1.
When I test drive a new car I put the wipers on fast, headlights main beam, stereo on max volume, 7500 rpm and dump the clutch. It's the only way to get a feel for what it can do.
Brilliant! Don't forget the foglights though!!
2.
I think this narrows down the right Vs wrong
I love slap, and I think this guy is awesome... but after about 90 seconds I was wishing he would play some fingerstyle or use a pick! That's the whole point of slap to me - It's great for an effect or to simply give a different style or sound. But used all the time it becomes very wearing and fatiguing on the ears. Well, mine anyway!
3.
Remember: "Slap don't kill people - people kill people with slap".
Fixed.
4. Mt Status is my pride and joy. When I bought it, it was horrendously expensive. It is beautiful to look at and lovely to play. Fortunately, it is also pretty bullet-proof! It has been well gigged, dropped a couple of times, bashed into mike stands and cymbals, sweated on, doused in beer (whenever my mouth can't catch it first!) and many other abuses. I am happy for young players to use it - because I remember what I would have felt like as a 16 year old if i could have played on something like that. Karma and all that. It's a tool, but a tool that I love and feel as though it is part of me. Like a carpenter with his favourite hammer maybe?
5. Slap can be all things to all people. I know this to be a fact, because I agree with myself on this point. Horses for courses, etc. Done with taste and tact it can be beautiful. I stopped going to music (and especially bass) shows many years ago for this very reason. The last one was back in 1987, and the Goodfellow stand sounded like a typing pool. I quote: "Yuckity-yuckity-twat-yuckity-yuckity-twat-yuckity-yuckity-juckity-juckity-yuckity-yuckity-twat-twat-twat". Bastards.
6.
So yes..a 500watt amp..which is often the norm in nominal power ratings, and a cab that can take 600watts should suit you fine. Nobody has to use all that power but it is good to have it all in hand, IMO.
Like this one? 7. It would need to be a real moment of madness for me to consider selling or trading my Status series II. I have actually thought about it a couple of times, but then I wake up and remember that it is not only the best bass I have ever played (for me), but that I have 25 years of history with it. It was my first serious buy when I had my first proper job and I just can't imagine no longer owning it! Until, maybe, a Warwick Thumb 5 with a thru neck comes along.... Eek!
8. I need to stop looking at this. I'm starting to have silly thoughts. Like, for example "would the OP be interested in trading his V4 for my BFB Vintage and LH500?". Of course he wouldn't. Silly idea. I am mad to even suggest it... And the fact that I'm in Edinburgh next weekend has nothing to do with it either.
9.
I reckon £700 is a fair price for a collectible rare piece of Trace history.
I think you're probably right! Sadly, that's more than I've got to spend at the moment - so unfortunately, I'm out. And dead jealous of whoever gets this!
10. Oh... that looks complicated!! Good price though!
11. Ooooh! That head would sound just simply incredible with the Trace V-series 1528 cab that I have up for sale! Might even be tempted myself.... How much would you be looking for on the amp?
12. This. Sadly, it sold before I had the chance to persuade Mrs C what a great investment it might turn out to be... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=121791&hl=1966
13. It breaks my heart to see so little love for a quality piece of kit at a brilliant price... if I didn't already have two 2x15s, I'd love this one! Great deal folks!!
14. I really like my Cort Curbow 5 - and it only cost £322 from Thomann last year! A bit limited in tones due to the single pick-up, but it is a Bartolini and the active tone controls allow for plenty of shaping. The body shape may not be to everyone's taste, but it balances very well, is light, and plays well.
