1.
Quite. I have always enjoyed the live Rush stuff from the late 80's. The band at their peak, and Wal tone too - Geddy's best tone! It's cool to hear the old songs spruced up with the Wal.
Ha ha! I politely but totally disagree! That was also the stage when he ditched the distortion, grew his fingernails and played those horrible light gauge strings.... I hated that tone with a passion! Too clean, quacky and clinical. And on YYZ it sounds worst of all!! Still, it would be a dull world if we all liked the same things!
 2.
Been wanting a mirror one for my 4 stringer as long as I've had it.
Now you're talking!!
 3.
If you want to hear what a Thumb bass sounds like, listen to The Reality Of My Surroundings, or Give A Monkey A Brain And He'll Swear He's The Centre Of The Universe by Fishbone. Thumb 5s were used on everything and Reality has a lot of fretless on it. There's a range of tones in use too - some dubby deep stuff, the odd bit of slap, etc.
Pleased I read the whole thread before posting - because this is exactly what I was about to say!! 4. Not sure the tort works so well with that colour as it does with black, red or white basses.... Then again, I don't think the stock plate looks that great either Of the two, I prefer the tort
 5.
Jaco.... I am sure any bass he picked up sounded the way he wanted it to. the feel/soul/fingers created most of the sound
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XWuJUTX3TIc
 6. That's great! And it has also become my latest purchase....
 7. The DVD arrived on saturday and I've watched it about six times since then! It's interesting though, when you watch other episodes of this series, which are one hour programmes, they concentrate on the making of one particular album. The rest of the story is about the various excesses in which the band were indulging at the time (e.g. Fleetwood Mac with Rumours, Black Sabbath with Paranoid). Rush seem to have no such vices, so to fill the programme and make it up to an hour, they get to do two albums!!
 8. My knowledge of things, bass-related and otherwise, has increased logarithmically since joining this site. A finer online community you will not find.
 9.
Remember not to blow on the solder joints as they are cooling
Why?
 10. I've often wondered... what exactly are these wiring kits/harnesses of which you speak? What is their main use and their advantage over standard wiring options? They sound interesting! What does a typical one cost?
 11.
Agree it would be nice to hear / see more of the gear Geddy uses rather than just his bass.
"Geddy Lee’s bass sound is a combination of five channels, which represent various aspects of an entire bass sound, and run from clean to distorted-beyond-all-reason. The two main components of his sound are an Avalon DI and a Palmer DI. The Avalon is warm with a punchy midrange, and the Palmer is super clear with an extended low end. The last three channels are all distorted to one degree or another. There’s an instantiation of Eleven dialed up to sound like an old Fender Bassman—slightly distorted, but not crazy. There’s a SansAmp, which is more distorted and further down in the mix. Then there’s an Orange amp, which we run off to a bass cab backstage and throw another Palmer PDI-03 on. It’s cranked wide open and is preposterously distorted. It sits in the back of the bass mix. All of this gets sub-grouped, compressed, and run into an instantiation of Waves API 550A EQ." Riggghhhht... So I should be able to get pretty close to that with a GL jazz then?
 12. I had no idea that this DVD existed!! Off to Amazon right now....
 13. If you like MOTP, then The Tall Ships is a damned good album too - highly recommended. If It Bites are touring with Frost (possibly with special guests Arena, Kino and Martin Orford?!) then that's a John Mitchell overdose that I could put up with! I'm also seeing It Bites in October as they are supporting Fish in Leamington Spa Back on topic.... Still failing to click with Clockwork Angels... It's good, but, for Rush - a bit dull and uninspired. So far. More listening required!
 14.
I wish i could afford just one of these beauties! would be the last bass i would ever buy!
How many times have we all said that?! Bump for a beautiful piece of British musical heritage. One day I might even try one....
 15. Sorry guys! I should have said that this went on the first day.
 16.
First play just confused me as with 6 Knobs, a selector switch and a passive option. In fact it is a straightforward system, with some extras. Basically its Master volume (pops up for passive option), Pan/blend-between jazz and humbucker, a dual or single pick-up selector switch and active hi, med and low knobs. The "extras" is a pan/Blend to mix in the Piezo and magnetic pickups.
You found out more about it in 10 minutes than I did in two months!!
 17.
..."pretty" woods and 30-year-old technology are "worth" the prices...
Same could be said of Wal - and look at the prices they go for!
 18.
200T is way cool. LAter rebranded as the 350 when Ampeg decided they missed trick by quoting the 200w 8ohms output instead of the 350 @ 4ohms.
Cool indeed! This used to be my amp and it sounds great. Lovely rich tones and loads of adjustment available. I actually miss it, even though it weighs rather a lot (although far less than some of the valve SVTs!!). When I sold it I didn't have the BF Vintage - I bet it would sound awesome through that cab! Good luck with the sale Drew! Just out of interest, would you be interested in splitting the stack and if so how much would you be looking for for the amp? I know someone who might be interested...
 19. In a similar style to the Ayers piece.... I always thought this was played on a 'Ray: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ILjWG2KNIhE

 21.
If I want Uncoloured - then the bass goes DI into the desk.
This. But amp-wise, as previously mentioned, the Hartke LHs give clarity (and volume) for very little cash.
 22.
Maybe this is more to your liking?
Indeed it is! No offence to Myung - who is an incredible player. But much of his stuff with DT gets lost in the mix due to his tone and the fact that he is usually doubling what Petrucci plays. I think that is what the OP is on about to an extent? Although JM can hardly be described as being a poor player!! Are we talking about "slap" as a style of playing or about that typical tone employed by slap players - i.e. scooped??
 23. The Faridas are great, but yes the colour options are limited. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aks3fSHA1jU&feature=player_embedded Tokais are brilliant, but don't come up that often (not the eighties ones, anyway). The VMs come with the "Duncan Designed" pickups - which are certainly better than the stock Squier models, and may not require upgrading. Definitely listen to them first. I've played some Squier Affinity basses that were as good as some "proper" Fenders - but there are some pretty awful ones out there too, so you definitely have to try before you buy. I bought a nameless Jazz copy on here a couple of years ago - mainly just to have a proper try at the J format to see how I got on with it. At £100 is was great! Lovely neck and just a nice weight. Out came the pickups (which were very loud and growly, but a bit microphonic) and in went a set of Wizard Hammers. Now it's a great bass, and even if I decided to get it refinished in purple (which I am seriously thinking about!) it would still have cost WAY less than £300 in total. Take your time. Look around. Try as many as you can, but get ready to jump quickly when you find one that you like. However, it may not be the one that others tell you is "the best"! Trust your own judgement.
