That said, I have heard extremely favourable comments about the compact/midget combination...

Bear in mind that what they are calling "lite" gauge there is not the lightest set of strings you can get. They go down as far as 30-90, so in effect 40-100 represents almost the middle of the range... Generally speaking, a heavier gauge gives more tone and volume but can be a bit heavier on the fingers - especially if they are stainless steel roundwounds. And if you plan your practice carefully then your fingertips will harden and callous without the "need" to go through the blister stage!

Add in just a smidgin of talent and charisma.... not sure the strings were a huge part of his overall tone.Still, it's nice to know these things

In certain respects I am a very "old school" bass player. The thought of "less bass" seems counter-intuitive to me. Think I'll leave things the way they are!

For nearly 20 years I played through the "typical" Trace stack - AH250, 1518 and 1048... loud as hell but as heavy as one of Jupiter's moons! I arrived at my current set-up via Ampeg and Ashdown and can honestly say that my sound now is as big, clear and bassy as anything I have had before. To be fair, I have never tried any of the "boutique" gear that others have - but I know how I want to sound in a band and my BF Vintage gives me that sound. Sounds crap in the house though... but that's a separate issue!
