Would a 2x15 beef my sound up?
What exactly do you feel is missing from your sound with the 8x10? Is it something that could be added by judicious use of EQ? Is it a sealed or ported cab?
laughable post.... can't begin to...well, I can't stop laughing....
Why's that? You keep telling us that your opinion, built up over years of experience, is valid - so why shouldn't anyone else's be, even if you disagree with it?

My dad's harder than your dad. And he's an entertainer...
Mr F - looks like a Bond villan, lives in a secret lair built into a mountain and is looking to hold the world to ransom with his sonic destructor ray!
And is secretly stockpiling Neodymium in order to hold the Chinese to ransom...
I currently an orange AD200 through an 8x10 Would a 2x15 beef my sound up?
Yes. Especially if you run both at the same time.
I'm sure the barefaced fans will be along shortly!Dan
You called?! *Compact*!! Small, light, very loud, raunchy tone (if you want it).... what's not to like?

Well, I've just finished reading this entire thread, and one thing has become clear to me. There ain't half some twats on this forum!

Since getting my Vintage (no longer made, but kind of replaced by the Super Fifteen) I have hardly even thought about speaker cabinets. They are a real GAS cure! On the rare occasions when I have looked at other cabs, they have all been BFB ones. I am no sycophantic fanboy - but for me the combination of tone, portability (despite choosing the biggest cab they ever made!!) volume and looks mean that I don't want or need anything else, and am unlikely to in the future. The range is quite large now, and with the modular capabilities there really should be a combination that will deliver the sound you want. Contact Alex for the best advice!

I love purple. No, I really love purple!! I would love to get my Geddy Lee J refinished in a rich solid purple colour, but it is expensive as nobody seems to hold stocks of the paint! I remember a beautiful purple PJ bass changed hands on here a couple of years ago... I seem to recall that it was Zoe (Billy Sheehan) that got it... I was dead jealous!!

As a 30 year veteran of the Newcastle music scene, I have never encountered this attitude at the audition phase. You might get the odd snidey comment once you have been in a band a while and people know you, but that is more of a personal dig than a comment on the instrument itself! I think you have just been unlucky.
For me..and I think I have played around with a lot.... That is what I want from a cab...
Spot on! There really is no argument against that. If someone has taken the time, expense and effort to try lots of different speaker sizes, styles and combinations; and the result is pleasing to their ears - then nobody should tell them that they are wrong. It's all about knowing your own needs and what satisfies them best. Both of these bits of knowledge only come about through years of experimentation (and lots of spending!). The problems arise when inexperienced bassists ask the unanswerable questions like "What amp/cab/guitar/strings/etc do you recommend?" and every experienced bassist chimes in with their own answer.... Still - it keeps forums interesting!
had another practice with it and it's huge enough on its own.
Aha! So you are "Johnny the Dep"?!?!
FWIW, I've always thought 115 a useless cab for bass
Interesting! When I had my old TE stack, I far preferred the sound from the 1518 than the 1048!! I liked 15s - but that was before I discovered properly made cabs, in which the size of the speaker is only one of the variables, and even then not the most important one!
-
I'm also interested in this. Something fairly cheap would be a bonus!
To mix a compact with a "cheap" cab would seem to be rather self-defeating...
if one cab isn't enough, use two of the same model. The results with any other combination, even with another BFB model, are unpredictable at best.
I thought that the BFB cabs were designed to be modular and that different combinations would work well together to produce different (but good) sounds? If the OP likes the sound of a compact but wants a "bigger" sound, then a second compact would seem to be the best option. Picking one up second hand would save a few quid too (good luck with that!). That said, I have heard extremely favourable comments about the compact/midget combination...
I'm a learner bass player, playing mostly metal with a touch of acoustic, rock & country thrown in Lite 40 | 60 | 80 | 100 Medium 45 | 65 | 85 | 105 Heavy 50 | 70 | 90 | 110
That's quite an eclectic mix of styles! Bear in mind that what they are calling "lite" gauge there is not the lightest set of strings you can get. They go down as far as 30-90, so in effect 40-100 represents almost the middle of the range... Generally speaking, a heavier gauge gives more tone and volume but can be a bit heavier on the fingers - especially if they are stainless steel roundwounds. And if you plan your practice carefully then your fingertips will harden and callous without the "need" to go through the blister stage!

Add in just a smidgin of talent and charisma.... not sure the strings were a huge part of his overall tone.Still, it's nice to know these things

In certain respects I am a very "old school" bass player. The thought of "less bass" seems counter-intuitive to me. Think I'll leave things the way they are!
There's a certain 'oomph' that is neither volume nor sound quality that you only get from a big rig,
Maybe that's just down to the number of speakers? For nearly 20 years I played through the "typical" Trace stack - AH250, 1518 and 1048... loud as hell but as heavy as one of Jupiter's moons! I arrived at my current set-up via Ampeg and Ashdown and can honestly say that my sound now is as big, clear and bassy as anything I have had before. To be fair, I have never tried any of the "boutique" gear that others have - but I know how I want to sound in a band and my BF Vintage gives me that sound. Sounds crap in the house though... but that's a separate issue!
Personally I would never use an PA amp of any decent power as a bass amp without a subsonic filter into any speaker I cared about ....
I'm confused. Does a pre-amp specifically for bass not include this subsonic filter of which you speak? Can the power amp somehow add back frequencies which the preamp has not "fed" to it?
The Barefaced vintage has this option for that purpose.
I've always fancied having a play around with this... there are three (what appear to be) equal sized ports in the front - what effect might I get if I block one or more of them?
