1. Brilliant Go West clip! I'd forgotten about Graham Edwards. Great player... Oh and these are really good, well-made basses too. Very versatile in the tone department if slightly heavy. Good price too!
 2.
I'm still torn between a Music Man SUB and the Squier CV Precision if anyone can give me a gentle nudge towards either one of those...
I think you are still slightly missing the point. Both are decent basses, but you won't know which one YOU prefer until you try both. And even then, there will be some examples that are better than others. This "problem" is as simple or as difficult as you want to make it!
 3.
my 2 favourite bassists are john myung who knows the bass inside out and the other is steve harris who even though is an absolute monster on the bass would admit to not having much knowledge of theory
Interesting point. From a personal point of view though, I'd far rather listen to Harris than Myung! Again, not from a reverse-snobbery point of view - just because I think SH has a more interesting style and tone. Horses for courses I guess.
 4.
For me playing a bass and theory is a bit like moving to Spain, sure you can enjoy yaself without learning the lingo, many expats dont speak a word, but learning the language makes things a lot easier and even more fun in every possible way!
That's a brilliant analogy!! Love it!
 5.
I wouldnt know if i was playing bass chords or just playing with myself.
Really?!?! I know very little theory. A few years ago I had a few lessons with a well respected local bass teacher. He was amazed at what I could play without knowing what the hell I was doing! That's not to say that I wouldn't like to know some more theory, but I have a busy life and just can't dedicate the time to it that it would require. I have a basic working knowledge of the difference between major and minor scales and thirds, fifths, etc - but that's it. I don't say this because I am proud of it - but just to add to the discussion. It is possible to become a reasonable player with very little theoretical knowledge, but having it certainly won't do you any harm! I don't subscribe to the reverse-snobbery ideology of refusing to learn theory. That's just silly.
 6.
You can pick up a decent Squier precision for around £80 normally, so allow £20 for a new set of strings and you have a totally reliable backup bass.
I got mine on here for £65!! Great neck. A set of DRs and a pickup upgrade and I have a bass that sounds and plays great for a total of about £120. What's not to like?
 7. My advice would be..... slow down! You sound like you are in a big hurry to get something. Don't be. Take your time, try a few basses and amps and then think about it. It's a buyer's market at the moment so if you have cash in hand you are in a strong position to haggle and barter. But DEFINITELY buy used gear. On here if you can as you will be dealing with bass players who usually know what they are talking about!
 8. What do these things sound like and how would they compare to the SG2000 model?
 9. These really are beautifully made basses with a huge range of tones available - and mine was the passive version! These are also quite collectible, so could be quite an investment once the market picks up again. Tempted myself!!
 10.
It's really light, but so resonant. it sustains forever.
Looking at that bridge, I'm not surprised! What type is that? It's real heavy duty stuff...
 11. As someone who regularly stays in Edinburgh, I only see this as good news!
 12.
Here's the M83 track with it, the line starts at about 1:15.
That's nice! It actually sounds very like Marcus Miller in tone and style...
 13. What I love best about Mark is his consummate professionalism. He never makes a mistake or forgets lyrics. Ever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4oY76S6YwG8
 14.
Although badly played slap Bass still sounds like 1000 dyslectic secretaries typing out endless shopping lists.....
Brilliant! Couldn't agree more! Mind if I use that in my sig?
 15.
... what has he doing for music or bass now..?, what is the guy doing
Does it matter? Isn't that his business? Does he owe us anything?
 16. Would someone from Ashington pronounce it "Sairndborg"?
 17. [sub]Can't believe I read all the way through this thread (instead of going straight to the last post as I usually do) to find that the bass has still not arrived!?! [/sub] [sub]BTW, is it a Sandberg?[/sub]
 18.
It looks a lot like an SRT800DX. Not sure the pick ups look wide enough though. They're not on the UK Ibanez site, you need to look on the US site. He does play Warwicks apparently, and others. It certainly says he plays a RDB on the marillion website, don't know what they are
Yeah, I knew about the Warwicks and the Ricks, but I know very little about the Ibanez product range! I love the sound he gets on The Whirlwind and assumed it was a thumb bass . Sound-wise, the bass he uses on that video is very similar to the one he used to record it and I'd like to know more about the bass he used to get that tone... As you say, it is not on the UK site - but I never thought to look at the US one! Cheers.
 19. What is the bass being used here by Pete Trewavas? Looks like an Ibanez, and the closest I can find is the SR300, but the socket position and knob configuration is not quite right (and there's nothing worse that having your knobs oddly configured!). Before seeing this video I assumed that he was using a Warwick or a Rick on the studio recording due to that growl.... Not everyone's taste in tone, I realise, but I like it!
