1. Cool story Chris! It also looks very like the Status on the covers pics of Level 42's "A Physical Presence". Nice bass mate!
 2.
Gigged a Squier PJ Special I got for £60 and it cut through the mix like Conan through a field of daisies!
What you tryin' to say man?! Although I am in two bands at the moment, neither is quite up to gigging speed yet. Having said that the bass I've been mostly using with both bands in full rehearsals is my Squier Affinity P. It just does what I want it to do, and I look forward to gigging with it when the opportunity arises. The Status is in temporary retirement!
 3.
ive got to agree.. i really dont get this..its all in the fingers..? if Victor played a stingray hes not going to sound like Victor on a Foderaw.. yeah he may play the same licks, but the tone will be different..
True to a certain extent, but having seen that clip of Jaco playing a JayDee series II I'm not so sure... Would Mark King still sound like Mark King on a fretless Jazz?
 4.
I also know that other more mass produced basses have also been able to hit that target, but maybe less consistantly. But that doesn't mean you cannot find a gem, that way, every now and then.
Agreed. I currently have four basses. A modest "collection" by the standards of some on here, but for me it's a lot! Status series II worth about £1200 Cort Curbow 5 string worth about £300 No-name Jazz copy cost me £100 Squier affinity P bass cost me £65 Guess which one I play most at the moment? The P. It just feels right in my hands and sounds great. OK, the replacement GFS pickups help there, but the neck is just lovely. The Status is, of course, more versatile and a much higher quality. The J copy does that "J" sound which obviously no P will ever do. The Cort has another string, and three band active EQ.... But I love the P at the moment. There's no accounting for taste is there?
 5. If you want something a bit special, the Bass Doc could make one up for you.... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showuser=4905
 6.
Sticker is optional.
How much for the sticker? In fact, how much for your children?
 7. Jaco Pastorius = Mark King shocker!!!! Is it just me, or did JP just look kinda "wrong" with that JD? Strangely though (or maybe not that strangely), it still sounds like Jaco. Close your eyes and he could be playing his Jazz. It's all in the fingers dudes...
 8. Recently (well OK, a few weeks ago and I'm slow and lazy!) bought a used set of DR strings from Dave. Very prompt postage and the strings were exactly as described if not better! Good comms too. Great deal indeed! Highly recommended.
 9. OK - courgettes it is then...
 10. I think it's probably fair to say that the guy can groove... What amazes me is his incredibly light touch. He has tiny little fingers, his action is obviously very low and his strings light gauge - but he still gets a load of tone there... OK, it gets dull after a few minutes, but that doesn't make it any less impressive.
 11. I do. The guy is the definition of cool. Kinda... He doesn't really do "subtle" though, does he?
 12.
Sledgehammer Fretless, pick, massive compression = one of the most awesome bass sounds of all time
Was there some octaver in there too?
 13.
If you want to buy a really expensive bass then go for it IMO. Also I don't get the obsession with getting a pre-amp.
BRX in "Marcus Miller knows nowt about bass playing" shocker!!
 14.
Flat is actually 2-10-2 Bass Mids High
Which is the setting I use pretty much all the time. Plug and play. No messing about with graphics or switchable parametrics.... Just a good clear tone straight out of the box. Bloody loud too. OK, it would be nice to have the ability to boost the mids a bit - but only for special effects. For a great, driving and authoritative tone this amp simply cannot be beaten in it's price range. And yes, the BFB cabs really do let them shine!!
 15. Only done about 1000 miles. Part of a pair but the other one was punctured beyond repair. I replaced them with another brand and kept this one as a spare... a year later it's still sat in the garden! Too good to grow courgettes in... Newcastle upon Tyne area.
 16.
add another £450 for the custom colour and your looking at a £2k bass
Yeah, problem is that it's your custom colour, and it may not appeal to everyone. I personally like it... but I also cannot justify owning another Status at the moment! Have a bump though...
 17. I am really impressed with the ones I just got from here... http://www.guitarfetish.com/GFS-Bass-Guita...ckups_c_97.html
 18.
Forget about the Basswood stigma, Basswood is a North American word, Basswood = Tilia or in Common English = Lime, So Basswood really is Lime wood.
I didn't know that! Thanks for the info!
 19. I like Jazzes and I like Precisions (and their derivatives). They can be similar or they can be different. Both can be heard in a band mix, but it depends on so many other factors as to how one accomplishes this! People quote Geddy Lee as an example of how well a J can cut through a band mix. Well, yes, that's true - but Rush are only a three piece and Alex's guitar tends to use predominantly the high and upper-mid frequencies - leaving the whole of the mid and low-mid section to Dirk. So it's maybe not surprising that he cuts through - despite his distorted sound (or maybe because of it?!). Also, I have no idea how Mr. Lee sets up his bass, but I suspect that there is slightly more neck pickup in his tone and the bridge one is rolled off a tad. Dunno if this is true, but my ears suggest it as a possibility. Taking another prog-rock example, the bassist from Polish band Riverside has a lovely, rich J sound - both pickups full-on I would guess. It sounds really nice, but does sometimes struggle to find it's own niche within that band's mix. Maybe it's the guitar tone? Maybe the addition of keyboards? The way he seems to get round it is to turn up the volume (OK, to be exact, the engineer/sound man turns him up). Also, as we have established on a number of other threads, everyone's ears are different. Some people just hear some frequencies/sounds better than others.
 20. Having used both Ampeg and BareFaced, and liked both - I have to say that the combination of tone, volume and low mass makes the BFB cabs the outright winner for me. Rich bass and lots of it. And even my 2x15 vintage is a one handed lift if I'm showing off! The Compact is so light that the first time I picked one up, I genuinely thought that they had forgotten to put a driver in it!
 21. It's a shame Grolsch bottles are now so hard to come by. They are great for my home brew too!
 22.
' post='1313145' date='Jul 22 2011, 07:46 PM']I know!! Should I be tempted? I was actually hoping for one with a tweeter. Are you voting for the bassfaced??
Be tempted. Be very tempted. As far as I am aware there has never been a Compact with tweeter, but it could be an option if you wanted to commission one. TBH I'm not sure it needs one. There is a lot more top end in these cabs than you might think. Besides, that's what the EQ on your amp/bass is for! I haven't looked at the ad for this particular Compact, but if you can pick one up for £300-350 what have you to lose? If it's not your thing you could easily sell it on for the same price. They don't come up used very often and when they do they tend to go very quickly...
 23.
But I have noticed a couple of times that a string seems to be dead. I had a dead E once but thought it was my fault. Now this G. I can't afford to deal with quality issues with strings as you never know until you put them on, a day before recording or gigging and that becomes a serious problem.
That's just not on - not at any price, but especially at the premium prices charged for DR strings!
 24.
I had an Affinity P-Bass for a while. Great bass, great player, well put together. If I had to find any "fault" I`d say that the sound was a tad thin, in comparison to my then main bass, a MIM P-Bass. But, I`m sure a swap of pickups and pots would have changed that. I was very surprised at the quality and playability for the price.
I bought mine second-hand off Tom1946 on here. £65. TBH, I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasantly surprised with it's playability - especially the neck. I agree about the "thin" sound. The Bass Doc (who installed my mods for me) used the term "watery", which I think hits the nail right on the head! However, with a "hot" GFS pickup in it, DR Lo-Rider strings, new pots and a bespoke scratchplate (total expenditure around £80) I have a bass that I am proud of for a total of under 150 quid!! In fact I took it and my Status to last night's band rehearsal. I intended to use both, but the Status never came out of it's case!! Now if that's not a recommendation I dunno what is!
