1.
I would say these are nothing like a Geddy Lee bass. The pickups are in the wrong place for a Geddy (and the wrong kind) the neck will be fatter than a Geddy one too. Definitely fanboy stuff given the pricetag... it's just a VM'77 with some stickers on. They are good basses for the money (usual money not this one) but nothing like a Geddy.
Exactly. That being the case, is someone (Rush and/or Fender) trying to pull a fast one here?
  2.
I haven't tried myself, but I'm told delivery of these is restricted to North America.
Yeah. I've just tried ordering one (just to see if it would work!) and it didn't. However, it is possible to use third party companies as US shipping addresses and they then post stuff on to the rest of the world, so it would be possible to get one if you were determined... Just seems an odd thing to sell in a band's merchandise store!
  3. Just spotted this on the Rush website. Has anyone tried one of these? Are they meant to be similar to the "proper" Fender GL J bass? http://www.rushbackstage.com/rushbackstage/accessories-etc/rush-fender-squier-clockwork-angels-bass.html Opinions?
  4.
Is it just me or is it like a disease when you go on the forum in the "For Sale" sections and start foaming at the mouth?
No, that's a fairly normal reaction!
I really cant understand why anybody in their right mind would want to 'F' about with the electronics of a Geddy Lee Jazz. Just why would you ? If its modded then it isnt worth as much as a standard model - and if you should wish to pass on in the future then you should be aware of that, and be prepared to either struggle to sell it or get less for it.
Well, mine had been modded when I bought it, so the decision wasn't mine. But personally I don't see the problem in trying something different. If you've bought it, its your bass and you can do what you like to it. I actually like the sound of my Geddy with the EMGs. To my mind, the GL is simply a very good quality Fender J bass. It is very playable and has a lovely neck. There is no need to leave it exactly as it is unless you are some sort of sad Geddy clone. And don't forget, Lee himself doesn't play one of those basses, but a series of Custom Shop variations...
Me neither! My standard Geddy pickups are hot!!
I wouldn't know...
It does not sit too well on the lap
It does if you play with a kind of "classical guitar" position, with the bass between your legs (as it were...).

I had a five string version and it was a decent bass. I just found it slightly "polite" for my tastes. Not so much soundwise, but I just couldn't set the action quite high enough to allow me to dig in a bit.... Good value if you can pick up a second-hand one and they have quite a useable range of tones. The twin-pickup version would be more versatile though....
  7.
But you can always rely on the legions of slap monsters! They never fail to show! Lol!
Cue David Attenborough voice.... Yes. As their natural habitat (the jazz-funk band) has been continually eroded, these creatures have adapted to a new environment where their cryptic colouration and elusive behaviour blends in well. Beautiful, aren't they?
2 together sounds five times better than 1.
More is more.
  9.
This photo was taken by The Greek at the LBGS last weekend. Take a look at the Ritter in the top row...
The Ritters somehow contrive to make the Foderas next to them look conservative and cheap!
  10. Some of his neck joints look like potential weak points though....
  11. I love the look of pretty much all of his designs and finishes, but how do they play? I think that if I could afford to buy one then I wouldn't be too bothered about dings and things. I'm not that bothered about them anyway, certainly after the first one! Actually you know, thinking about what else you can get for five grand (a reasonable second-hand car, a decent holiday for a family of five, a modest extension to your house...) suddenly the price of a Ritter doesn't seem too bad!
  12. That's a shame. A great player and a really nice genuine guy
  13.
Be bloody thankful you have a passion that you're involved with. A great many people were never even given the opportunity to find out what their passions and natural aptitudes are
What a great post!! Love it
  14.
There is a particular piss-taker on here who has annoyed me in the past with his dodgy dealing and who still irks me with his regularly posting of many more items for sale than any normal bass player would do.
Chill out man! Life's too short to get your knickers in a twist about what other people do. If it really bothers you that much, report him to the mods. In what way is his dealing "dodgy" BTW?
  15.
What makes it so light? Custom speakers, special casing material? Both?
Not "custom" speakers, just very high quality Eminence Neodymium drivers (which are light). Thin but strong wood with lots of bracing and strengthening. The Vintage is no longer made, but the Barefaced ethos is best taken from the horse's mouth (as it were)... http://barefacedbass.com/ Not that I am calling Alex a horse, of course (of course!).
  16.
Sorry Conan but I'm all sorted cab-wise! Cash only I'm afraid.
No worries mate. It was a speculative offer at best, and I don't really want rid of my Vintage. But if I did, this would be the only cab I would be interested in! Good luck!
  17.
The Fender Rumble and GK are both offered new at about £350 and thats pretty much my budget. Second Hand would be good but I live in Spain and don't fancy lugging one on a plane and the courier cost for a heavy item would be silly.
Good point. While there are a few members on here from Spain and Portugal, the chances of them having amplification for sale at just the time that you need it is small.
  18.
this is a passive bass and whoever put these pickups in did not rout a battery cavity,
Have you checked that there isn't a (flat) battery lurking in the control cavity under the bell plate? That's where mine used to be...
  19.
Offers will be listened to for Hillman Avenger in brown with vinyl roof - 10 days MOT and 2 weeks Tax.
If only it had been black, I would have been all over that...
  20.
The difference between 'made' and 'crafted' is probably just a matter of perceived value, i.e., craftsman vs. factory worker.
Yes. Much like the "farm fresh" eggs laid by beakless battery hens in wire cages in darkened aircraft hangars... The devil is in the detail.
  21. There is usually quite a lot of old Trace Elliot stuff around in the second hand market. Always a good deal and plenty of "bang for your buck". Heavy though, but you can't have everything at that price! Combos with any sort of usable power can be very heavy, so maybe consider separates? That way you can always upgrade them separately when need arises... Something like this: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/198399-fs-trace-elliot-1518-cab-l150/page__p__1992188__hl__trace%20elliot__fromsearch__1#entry1992188 perhaps?
  22. Oh! I always fancied one of these! Don't suppose you would be interested in a trade (with cash adjustment) for my BF Vintage?
  23. Ooooohhhh.... I wonder how two Vintages would sound...
  24.
There were two types of Reflex pickups - Reds and Blues. The Blues were a bit milder but the Reds, when working properly, were definitely not quiet. Check which ones you've got in there and also check that the battery they need to power up the preamp circuit is healthy before you decide to change.
Great advice as usual!