15. From the Trace Elliot V-range. Designed to be paired with the V4, V6 or (if you can get your hands on one) V8 amps. Not the usual black tolex covered affair, but a very glamorous sparkly green carpet and grille cloth. I got this in a trade about six months ago, but then got my BareFaced Vintage soon after. I love both cabs, but storing and using two big 2x15s is slightly over the top! For that reason, I am letting this one go. A tough choice, but the Vintage is more transportable due to it's lightness. This particular cab has been very well looked after as for much of its life it was housed in a full flight case. It now has a custom-made Roqsolid padded cover with matching green piping! Smart! Condition is very good, even allowing for the fact that its about 15 years old. The only visible marks are a small chip in the paint on one of the handles and a small part near the bottom right where there looks like a very small tear in the carpet but you could probably just go over that with a black marker and you'll never notice it. It weighs 45kg. Heavy, yes - but very easy to move due to the large casters fitted by the previous owner (Delberthot - thanks to him for some of the text from his original ad), and the fact that although it is tall and wide, it is not particularly deep. The dimensions are 74cm wide, 84cm high (including casters) and 36cm deep. The cab is rated to handle 500w @ 8ohms and has both 1/4" jack and XLR inputs and outputs. The sound it produces is deep and rich, with creamy highs. It is certainly not boomy or wooly in any way!! A very classy tone with my LH500. I love this cab, and would ideally like to keep it - but Mrs C is complaining about the space it takes up and the fact that I rarely use it... Due to the weight, local pick-up would be the obvious option, although I am happy to drive a reasonable distance from Newcastle to meet up if it helps. Open to offers, but looking for £250 for this wonderful cab. Thanks for looking.
This guy seems to manage alright: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrrutA5u8pg...feature=related
Bloody hell!!
17.
I wish i had a russian big muff!
There are websites for that sort of thing I believe... What do you mean by a 'Russian' big muff though? Made in Russia? Where are the non-Russian ones made? What is the difference?
18.
Why can't you buy them anymore?
Well, you could certainly buy that one...
19. It sounds to me as if what he is talking about is providing a bass set-up for a rehearsal studio, rather than a rig for an individual. His comments about not knowing what bassists are gonna do almost makes sense then. Hired gear tends to get a pretty hard time, so I guess having the 18 gives a slightly more 'robust' rig in case of detuned metal mania... particularly if you are only going to but cheap to mid-range speaker cabinets (as shown in the choice of the Ashdown MAG410). So maybe he is only talking partial garbage?
20. The Assembly is a top venue. Shame it's so far away from me! Sounds like a great gig!
21.
Hi there, I'm new to Basschat (as a 'poster'). I've been reading the boards for quite a while, but your bass has made me join! I am a big fan of Paul Rose's work, and would like this bass. I don't really know the 'protocol', though. If it's still for sale, could you email me? Thanks.
The usual protocol is to send the seller a PM. That's certainly what I do!
22. Interesting comments guys. Thanks. I still have no idea what I should be looking at!! I have this audition on thursday where I need something to beef up the tone for two tracks - Chilis 'By the way' and Muse's 'Hysteria'. As I have no idea whether I will get the gig I don't want to actually buy a pedal, so I borrowed one from the school's music department! Skinflint? Me? Anyway, I gave it a bit of a tryout last night, and to my ears it does a reasonable job on Hysteria. Good enough for an audition anyway. If I get the gig I will consider further investment! The pedal in question? Now, don't laugh.... A Behringer UM300! Not even a bass distortion box! These things retail at around £20 brand new FFS!! Maybe my ears aren't as discerning as I thought/hoped!
23.
I generally pick the tone for the band, as in whatever I think the band needs, so "my" tone changes depending on which band I`m with.
Mine even varies from one track to the next! Especially if it is covers. For example, I have an audition on thursday where I have been asked to play three tracks, each of which demands (to me anyway) a totally different sound... Hard to Handle - Black Crowes. Pretty much flat EQ with the neck pick-up selected. Slight boost in the midrange. Hysteria - Muse. More bass and treble, with a slight mid-scoop. Distortion! Gentler touch to get the speed, so higher volume. By the way - RHCP. Slight cut on the treble, slight mid-boost, bass about flat. Aggressive fingerstyle. And that's just for three tracks!!
24. Is the effect noticeable when the bass is played acoustically? If not, could your EQ be part of the problem? When I used Trace amps, I found that I could alter the 'volume' of individual strings by cutting or boosting certain frequencies.... If your amp and/or cab have a certain voicing, they could be accentuating some of the strings and attenuating others. Possibly!
25. Rounds all the way for me. Never played a set of flats that I liked. But then again, I haven't really tried very hard!
