1.
I'm 46 and still remember 2112 being released
You're the same age as me! I was TEN years old when 2112 came out. You were a Rush fan at that age?!?! I'm impressed!!
 2. I find that heavier gauges just give more tone and volume all round - not just more bottom. Strings on steroids if you like! I've just ordered two sets of DR Hibeams in 50 - 110 gauge from the States. Tone-tastic!! Good point about the truss rod though. Also a change of gauge may need a full set-up, or at least string height adjustment.
 3.
Great player and a slap in the face of the pick haters out there...
All his playing is great, but it's particularly when he uses a pick that he shows his sheer class. Amazing groove, accuracy and clarity. And funk!!
 4.
http://www.fretnotgu.../neck-angle.php
Cheers for that! I had already found it on an old thread - very useful! You learn something new every day!
 5. I have no idea what this is about.... and I have a three-bold Jazz! Please enlighten this thicko about the "micro-tilt" system to which you refer?? Thanks.
 6.
the presence of a feedback folder awards a false sense of security/assurance. I've sometimes wondered if there's a not upsetting the applecart mindset.
Not sure I'd agree with this. I think they are a bit like employers references - you read between the lines and focus on what is NOT said. I've found them to be very useful. But on the other hand I have dealt with newbies and sellers/buyers with no written feedback. So far so good!
 7.
Put a ding in it yourself, then it's done - and you can stop worrying about it!
Chuck Berry did that with his lovely Gibson 335. The mark was in the shape of a fish from the cod family.... He even wrote a song about it. 8.
Maybe if I was Geddy Lee with great PA, techs, etc,
Not to mention the constant involvement of the Custom Shop, brand new strings every gig, the aroma of roasting chicken....
 9.
+1 to the above comments.
And that one! Every time you play a gig with your new 'cheap' bass you will think "why am I playing this when I have my lovely MM at home?"
 10.
Strings make a massive difference, it's expensive to experiment with lots of different makes and type of string but it can completely change the character of a bass and is the first thing to try if you're not happy with your sound.
Yep. So many people rush to replace pickups, bridges, nuts, tuners and assorted hardware when they want to change the sound of their basses. Few even think to change the strings!! There are so many brands and gauges that it can become a bit of a quest for the holy grail, but it is definitely worth trying half a dozen or so brands so that you can see (hear) the differences. Gauges too. Heavier gauges = more tone (generally).
 11. Seen Geddy, Lemmy, Neil Murray, Colin Hodgkinson, Mark King, Flea, Pino, Geezer, JJB, and a few others that temporarily slip my memory! Would love to see Marcus, Stanley, Giblin and Danny Thompson. Real regrets - Phil Lynott and Duck Dunn.
 12. Wow! Totally Ged-tastic!! Sorry to hear about your diagnosis man, and good luck with the sale.
 13.
You need to try one! You might be converted instantly!
I know! If only I knew someone local who had one to try...
 14.
I don't think they are scooped at all. I think they are... er... hilly... like scooped...
Eh? You'll have to talk me through that one man!
 15.
I'd like to know where F3nd3r got the name 'Jazz' from... .
Maybe because "better than the Precision (for some people)" wouldn't fit on the headstock?
 16.
The guitar was initially aimed at jazz guitarists AFAIK
Read the headstock! It's called the "Jazz Bass".

 18. Five pages and no mention of Dave Meros? For me, the ultimate Ric growl.
 19.
It's claimed that "....................many bass players who want to be more "forward" in the mix (including smaller bands such as power trios) prefer the Jazz Bass."
Maybe.... but when that particular marketing nugget was coined, what exactly did a three-piece consist of? What amps and (more importantly) speakers were they using? Does that statement still apply to the same degree today, with all the changes/improvements in instruments and amplification? Just wondering out loud...
 20. I am embarrassed to admit that I have never played a Ray or one of its derivatives/copies I do, however, have a pretty strong idea in my head of how I think they sound. I find them limited and unsubtle, but in a good way, if that makes sense? "That" sound is immense - powerful but somehow weedy at the same time.... how does that work?!? Loads of treble and loads of bass, but scooped. On the other hand, some players make them a phat mid-fest. I really have no idea what I am trying to say here.
 21.
It's the highs that shout Stingray at me, whenever I hear the piercing clacky, almost noisy treble that sounds separated from the low end. To me that is the Ray sound.
Like this? I think it might have been a Cutlass though... I've often wondered what happened to Tony Wall. Maybe a bit limited technically, but he had a great sound and played some great basslines for that band... He was good in their predecessors (sp?) too - The Reluctant Stereotypes.
 22.
Can someone please build me one of these cabinets?!?!
You must want it for a coffee table. You can't possibly need any more cabinets!!
 23.
Ha! No... I was using the TC RH450 with the Compact which, in retrospect, was a head I hated.
Ah! So it wasn't you who said "Used the RH450 at a rehearsal tonight with a single HS210. Normally I'd take the Scout... HOLY SMOKE! It was great. Best rehearsal tone I've ever had. Fat, even, punchy.. all the usual cliches... and best of all, lots of punch on the low E below the 5th." then?
 24.
But I'm wondering if the M-pulse 600 would be too powerful for the scout cab to cope.
As a single cab it would be running at 8 ohms wouldn't it? It is rated at 300watts, which would be about what the head would put out.... So I guess that purely from a ratings POV it should be able to handle it...but it's not as though you'll be running the head flat out is it? How big is the room for the annual sheep-shearers' ball?
 25.
Conan, that's a great post - I've been looking to learn some of the basics of the technique, if for nothing more than giving me something else to work on. That video was superb. Would you also be able to advise on any EQ changes you'd recommend to nail the tone? Assume big tone/treble?
I believe Scott is a member on here (or at least was a few months ago). His videos are really good! As far as EQ goes, a lot depends on personal preferences. I actually use pretty much the same tone for slap as I do for fingerstyle - but then again I use a pretty bright tone to start with. Newish strings help IMO. There is certainly no need to whack up the top end, and it can end up sounding harsh if you overdo it. Don't shy away from the mids either - for some reason a lot of slap players think you need to cut the mid for slapping. If you like that tone then fine, but I actually like a bit of midrange to give definition. The scooped sound is fine when practicing by yourself, but it gets lost in a band scenario. Plus, it obviously works for some players, as this gorgeous line demonstrates...
