Its not, there have already been a few posts discussing what fast means
Yes. Thank you for the sarcasm, but I realise that. I was hoping that one of the people who do equate fast and thin might post, explaining why they made that link...

Why is it always assumed that "thin = fast"?
The Geddy today is the equivalent of the original early 70's 4 bolt Jazz neck.
Even slimmer than that apparently. Geddy had his sanded down to his own spec and the GL signature basses are modelled on that - or at least the original ones were...
didn't Mark King play on something?
Yup. MK played bass on the track "Easy" from the Riddle album. A slight change of direction maybe, but Nik sang guest vocals on this track too... (Bass played by our very own JD1)

Even when he plays a P bass he sounds like himself...
What I'm looking for..... is nice mellow, smooth mids for playing lead bass melodies in the more ballad anthemic songs. If it can do crisp highs it would be a bonus but not essential.

I'd be inclined to say Barefaced.

2x Barefaced Compact. Ultra light to carry and will surely handle all the power you can throw at them!
Compacts are great cabs, as are all the BFBs I've tried... but I'm not so sure that they do "nice mellow, smooth mids". I tend to find the mids very assertive and even a bit "shouty", so you need to be very careful with EQ. Still, it is nice to have all those mids available if you need them!

How was your transition from 4 string to 5??
Conan replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
Amen to that, i seen a cover band a while back and later they returned and the bassist had gotten himself a 5 string Cheap Fender and he was using the low B too much in my opinion just cos it was there. It was getting used in songs that didnt suit the low timbre!
I firmly believe this to be the case in some bands and genres. The extra low notes just don't "work". They just don't sit right with the rest of the instruments. I'm in a band like that at the moment, which is probably the main reason why I see no reason to put the effort into adapting to a five. If I join a rock band, or if the singer starts needing to drop keys to below E, then I might reconsider... -

Timing is also a factor. A bass player who cannot keep time is as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. -
I am in love with the bass line from La femme d'argent- By Air I just think that is such a sublime piece of music, the bass line drifts & bounces along like a spring lamb but lighter than the breeze it plays with, it sets a stunning back drop & makes the track something more.
Yes!! Good call fumps! That is (to me) a great piece of bass playing. I wish i could have written that. Simple but beautiful and totally in context. The technical ability of the bass player in question is immaterial when they play something as pleasing as that line. -
Never trust bass players defending "less notes" just because they arn't able to do something else. A good musician is not limited in any way. Then and then only you may trust his playing to be what he really is and not his limitations speaking through him, trying to fool other limited musicians.
Uh-oh. This sounds eerily familiar... Sorry, but many "good musicians" are limited in many ways. Are you implying that to qualify as a "good musician" you must be totally flawless in every possible skill related to music?? How on earth does that work? What is your experience in the music "business" may I ask? How many musicians that you have worked with are "good" by your definition? Everyone's opinion varies of course, but to me, bass guitar is an instrument that belongs in a band context. That's not to say that I can't enjoy/appreciate the odd piece of Wooten-esque solo playing; but I just prefer to hear a bass played sensitively in a band. In that case, I think a "good" bass player is one whose playing works within the context of that band and actually adds something to the songs. Maybe this is an old-fashioned view, but it works for me. -

How was your transition from 4 string to 5??
Conan replied to TheGreek's topic in General Discussion
I've tried it three times now, and on each occasion it has produced the same result - a five string bass in the for sale section That said, I've never tried one of such quality as the one the OP has the good fortune to own. Maybe that is the reason? The problem is that all my favourite basses have four strings, so any fiver that I was to stick with would have to be pretty bloody exceptional-and I'm yet to play one like that that I could afford... I know that isn't what you want to hear though, so I'll stop there. -
As we exist purely for the entertainment of whores, maybe a "dildo" of bassists would be appropriate? Or as we are also clowns, maybe a "circus" of bass players? I'm sure Inti could come up with a few pithy suggestions...
