe fanned fret would help you ? Wasn't all that expensive
I was going to suggest Prose/Funn bass too. It seems that he is no longer making basses (he is a member on here too) but a few of his (rather funky) creations have come up on here second hand. Prices are very reasonable. http://funnbass.wordpress.com/ Otherwise, I was going to suggest a Fender Geddy Lee J bass. Not heavy (IMO), great slim neck, easy to get a low action, and still capable of a range of great sounds. Easy to pick one up second hand for around £450-500 too.
 22.
I can't ever imagine wanting to be in a covers band.

I think you are creating your own problem, who's said anything like that?
Er.... well, I thought you did - but on re-reading all 7 pages, I have to concede that you didn't. So.... I might well be guilty of what you say. Bollocks. Why would I think that? I must be getting confused...
 23.
I'd never knock or claim to not understand someone wanting to do covers.
I think that is the issue. It's not that people openly condemn those who play covers, it's more of a kind of incredulity that they would even consider such an unbelievable position!
