1. Some nice playing on Robert Cray's stuff. Not sure who the bassist is though... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rA6Pj6qXFrk&feature=related

    I want THIS!!!
I think this is the most beautiful bass ive ever seen...
Interesting... I think it's hideous and looks half-finished! Just goes to show that everyone is different.
  3.
Since the internet came in, are more bands touring or fewer? More Are there more 'stepping-stone' mid-level venues or fewer? About the same number Is it easier to get a gig or more difficult? Easier Is more good music being made or less? More
Have you any evidence for these assertions?
  4.
I'm not really sure why anyone really cares TBH mate, almost everything can sound like almost anything.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpBZDnhvsP0&feature=related
  5.
I would have no problem downloading Elton John's whole back catalogue (if I could be arsed)...
To lighten the mood slightly. This is great. I just don't know where to start with this!
  6.
Ghost of a Chance is Alex's finest hour - it's a superb solo.
Yes indeed!! Good call that man.
  7.
I've been alternating Clockwork Angels with Map of the Past. The clarity of all the instruments in Map is amazing and the space for the songs to unfold is stunning. A lot of Clockwork Angels does seem to be full of white noise with not a lot of definition to Lifeson's guitar parts. Some killer bass riffs tho'
Me too! MOTP is a fantastic album. In some ways I wish Geddy et al would listen to some British Prog to hear just how melodic the genre CAN be. Not that Rush are really "prog" as such any more... I actually find CA to be a rather fatiguing listen. It's all a bit frantic at times. No space in some of the tracks. It's quite a relief to get to "Halo Effect" as it is the first track that allows the listener to take a breather!!. Although I love listening to bass (obviously!), I think the bass and vocals are a bit high in the mix. The guitar is more of a texture in many parts rather than a definable instrument. Nice to hear the use of the acoustic again though! Overall, although I sound very critical here, I think it's a good album. I just have such a long-standing love of Rush that each new album of the last 20 years has been a triumph of hope over expectation. Get back to the melodies guys! There are some in CA, but there is also a lot of empty riffage IMO. BTW, which poster is it that lists names? The only one I got was the double-sided one with the angel on one side and the SMPTe-type blimp on the other...
  8.
IMO boiling string is a complete waste of time. I tried it once and the D string snapped when I put them back on. I couldn't hear any significant improvement in the others. Too much effort for too little gain.
I used to do it and it definitely worked for me. Some sets were boiled two or three times, but the improvement got less each time and lasted less time too. I got some meths from school but haven't needed to use it yet. I too fail to see the necessity of the tube - unless it reduces stress on the strings by avoiding the need to coil them... but then again they may have spent months or even years in their packet coiled up, so what is the harm in doing it for another hour in a tub of meths?
  9. The selling market is a bitch at the moment. My heart bleeds to see basses of this quality going for such low prices... PMed!
  10.
And if the concept of 'worst' is so damnably offensive to so many of our brethren, why did they read it rather than simply pass by on the other side?
Ex-bloody-sactly.
  11.
... to be followed by 'what's your most disliked colour?' - actually that would make more sense than this.
Yet you just can't stop yourself posting in it!
  12.
£10...mmmm... that 4 pints of beer for gods sake
Wow! Where do you drink! Please stop posting - I can't take my eyes of your avatar!!
  13.
...they're touring with an orchestra ...
14.
I will be there with bells on. Have not missed Rush since 1983 on any tour. At the moment we are very lucky because they have been touring every 2/3 years since the R30 tour in 2004. If you put 50p in a jar every week inbetween Rush tours you would get a top ticket, t shirt kebab and possibly a hand job inclusive. It's better than smoking fags or saving up for some ridiculous tatoo
I like your sense of perspective!
That is strange... I go through strings quickly but have had a set of Newtones on since before Xmas..which is unheard of for me. I have looked after them and protected them but even so..a month is around the best I can do for strings normally...and the brightness of strings is critical for me.
I like 'em bright and zingy too. That particular set may have been unrepresentative and to be fair, they are the first set of NTs I have tried. I am also judging their brightness in comparison to DR Fatbeams, so maybe it's not a fair comparison. Good for the price though, as they are around half the price of DRs.
  16. There is probably some deep and Zen quote referring to "exceptions that prove rules" here.... but essentially there ARE no rules! Every so often a player comes along to does things differently to the accepted norms of any particular genre. All power to them!!
  17.
i cant stand billy sheehan but i know hes amazing.
Yep. I enjoy listening to him talk, but hate listening to him play!
  18.
BC's market place i have always found VERY handy and from now on i would rather gladly give them £10 ( or what ever) on the sale of my bass. Also thanks to BC for keeping this free.
No offence, but if you sold a bass in the £750 range and only donated a tenner that would be rather taking advantage of the "free" access to the for sale threads! Ebay does reach a larger audience than BassChat, so sometimes the costs might be worth it. Increasingly though, it seems that Ebay is for buyers rather than sellers.
  19.
I think this is possibly the worst thread I've ever seen on Basschat...
Why? Because you don't like it? I think it's rather fun... I enjoy it when precious people get their knickers in a twist!
  20.
For me it's Billy Sheehan. Yes he's very a gifted bloke who can fly about the neck like EVH, but all that tapping, hammering on/off electric drills etc did nowt for me at all!
Yeah. His tone sounds like a buffalo farting under water too.
  21.
Dunno why this thread is getting such a slagging, it's just someone trying to spark some conversation, and at 4 pages and rising, surely that's what a forum is about?
Exactly! Some people need to chill the feck out!
I use Newtone customs now and I feel they are the string that DR use to be, IMO.
I have a set of Newtone Diamonds on my Geddy Jazz. Great when new, but nowhere near the life span of the DRs for me.
  23.
i'm not a fan of the low b on my 5, it just lacks the depth and authority that i want from it. I've been debating on having it modded recently, refinished in something eccentric, routed for a MM humbucker bridge pup, Delano pickups and a John East pre. I'd love to put the electronics out of a HS Bongo 5 in there, that would be absolutely IMMENSE but wouldn't be easy.
This would imply that the problem with the B was down to the electronics. Is there any evidence that this is the case? I always thought/assumed that it was more down to design compromises involved in making a "cheap" five string?
