1.
What if it was a tribute band called Rick Renholm & The Telephones? And what if they played for free?
Who told you about my new band?! We are playing in aid of Help for Heroes this weekend. As we are all nice guys we said we'd do it for nowt... Are we doing something wrong?
  2.
Although this is a poorly thought out analogy. A better one would be if there were a few plumbers out there offering to come and do it for free - thereby doing the normal plumbers out of work.
Not quite. That would apply if there were pro bands out there playing for nothing. Then we would have two differing types of "professional" - those who were happy to work for nothing and those who (rightly) demand payment in return for their services. But as we are talking about hobbyists doing pros out of work, your own analogy is flawed. Either that or I haven't understood it properly.
  3. Never seen one before. Cute little sucker though isn't it?
  4.
Bass and treble at about 9o'clock and mids at about 3o'clock is flat.... its not an amp for fiddlers - it makes you just get on with playing Bloody loud as well.
Certainly no question about the volume!! I'm sure I read somewhere that "flat" is bass and treble on 2 and mid on full. That's my default setting and it usually does the trick but is definitely not "mid-heavy". I like a lot of mid in my tone, and sometimes find it wanting. Last weekend I used it on a hollow stage in a pretty packed room and it just seemed to suck all the mids out. Even with the bass cut further there was a lack of mids. Part of the problem could be my bass choices too I suppose - the Status and Geddy Lee are hardly known for their middly tones!!
  5. Bear in mind that that BB is a relatively new cab. Not many people own them and most of them seem very happy with them. The likelihood of one coming up on the second hand market must be pretty slim... However - someone is selling a vintage http://basschat.co.uk/topic/188514-barefaced-vintage-and-tc-electronic-rh450/ and although there is interest in it, the prospective buyer sounds like they may be getting rid of a Compact...
  6. I've got one that looks pretty much identical to this one, but with a mint green scratchplate. It's a great bass - very well made and good sounding. In fact, I've just has it defretted and it sounds even better as a fretless... Definitly recommended.
  7. I love my Vintage. Loud as hell and deep as the ocean. Light as a feather but strong as steel... These were originally designed to ideally pair with valve amps - but they sound fantastic with SS amps too. A 2x15 that is a one-handed lift. Awesome. Buy it now as there are not many of these about.
  8.
4. If it sounds good to you, and nothing's blown up, then it IS good!
For most people, this is enough. However, some of us like the science stuff. A few of us actually understand it (or some of it at least!). Some of us have even made our gear choices on the back of this science stuff. It works for us. It gets very wearing to be told, in every thread about cabs, that "I used this for years and it sounded good to me". Good for you, but don't question the ears of those of us who have noticed a difference after listening to the advice of the experts. Thank you all.
  9.
Geddy Lee (MIJ)
What's that signauture on the scratchplate? (Just out of interest)
  10. Agree with jezzaboy re the Ibbies. Great basses. Well made and great sounding (if sometimes a little scooped and/or aggressive depending on the model). There is a lad at our school who uses a GSR200 and I have to admit I was blown away by it's tone and playability! Most Epiphones are a triumph of style over substance... Japanese Fenders - that's where you should be looking!
  11. Oh yeah... Richard Cousins (bassist with the Robert Cray Band).
  12.
You do realise that you are arguing with someone who makes his living working with high end pro audio hire / installation companies??
Even doctors get it wrong sometimes...
  13.
The hartke LH stuff won't give you more eq.
Definitely not! The only drawback with that amp range in fact... I'm considering some kind of parametric or graphic EQ pedal so that I can add some more mids.... Of course, if you like a scooped sound they are great!
  14. Colin Moulding from XTC. David Margen from Santana.
  15.
ie lets say a 200w ampeg 115 and a 410hlf which goes to 500w with an svt pro-6 1100w at 4 ohms, you might not notice the 115 farting due to the volume of the 410? as it would easily take the 550w being put to it? so a newbie to this setup could through inexperiance blow there 15?
Assuming that the manufacturer's quoted ratings are true (and many aren't), and you ran the amp flat out (why would you EVER need to do that?!?!) then yes - you would almost certainly blow the 115. Most ratings published by manufacturers should be taken with a pinch of salt (Remember the RH450 that is actually 236W?!). If, however, the 115 and 410 were both rated at, say, 500W - then the assumption is that they would both draw equal power from the amp at any setting. Whether they would put out the same volume (which is far more important) depends on many more parameters like cab design, speaker sensitivity, room temperature, planetary alignment...
  16.
I generally avoid J's because of the scoop.
Well, if you want rid of your '71 J...
  17.
aesthetic syntax.
Now there's a good name for a band!
  18.
Get a cart to help with the cab. £20 from Amazon.
That's not going to help her get it down the stairs though...
  19. Maybe the Fender ethos of "mass production, bolted together in a factory" shows that a five string is more than just a four string with an extra string added? I suspect that many of the other manufacturers (the ones usually regarded as having decent B strings) have actually re-designed their instruments as fivers rather than just adapted their four string designs. Or maybe I'm just being naive?
we're crippled at the moment from lack of technical support because we can't afford any. We've just been let down by a developer after 10 months and Steve knows a lot more than me and we have found two people willing to take this on as a fully paid job but now it's the lack of funds holding us back.
There appear to be a number of people who are members of this forum who have the technical skills to help, maybe as a short term solution a few favours could be called in? If I had those skills I would certainly volunteer them to a forum that has given me such pleasure.
I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't want to see the forum struggle because some members (and businesses) who sell quite a lot of gear on here have short arms and long pockets?
Good point. But at the same time, do we want to discourage genuine contributing members from selling the odd item? As you say, some people only appear to join this site to sell stuff, and I think they should definitely have to pay for the privilege.Charging everyone may be counter-productive I feel...

    Slow?

Me too. From work and from home. Just on basschat. Not complaining, just saying.
  22.
But does it matter...? People don't have to be led down certains paths all the time.
It's an interesting question, and if someone wants to know the answer - then yes, it does matter. Nobody is leading anyone down any paths here - just asking a question! Nobody has to answer if they don't want to.
  23. When this question was last asked, I was firmly anchored... or at least so I thought! When I actually started to pay more attention to what I was doing, I realised that my thumb did indeed float from time to time. Strangely, I now find that it has a tendency to float more and more... But for that heavier touch when I dig in (which is pretty often!) it goes back to it's home anchorage. I'm happy either way.
  24. How much does that "pour-in" method raise the level of the fretboard though? It looks a pretty thick coat so I guess it's either a huge amount of sanding or you leave the nut at it's original height (i.e. what it was when the frets were in place)? Seems a heck of a lot of work...
