Seymour Duncan SPB-1 Lindy Fralin DiMarzio There is quite a large price difference
I'm not convinced that you always get what you pay for. All of the above-mentioned manufacturers are pretty pricey. I put a brand new set of these in my Squier P and the difference was amazing! You can't go far wrong at that price. Look in the for sale threads on here too - there are plenty of used pickups being sold by people who are on the same tone journey that you are about to embark upon!
Well those cabs do! Maybe twenty years out of date but it works....
Depends how they are wired up? If they have some sort of internal crossover feeding only the lower frequencies to the fifteen then yes, I would agree.
Sell the Badass (which contrary to popular bass folklore, adds next to nothing to the tone) and upgrade your pups with the proceeds.
Sounds like good advice to me!!

Personally I have to gripe with Ashdown, but it would certainly be a good idea to try your bass through a different set-up before selling it on. Where are you located? I'm fairly sure you will be close to at least one Basschatter who would be happy to let you try their amplification. If you are anywhere near Newcastle you can try mine! I would also try some different pickups. You don't say what you have, only that they are "upgraded". The pickups are a huge part of the sound, (so are the strings BTW!!) so try another one and it might give you the tone you crave (whatever that is, as you also don't say!). Second-hand pickups go for great prices on here and if they are not to your taste you can usually sell them on for pretty much what you paid for them. Be careful wiring them in yourself though - it's not always as easy as some would believe!
70s spacing
Actually, I was thinking about this. The bridge pickup is certainly closer to the neck pickup than it would be on a 60s spacing, but due to the extra length of the Badass, the bridge pickup is actually quite close to the bridge itself... More like a 60s spacing in fact! Which factor is more important, and would have more influence on the sound? Hmmmm....
- Weighs a ton. - Small neck causes pain in my hands.
I've got big hands, and I can't say I've had a problem with this. It takes a bit of adjustment, but is actually very comfortable to me.
It weighed a ton and the neck was akin to a pencil.
I've weighed mine and it comes in at around eight and a half pounds. Is this heavy for a J? Doesn't feel heavy to me...
the 10 for punch and clarity and the 15 for the low end extension.
Calling Alex Claber!! My BF Vintage has two fifteens in it. It has by far the greatest amount of midrange punch and clarity of any cab I have used. When I used two Ashdown 410s I found that they had loads of bottom end and top end fizz, but lacked middle. The old chestnut about speaker diameter affecting tone is obsolete.
Un yay - not for as much as I would like and I got mugged by PayPal and eBay for fees
Yeah. That's exactly why I don't intend to put my Cort up on Ebay. It's just too unpredictable and potentially expensive. You end up almost giving stuff away and then paying for the privilege!

Is it worth trying the Promethean amp through the Trace cabs?
I want to know how these other posters can achieve a thick full sound with a 30watt Little Bastard and a 2x12 cabinet that I cannot achieve with a 500watt Trace Elliot amp and two Trace 15" cabs
A very reasonable question!

BIG strings?
Would you prefer lined or unlined?
Howard, buggers can't be choosers mate! In an ideal world, unlined (as it looks more cool) but markers on the top of the neck where the frets would be... But I'm easily satisfied
I play in a rock covers band and currently run a Trace 1215 with a 1518 extension cab. On paper, this rig should be more than ample for my requirements but, as with previous rigs, I find it lacking and have to have the output control on about 5 or 6 (about as loud as it'll go) to provide enough body for the four piece outfit I'm with.

I don't have a problem with cutting through the mix or volume, I can easily drown out everyone else but the sound is too thin for what I need
OK, now I'm confused! What exactly do you "find lacking" if you are capable of drowning out the rest of the band? But at the same time your tone doesn't have enough "body"? If you can only get that volume by cutting the bass frequencies then that should tell you something. As has already been suggested, you would seem to be in need of a much more powerful amp so that it can boost the (very inefficient) low frequencies and still have enough juice left to boost everything else!! I don't think your cabs are the issue. Despite having their detractors, TE make very good gear, as long as yours isn't damaged of course. All IMHO of course!

Good morning! This is aimed at Basschatters in the North of England and South of Scotland, but who knows? Basically, I need a fretless bass for a short period of time. I don't want to buy one, and couldn't afford one anyway! My mate, who is the drummer in my band, is having a party for his fiftieth birthday in about six weeks time. Some of our Geordie members may know him - Craig Gill. Craig wants music at the party so he has put a band together (with me playing bass) to play a set of his favourite tunes. Two or three of these really need a fretless bass and I no longer possess one! I could (kind of) approximate the sound on a fretted bass, but it just wouldn't be the same, so I was wondering if some wonderful person would consider loaning me a fretless (a cheap one would be fine) for a few weeks? It could even be a swap, with me loaning you one one of my basses... I would collect or you could drop off so you would know where I live Anyway, I know it's a long shot, but as we say up here "Shy bairns get nowt".
