Turn down the bridge pickup, roll off the highs and stop worrying about it. It's not exactly the same, but the only people who are likely to notice are going to be bass players.
This. I get some stick on here for suggesting that a J can sound like a P with the neck pickup soloed, but it is close enough for most applications and saves swapping basses... My covers band plays a couple of Stranglers songs and (in a band mix) I find that the J sounds enough like a P to get away with it. Whenever I get a P bass I end up moving it on as it is not as versatile as a J. Horses for courses I suppose, but in a covers band you often need to get a number of different sounds - assuming you want your version to sound anything remotely like the original... YMMV etc...
the one below might be the holy grail of tone.
Yep - that's pretty damn close. -
New Pre-Amp day - Tech21NYC Sansamp GED2112 (from FX Pedal Rental)

On the R40 tour Geddy played a whole range of different basses, yet always sounded like himself And of course debate still rages over which tracks on Moving Pictures feature the Ric and which are played on the Jazz! -
Just buy Ampeg gear but don't bother with any form of cases - you will have a roadworn bass rig after having loaded it in and out of your car a few times, guaranteed!
Very true! But whereas signs of age on guitars and basses can make them more valuable, damage (let's call a spade a spade here, because that's what it is!) to amps and cabs generally reduces their value. I just think it's interesting...

Much as I love Geddy, I'm fairly sure that it would take more than just replicating his set-up to sound like him... -
There is a sector of the market that exists for "relicked" new guitars and basses, yet there seems to be nothing similar for drums, keyboards or amplification. Any ideas why not?

Second hand Markbass amps go for silly prices on here. A LM 2 or 3 would , I feel, fit the bill rather nicely
Thanks - one of my (many) questions is it a good bet to buy used, in terms of durability?
If you buy from Basschat, and from members with lots of good positive feedback, you should be fine

If you are prepared to buy on the used market, your budget will go a lot further.... have a look here: http://basschat.co.u...-cabs-for-sale/ For example: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/308810-tc-electronic-rig-for-sale-rh450-and-k210/

Owen recently expressed an interest in a manky old flightcase I was trying to get rid of... and after some smooth and clear communications the aforementioned case was dispatched to darkest Wales. Can't really call it a "deal" as no money changed hands, but it was an extremely painless transaction that left both of us better off (and me with a space to fill under the spare bed!). Highly recommended! Cheers Owen!

Vanderkley are better than Barefaced cabs, right?!
Conan replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
Agreed. that's the value of buying used from the BC marketplace. Buy a cab, try it out for a few weeks, and if it doesn't quite work for you, you should be able to sell it on again for about the same as what you bought it for. It's almost like hiring gear for free... ! The only down-side is the frustrating wait for the right gear to come up - but you can always try something else in the meantime. For example: http://basschat.co.uk/topic/308597-vanderkley-112-mnt/ http://basschat.co.uk/topic/308078-sold-tks-1126-cabs/page__p__3329251__hl__barefaced__fromsearch__1#entry3329251 http://basschat.co.uk/topic/306710-barefaced-super-12t-photos-finally-added-%3B/page__p__3329938__hl__barefaced__fromsearch__1#entry3329938 http://basschat.co.uk/topic/305687-withdraw-please-barefaced-super-compact-v3/page__p__3312607__hl__barefaced__fromsearch__1#entry3312607 It's quite funny reading back through some of the sale threads. People raving about gear and saying how they will never move it on. Three months later.... -
Vanderkley are better than Barefaced cabs, right?!
Conan replied to Al Krow's topic in Amps and Cabs
I'm not sure that's a fair comparison as the 2126 is a 2x12 with a midrange driver... it is bound to be heavier and more expensive. The 1126 or H115 might be closer. The fact that the speaker in the H115 is 15" diameter makes little difference to the sound that the cab can produce, and at £579 and 14kg it is much closer to the other two (but cheaper!). I have one of the previous spec and it is an excellent cab http://basschat.co.uk/topic/249637-tks-1126-vs-h115-cabs/page__hl__tks h115 -

GK Fusion MB800 - any good? Going rate second hand!
Conan replied to tonyclaret's topic in Amps and Cabs
Be aware that if you have fat sausage fingers (like mine) then the controls are extremely close together on these amps. They are also very easy to move - meaning that they are easily knocked out of position too... It might not bother everyone, but I found it insufferable and sold the amp on... -
New cheap Marcus Miller endorsed range of basses - Sire
Conan replied to Clarky's topic in Bass Guitars
Two weeks since I bought my first sire I can't put it down, it's a keeper.
Get it in your sig then! -
Having said that, for some players, weight is the number one priority. So I can see the attraction.
Yes and no. I value a lightweight cab, but if it sounded rubbish then that's exactly where it would end up. I moved back to my current BF Compact from a pair of Bergantino HS210s. I prefer the sound I get now, and the difference in lugging my rig about is phenomenal. I also tried one of the much-vaunted Genz Benz Neox 212s. Again, a decent cab, but I prefer my Barefaced gear. The only other cab I have tried, liked and stuck with is the TKS H115. It's not as light as the Compact, but is still very manageable. It also sounds great (to my ears) Despite what some people continually state, not everyone uses Barefaced cabs because they are light, and only because they are light!
Love the engineering and thought that go into barefaced cabs, but i could not live with something built out of 9mm plywood !.....
Try one! They feel surprisingly robust and after a while you don't think about the construction - just the lightness and the sound.
