Stranglers in rosewood neck horror shock
Conan replied to The Dark Lord's topic in General Discussion
Rosewood neck or rosewood fingerboard? -
They vary a LOT! Some are very good though and they are a useful resource. Some are clearly put up by bedroom players who want to show the world how talented they are. These are usually the ones to avoid! However, the point about a total beginner (13 years old or otherwise) is a good one. How would a total beginner know which was a good lesson series and which wasn't? It is difficult to pitch at beginners without seeming totally patronising...
Does anyone ever read Amazon reviews?
Absolutely! In this particular case - that was the whole point!

I didn't realise anyone would take this thread seriously!

I simply had to post this here. Skank, have you been reviewing items on Amazon? Just wonderful. Fender Geddy Jazz with Lindy Fralin pups (Withdrawn)

Interesting! Not particularly well written though, and some of the comments are extremely subjective - for example: "Jaco Pastorius was unquestionably the greatest musician to ever wield a bass guitar." Oh really? Thanks for sharing though!
By the way, tabs for Steely Dan's My Old School would be much appreciated...dreading tackling that one for some reason!
That sounds like a lot of work for not much return... On the Dan thing, try PMing Pete Academy on here - he is master of all things Steely... -
Off to learn Get The Funk Out! Cheers Conan & Higgie!
Learning it is one thing... playing it in a freezing cold rehearsal studio is another - extremely tiring track to play!! -
Christ, you got that right! Can be useful though, as examples of exactly how not to do it!
True - but there are some good ones too. The guy who calls himself something like TJH3113 is awesome when it comes to Rush stuff, and when I was struggling a bit with Extreme's "Get the funk out" earlier this year I found the clip by Higgie (member on here) to be really useful!! But you have to wade through a lot of dross to find the quality! And none of it was any good for helping me learn Dream Theater's "Pull me under". That is just a silly bass line anyway! -
As much as I love EW&F..... that was atrocious!!
I know! How can someone who has played some of the best disco/funk/soul basslines ever, play such unmitigated garbage live?

As above. Listen to it a few times without picking up a bass. Then play along with it by ear, enough time that it is commited to my memory. Any awkward bits that I can't quite work out, I might resort to youtube - but there are a lot of poor covers on there! -
Alan Thompson. He done a guest lecture at my college. Thoroughly nice guy and was brilliant on both bass and guitar.
Danny Thompson plays upright on the majority of John Martyn's albums. Wasn't AT mainly used live instead of John Giblin?
Earth Wind and Fire has Verdine White, learnt a lot from him.
Yep. Top class player.
Abraham Laboriel on most, if I remember correctly.
Also featuring Will Lee, Marcus Miller, Anthony Jackson and Chuck Rainey. Does it get any better than that?!

Andy just bought a set of strings from me - great comms, prompt payment made in faith - very straightforward and a pleasure to deal with. Highly recommended!
Thrash Metal in some dive = take a cheapie
To me, deliberately choosing a cheap guitar is like downgrading your commitment to your performance. If I played a guitar just because it was cheap I wouldn't enjoy it as much and as a result wouldn't play as well, which would affect the whole band. That said, my Status has had a few dings over the years and it's pretty bullet-proof (figuratively speaking - it's never had to cope with real live ammunition!). I think once you get past/over the first ding all subsequent ones just add to the "mojo"!!
Value/Price doesn't come into it for me, I gig what I own. My basses range in value from £200 - £5000 and I don't consider the value when I'm doing a gig, as they are instruments to be played and enjoyed.
Totally agree. Except the £5000 bit.... I have never owned and would never own a bass worth that much!!
Nobody believes that the song is king more than me. I hate overplaying. However, in my opinion, Flea comes up with parts that are busy yet complement the song beautifully. I have rarely heard a player do this as well, even over players like Jack Bruce and Geddy Lee in a three-piece setting.
Spot on! For example, some of Geddy's playing in "Headlong Flight". It's not big and it's not clever! Too many notes maestro!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEiCklEkyeg
