1.
I think that the John Martyn vibe would have been different without Danny Thompson
Absolutely! Although he has a very different "vibe" with John Giblin. And doesn't Alan Thompson sound uncannily like Giblin?!
 2.
cheers
3.
The guy is in his late 40s and says when he arrives this guitar is for his son's birthday...literally about a week later I see the same guitar advertised for a chunk more than I sold it for. No birthday noy I guess :/ And then the 12 year old starts counting money... and I took away a large chunk off the price I was asking. The look on his face was well worth it.
Great post! The highs and lows of selling gear! That guy's attitude really annoys me though. I do have a (now 15 year old) son and I have bought a few things for him recently. He is a bit shy so he normally asks me to do the dealing for him. Not that I drive a hard bargain or anything, he just feels awkward doing it!. I don't mention that the item is for him so that I can get a better deal, just so that I am entering into the deal from a position of honesty. Particularly as it is guitar gear and I know naff all about it!! Wherever possible I take him with me so that he can try the gear himself. However, two weeks ago I did take him to buy a Boss distortion pedal which was advertised at £50. I gave my son £40 in cash before we went in and the guy accepted this rather surreptitious form of haggling...! There was no pressure though and I had the other tenner in my pocket in case he didn't want to shift on his advertised price. All good fun!
 4.
In my opinion the OP should get on with playing bass and stop thinking about amplification until it becomes a limiting factor.
Most sensible comment in this entire thread!
 5.
Let's say you have a amp running 500W @ 4Ohms and about 300W @ 8 Ohms. In terms of power handling a 8Ohm cab will only put out 300W and a 4Ohm one will put out 500W
It's amps that "put out power" - not cabs. The power that the amp puts out depends on the impedance of the speaker cabinet, and even that is not the same at all frequencies! The "wattage" value on a cabinet is the power load that it is supposed to be able to handle before sustaining damage. It's fairly well known that most cab manufacturers are fairly inaccurate with these ratings. Again though, it will depend on the use of the EQ. If you run a very bass-heavy sound you may damage the speakers in a cab way before reaching it's supposed power rating...
 6. This deal would certainly take a lot of beating... http://www.gak.co.uk/en/genz-benz-gb-210t-xb2/76743

 8.
Not everyone's up for a bit of wheeling and dealing, not everyone is comfortable with it. OK, maybe I'm a bit of a control freak, but I'm not an ogre, I'm not an unreasonable person, nor am I difficult to deal with, as my feedback thread will attest to. I've clearly managed to sell stuff using this approach at mutually agreeable prices.
Absolutely! I don't think anyone is disagreeing with you - just stating why they find your position strange. If I saw an item that I was a bit interested in, that had been for sale for several months and had no real interest, I don't see the problem with making what I regard as a sensible offer. After all, there is probably a reason why it has attracted so little attention! People sell things for different reasons. Some people are just happy to get shot of something and will often sell for less than their originally advertised price. Others are selling to make money on an item that they bought as an investment, so obviously they will be less keen to sell at a lower price. Horses for courses. If someone clearly stated on their thread that they were looking for a firm price with no haggling, I would either pay them the asking price or walk on by. But surely as a seller you would accept a few quid less than your asking price rather than not make a sale at all? That just seems sensible to me... but everyone is different. I usually end up selling stuff for less than my original asking price, but that's my choice.
 9.
Being able to get you to do that is why they are able to do the second bit.
Yeah - nobody gets to stay rich by throwing their money around!
 10.
Ped and Steve cannot be expected to run the site at a personal loss simply for our benefit. Because the logical outcome... is that they go broke and there's no site upon which to advertise, at which point we'd all be royally f***ed up the fundamental.
This.
I can't think of anything that costs so little yet delivers such a wide, and directly relevant, target audience. I'd gladly pay a bit more to get things up and running with a solid base for future development
Oh and this as well. I read with incredulity yesterday that there are people who have sold stuff on here (or even just advertised stuff) but have never made a donation. I might not donate after every item sold (a set of strings for example) but whenever I sell something with a value of greater than £100 or so I reach for the "donate" button. I can't believe that some people don't! That is just taking advantage of a (currently) free service!!
 11.
