To knock a nail into a piece of wood, I would choose a hammer, but if I chose a piece of parmiggiano...
Well that would just be stupid wouldn't it? Pecorino Romano is your man for nail-insertion related handiwork. Everybody knows that.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Tina Weymouth.... but that's another story.
Faster yes, but better? Err, no.
Somehow I don't think it was he himself who referred to him as the "best bassist in the world". Whatever that means.

Not sure what all the fuss is about. He's only doing what everybody was trying to do back in the mid to late eighties - bassist as typist. OK, he's twenty five years out of date but that's no reason to crucify the guy. In this youtube generation we must be careful not to judge and condemn on the strength of a few out-of-context video clips. Those guys on here who have met him say that he's a nice guy but with a bit of a volume issue. Maybe he's slightly deaf or is unable to hear certain frequencies? Move on I say. There are people far more deserving of a kicking than Mr Clusterf***.

Are these basses still available? Just looked on the SR site and there is no mention of them anywhere!
I would do it. Not as a money maker but just for the pleasure of improving an already decent instrument. I've just completed a Squier P bass upgrade and really enjoyed doing it. To me it was absolutely worth doing and has made what was a playable but dull instrument in to something very pleasing to play and a pleasure to look at.
That's my view too. I'm about to embark on that route with my Squier Affinity P. As it stands it is a nice player, and surely that's the main thing. I've heard of people who have tried to go to the "top of the mountain" and bought "real" Fenders, only to be disappointed with the playability, quality control, tone, etc. So if you already have a bass that pleases you but it can be improved - go for it! I think the neck is probably the crux of the matter. Once you start thinking of replacing the neck, you are basically saying that you don't like that bass. Pickups and hardware fine. Nut, bridge, tuners definitely! You will never get the money back, so do it because you want to do it - not to make a profit as the total will never be worth the sum of the parts. At the end of the process it will still be a Squier!
Its a 1528 so its 400w @ 8ohms
There are two versions of the 1528 though aren't there? The V-series and the "normal" one? Confusing. The 15 bit refers to the diameter of the speakers. The 2 means that there are two of them and the 8 is the impedence of the cabinet... But yes - let's leave this thread to rest in peace now!

Geddy Lee Fender Jazz sig appreciation thread!
Conan replied to Chest Rockwell's topic in Bass Guitars
Any recommendations from any Geddy owners on their preferred string for this bass. I am thinking about a set of rounds or nickel rounds.
I don't own a Geddy, so feel free to ignore what I am about to say! I have just purchased a set of DR Lo-riders, expecting (in all honesty) to be disappointed. Nothing of the sort! They make even my Squier P bass come to life in a way that I wouldn't have dared imagine... Zingy - yes. I expected zing. I love zing. But the deep richness of tone was something I have never experienced in all my years of using Rotosound, D'addario and Elites. They are quite pricey admittedly, but they last and last if I am to believe what I read. Give them a try! -

Some of it seems to be down to the quality and construction materials of the instrument, but I am a pretty heavy-handed player and I like a bit of space! That said, why make life deliberately hard for yourself? I guess what I am saying is I like it "high enough". Never measured it, but I'm estimating around 4-6 mm at fret 12.

I had an MC824DS which I sold last year. Great bass, but rather heavy! The 824 is the passive version with twin humbuckers. The DS part refers to the colour - Dark Stain. I had made mine into a fretless and added an active preamp (well, the Bass Doc did). Some great tones and plenty of variation available. They are quite hard to come by now, but still go for reasonable prices.
I have been plating bass now for about 4 months
You work in a seafood restaurant? Sorry. More seriously.... If it was me in your position I would go along and just check things out the first time. Some jam nights can be very cliquey and what they really mean when they say "come down and join in" is "come down and watch us sad gits that can't get a paying gig". If you like the set-up, the people and the music then go back again next time with your bass. If you are by yourself (sometimes you get entire bands turning up!), let the "house" bass player know, as it is basically his spot you will be taking. You will also be using his backline unless the venue or organiser provides this, so it's only polite to ask him if he minds you changing his settings etc. If you only know four songs, let the organiser know which they are. Chances are there will be other musicians there who will know them and want to play them - but the big issue is finding a singer that knows the tracks. Without that you will end up doing an instrumental version - better known as a "guitar solo". There are some great jam nights around, where the cream of local musicians turn out month after month. Others are not so good...
My first stop would probably be to look at Ibanez, the SR or BTB ranges specifically.
I was going to suggest a Cort Corbow 5 - like mine.... but after watching the Santana Supernatural performance on TV last evening where Benny Rietveld was using a BTB to great effect, I think I would agree with TBM! I think the BTB 5s are a smidgin over £600 new though aren't they? Any particular reason why it has to be new? Is it a gift for someone?

I think he was using a Steinberger on Signals and maybe on P/G too? I personally have stopped caring which instrument he used and just started to enjoy his playing. Too much hearsay and guesswork! Actually, I'd never really noticed before just how much grit/grind/distortion he has used over the years. And the fact that even our practiced ears can't tell whether he is playing a Rick, J, P, Steinberger or Wal (well, actually the Wal is the easiest one to pick out) says a lot about the mantra of the tone being in the fingers!
