Hi all We are a relatively new band called the Sour Dogs. We play predominantly original material (rocky/Americana/surfy/punky stuff) with the odd cover thrown in to make up the set (current covers are by the Doors, Chris Izaak, Stranglers and Elvis Costello). We have only played one gig so far (which was very successful) and our next is at the Bridge Hotel in Newcastle on Saturday December 15th. We are looking for a band to play an hour or so to start the evening off. Another originals band would be great, but covers are cool too as long as it isn't the hackneyed blues or classic rock standards! PM me on here or text me on 07795 434365 if you are interested or know someone who might be! Cheers, Geoff

Very nice! They "look" heavy though... if you know what I mean! What does one of those cost?
Personally, I would have butchered the bass instead. Just to keep my gear compatible with any jack out there.
Me too. In fact that is exactly what I am doing at the moment. Well, to be accurate, that's exactly what the Bass Doc is doing for me at the moment! A nice, neat rear-access two PP9 battery compartment so I can run my J-set at 18V and see what all the fuss is about. I am not precious about guitars and have no intention of selling my Geddy anyway.
Worst PU eveeeeeeeeeeer! EMG=annoying buzz and enhancing of the most annoying bass frequencies. To me a bass with EMGs is the same as NO.
Do you have any evidence to back up this rather strange claim?

Which Fender Custom Shop Bass if Money Wasn't a Factor?
Conan replied to molan's topic in Bass Guitars
Can someone clarify exactly what you get with a Fender CS instrument. Is it a combination of standard Fender features to your spec that doesn't exist in any of the current production models or is there something more?
As I understand it, it's simply a Fender that has been "made properly". -
Yep - good stuff - but make sure you are absolutely sure on the measurements! The cover for my Vintage is great, but the cut-outs for the handles are slightly misaligned. To be fair, I should have returned it but couldn't be arsed! They would have happily done me another one but I hate waste...

great bass players with terrible technique, are there any?
Conan replied to iconic's topic in General Discussion
How about Jimmy Haslip? Playing a right handed bass upside down (kind of)? Is that really brilliant or really terrible technique? Anchored thumb as well!! How dare this guy call himself a professional?!?! -
Great players are ones who play great things. The technique is irrelevant. IME people who are too hung up on technique generally don't much to offer in the way of interesting and musical parts.
I like that!! Mind if I use it in my sig? -
Technique should be the means to an end, not the end in itself.
Brilliant! Nail on the head. The only way a technique could be considered poor/weak/ineffective/inefficient is if it prevents the player playing the notes he hears in his head. Or her head -
The Compact is phenomenal in volume for its size, but sound quality is not particularly bassy or inspiring (IMO).
Interesting! Can't say that I've found either - but everyone's ears are different. You get out what you put in IMO.
never used the pick ups but I did install a EMG EQ once, it was bloody awful and cost £120, total bland crap, think I've still got it some where, It might sound better coupled up to some EMG p/u's, free to anyone who wants to pay postage!
Do you still have it?

Delighted? Maybe that's slightly too strong a word, but I am happy with my current band. Nice guys and good players, all pulling in the same direction. Yes, there are issues - but I think that can be a healthy thing as it challenges you and forces compromise. We are playing and writing original material that I actually have a lot of faith in. Only the one gig so far (but another one next month and a pseudo-residency planned in the new year) but responses were pretty favourable (apart from the volume ). Life is good!
if you have many people waiting to hear from you, you might want to find a way to get in touch just to let people know.
Fair enough. But we don't know much about the circumstances here. He has already said (via WoT) that his computer access is limited. If the only point of contact he has with folks is their e-mail address, you can surely see how this would make communication difficult? Easy enough if you have someone's phone number... Let's give him the benefit of the doubt before openly criticising eh?
Don't blame 5 string basses for the technical shortcomings of the player.
True, but there are many members on here who are far from technically adept, but still enjoy themselves playing bass live and in studios. If they sound less good on a fiver then that is a good reason for them/us to avoid them. Not all of us have the time, ability or even desire to become as technically skilled as we would like to be...

I bought my GL jazz from here and it already had an EMG J set in place. To be fair, the wiring had not been done correctly and the sound was a bit weak, but after it was sorted by the Bass Doc it sounded fantastic! OK, maybe not as much "growl" as Geddys are known for, but much more usable for all that. In fact, the first time I used it at a rehearsal the band (ALL of the band!) commented on how good my tone was. I've never had that before! Interestingly, I've never heard about the 18V thing before. Does it really make that much difference? Adding a second battery will probably involve routing out a rear-access compartment, making the bass less "authentic". Not that I have any intention of selling it I suppose... Would it be worth me getting this mod done? On the general point about EMGs though - definitely not "sterile and soul-less"!! Clean - definitely. Smooth - totally. Classy and glassy. I love them in this bass, but not sure I would install them in my fretless. The added raunch works (to my ears) in a fretless application better than in a fretted one. YMMV of course. When I listen to Bobby Vega playing slap on his EMG equipped Jazz bass, I think he sounds more like Marcus Miller than any Fender MM sig bass!!
