Dr Lo-Riders

I didn't find the Lo-Riders noticeably "tighter" than their Fat Beams, or any other string! And, as others have commented, I did notice that the LRs lost their zing earlier than the others. On the price thing, I have looked at buying in bulk from the States - but if you get hit for import duties and suchlike, the savings can be minimal. It seems to be a bit of a lottery whether you get charged or not!
  2. Nice! I'm completely unfamiliar with the Carvin brand... looking at the pickup arrangement I guess this would have characteristics similar to a Jazz and/or MM stingray? What do the various controls do? Is it a two or three band EQ? Also, would you be prepared to post the bass?
  3. Despite my earlier reticence, I really love the tone I get from my Geddy Lee Jap Jazz with EMG pickups. They appear fairly regularly in the for sale forums on here for around £60, making them a hell of a bargain. Wizards are great too and are reasonably priced. I like Hammers but if you want a more "vintage" tone then the 64s might suit better. Dark and crunchy? 84s are your man. Wizard will also wind to your own specs.... It's all good!
  4.
Hey man, you got any contact details.
Follow the link in the OP....
  5.
My work comittments scupper me from going for this as well!
I'm going to have a word with the HR director and see what my options are... not holding my breath though!
  6. I'm surprised that this hasn't been posted here, especially as the last incumbent (JD1) is a member! Great prog rock band based in the North East. High profile gigs coming up. Great musicians... I'm going for it myself but may not be able to give the commitment they want due to my job situation, but this is a wonderful opportunity!! 7.
I'm stunned that people use full boost, especially on low frequencies. With preamps usually giving at least +-10db, that's a hell of a lot of extra low end. If you're boosting all three bands, though, would you not just leave things flatter and turn up a bit?

The "EQ is a fix for having bought the wrong gear" argument is rubbish.
Both of these! When you buy gear, it is yours to use as you see fit - without having to worry about what others might think! Tone controls are also "effects". Remember that a wah pedal is just a foot-operated tone control... On my Status I only have bass and trebvle cut and boost. I use both a lot - for various reasons. Sometimes subtle, sometimes over-the-top! By experimenting I soon get a feel for what works and what doesn't. Same with the amp (although the LH500 has far less to "play with" than other amps I have owned). Some people use one bass for one tone and like to stick to that. That's fine. I prefer versatility from one instrument. By utilising the pickup pan selector and active tone controls, the variation I can get from the Status is incredible. It would be a shame not to use it! Horses for courses though - depending on the situation.
  8. It's your bass - do what the hell you want with/to it!
  9. I love my GL. It oozes quality and has a lovely action (for me). But is it worth 3-4 times that of a VMJ? Only the buyer can decide that based on their own criteria. Sounds like a second-hand GL might be the way to go? There have been a few on here recently at the £450-550 mark. Can't fo far wrong there!
  10.
Duracells have the most growl, they are also fat-sounding, clean, smooth, edgy, deep, piano-like and vintagey. Energizers are good batteries but they don't cut through or sit perfectly in the mix like Duracells do.
11. You can get large packs of Duracell batteries online for pennies.... try Amazon or Ebay.
  12. I bought a used Squier Affinity P for £65 on here. Condition good but not brilliant (this one looks to be at least as good). Add maybe £35 for the SPB-3 and £40 for the bridge? Not sure you can ask for more money due to the scratchplate - even if it's a genuine Fender one! Maybe a tenner tops. I think £200 is rather steep. Not sure I would go above £160 for this example, unless it is a spectacularly good player!
  13.
and the rest of the tone is in your fingers
A lot of the tone is in the fingers, but boosting low frequencies is more to do with strings and cabinets! With you on the DR fatbeams though...
  14.
the depth of the sound sometimes isnt deep enough.
Not sure exactly what this means. Not enough really low "trouser-flapping" bass frequencies? Is that really what you are striving for? Or do you mean deep as in a "full, rounded" tone? If you're not getting enough low bass (true "bass" rather than low mids) it's most likely to be your strings and/or your speaker cabinet(s) that are the root of the problem IMO. What amplification set-up are you using? Your sif implies that you always DI into the desk... No on-stage monitoring?
  15. This jazz of which you speak... is it set up properly? Particularly the pickup heights? Is it sounding too thin? Too clean? Too scooped (i.e. lacking in midrange).... What kind of strings are you using (brand, gauge, etc)? Have you thought about replacing the pickups with something more aggressive? It would be easier to give advice if you were a bit more specific about the problem!
  16.
I'm saving up for a Tracy Emin one. It has a tampon for a truss rod. So now.
They would go for absorbent prices...
  17. A set of strings for the price of a pint of beer?!?! Wow!
  18. Interesting! To me, that neck just doesn't quite look right... Is that the standard fingerboard option? I just think it needs blocks or a RW board. Just what I'm used to I suppose...
  19.
. I'm sorry to have to say that although we all enjoyed the audition with you, we've chosen a bass player who was already quite familiar with a large part of our setlist and because we have gigs imminent we felt this was the sensible way forward. It was a close run thing,
Bastards. You're better off out of that one!
  20.
I bet if I go onto Ebay now it will be full of great tickets at ludicrous prices. It really pisses me off.
Totally. The same thing happened when I tried to buy Billy Connolly tickets last year. They all get bought up by people/organisations with the intention of selling the gig out and then selling the tickets on at vastly inflated prices. And this is legal? Do the artists or promoters care or are they only bothered about the venue being full - not the punters who are being ripped off in their name! Grrrrr.
  21. I'm with the "some you've told" on this one! Too much hassle by far.
  22.
Rich fruit cake - with a fine single malt.
And a big chunk of Wensleydale... Heaven!
  23. Main instrument "other". Yet just about every orchestral instrument is listed.... who says the BBC is elitist? Keeping time with a drummer is not quite the same as tapping a rhythm on the space bar of a keyboard. So I'm not sure how reliable this test is. And I still insist that one of those "genres" was reggae!
  24.
Arguably, because a lot of Squiers have better specs, and are at least as well made. I would take a Squier VM Jazz over a MIM Jazz any day (and yes, I have owned both!).
True. But it does blur the boundaries somewhat as you now have Squiers selling at similar prices to "genuine" Fenders. Or whatever passes for a "genuine" Fender these days!
  25. I don't read so I don't need to turn pages.... but I use my dictaphone.