I really detest lowballers. When I sell my stuff I always put "FIRM" No haggling etc I think it is personally disrepectful to lowball
You are entitled to this view of course, but there will be times when it makes selling more difficult for you as there will be others selling similar items that are prepared to enter into a polite and civilised negotiation. Or you can call it haggling. It amounts to the same thing. Once again, it comes down to the definition of a "lowball" offer. I personally would say that it is anything that is 50% or less than the advertised price, although this might vary on very expensive items and whether you think the seller has done their homework properly. For example, if someone was selling a Wal bass at £10,000 I don't think it would be lowballing to offer £5,000 - unless that particular instrument actually was worth ten grand...
 12. Yeah, as suggested above. The G string is .52 in that set isn't it? That a big meaty string when most people are using .40-.45 gauge. Maybe just too much outward pressure on the nut. If you are going to continue using those strings it might be worth a small amout of filing to slightly increase the size of the slot in the nut (when you get a new one, of course!).
 13. DR Sunbeams? I tried a lot of string brands, but once I tried DR I have been happy. Pricey, yes - but they do seem to last a long time and have a good tone. Worth a try IMO.
 14.
I did look to the swing bass stings. I heard that they wmeat up your fingerboard quite a bit. Do you know if thats the case?
Not sure what you mean by "wmeat"... But yes, rounds will cause finger board damage over time. How much damage and how much time depends on several factors like how hard you fret, the type of strings (nickel are softer than steel) and the wood that the board is made from. Fortunately, in your case, ebony is one of the hardest woods. So if you go down the roundwound route you will have less bother than someone with a rosewood board - especially if you choose nickel strings like DR sunbeams.
 15. I have Wizard Hammers in my J fretless. It's not a Fender, but it's a well-made copy and it sounds and plays great. Despite being a lifelong devotee of roundwound strings, I have LaBella flats on this bass - 49-109, which interestingly they call medium gauge!! Lovely full, warm but punchy tone. Good sustain and nice to play. Highly recommended!
 16. Most of the bands I've been in, if the singer spat at the drummer there would have been an unconscious singer lying on the stage three seconds later!
 17. As this thread demonstrates, most of us are pretty reasonable and fair
 18.
if anyone is in desperate need of contact then drop me a PM and i'll give you his phone number (this is probably the most reliable method of contact at the moment)
Or PM me and I'll do the same.
 19.
On behalf of a few people on here, could someone he knows please contact him to get an update?
I'll drop him a text.
 20. I like a bit of haggling now and again. I would rather have that than no interest at all in the item I was selling! Equally, if I am interested in buying an item but think it is is a bit over-priced or out of my range, I don't see any harm in making a low starting offer. Depends on how it's phrased though. I once had some newbie basically say "Your bass is only worth £XXX so I'm doing you a favour by offering you this much...". Needless to say I politely but firmly expressed by disinterest. As others have said, life is hard enough without going out of your way to find things to get offended or upset by.
 21.
These cabs are hidden gems. I had two of these with a Gallien 700RB II and my rig was just ticking over nicely, not even close to full volume and I valiantly battled both said guitards into submission
As the previous owner of the aforementioned two cabs, I can whole-heartedly back this up. Loud and clear sound from them. Not light, but you can't really expect that from cabs costing £100!!
 22. It's not in the classifieds... it's here! http://basschat.co.u..._1#entry1878923 BTW, for home practice I use an Ashdown Perfect Ten combo. Now some people on here don't rate them at all, but I've always been happy with it's tone and performance. Easy to pick up cheaply second-hand too!
 23. Although I don't use a micro head myself, see this thread for a pic of my cab with a little cute amp on top... It's even called a Vintage, so you can't get much more "vintage" than that! http://basschat.co.uk/topic/191022-used-a-barefaced-vintage-last-night/page__p__1859523__hl__vintage__fromsearch__1#entry1859523
 24.
The modding question really depends on what you want out of your bass (or guitar for that matter). If you're buying an instrument you're intending to use (and abuse) then changing pickups, wiring, scratch-plate, etc. can make a good instrument into your instrument. If you're buying something you're certain you're going to move on at some point and want to recoup as much cash as you can, then you're better off leaving it well alone.
Great post! I think that just about sums it up!
 25.
So do we all like the sound of a single payment for a one off advert and the option of a single yearly payment?
If I understand that correctly, yes.
