There is a barefaced COMPACT (1x15) in the forsale section at £330 In reality its going to be a lot louder and in some cases lighter than alot of what has been suggested.
Took the words right outta ma mouth!! These cabs really are incredibly loud and due to their sensitivity don't need too much juice to make them shout! Also, they are so light that you would think that there was no driver in them at all!
Surely the difference will also depend on the efficiency (sensitivity) of the new speaker cab?
Sounds like he's changing from one Peavey to another - so the sensitivity should be similar, but with far fewer speakers and less power. However you figure it, that has to result in a drop in perceived volume...

So the general consensus seems to be that there is no simple answer to this, and that it depends on the context, the band, the situation, the musicians, the track in question, the type of gig, the complexity or simplicity of the original bass part, the attention span and technical ability of the bass player.... anything else I've forgotten? To simplify things by further complicating them; I think it also depends on the stage the bass player is at. When I was young and starting off playing bass, I used to try to play every part note-perfect. As I was starting off with predominantly Rush tracks, that took a while! The process of learning a certain player's lines note-for-note is what contributes to the individual "style" that we all develop later in our playing careers. If the range of influences is wide, then so will be our own final (if it ever is final) style. As noted over in the "most influential bass players" thread, my style is probably an uneasy blend of Geddy Lee, Mark King, Steve Harris, Marcus Miller, David Margen and Stanley Clarke! Of course, I don't really sound like any of them ( I wish I could!) but many fellow bass players familiar with their work would be able to spot certain licks that they would associate with some of those players in my playing. I hope! Now that I have my own "style", I tend not to play cover tracks note-for-note any more. Not exactly anyway. I will get them close enough that everyone in the audience (bar the bass players) will think that I've nailed it. In most cases that's enough. Also, because my style is different from, say, John Myung - I may never be able to play "Pull me Under" as he plays it. So why bother? Sometimes, close enough is close enough. As others have said, most punters would far rather watch a tight band enjoying themselves than a complete set of note perfect copies. I guess its down to the subtle difference between a cover version and a copy.

I'd have thought that your Warwick cab alone was worth more than the whole Peavey rig - depending on condition of course. Also, the Peavey 4x10 is probably nearly the same weight as your Warwick! I'd keep the big German if I was you... I have no experience of either amp, but as others have said, Peavey amps are virtually immortal and indestructible!!

Steve just bought my Zoom effects pedal. Great communications and an extremely fast payment. Highly recommended!!
I preffer the tone of the passive Shuker over the active Ibanez. What do you guys play?
Is that a fair comparison though? How many times more did the Shuker cost than the Ibanez? Isn't what you are really saying "My expensive handmade bass sounds better than my mid-range/cheap factory made one?". Just playing Devil's Advocate there!

My Status has a by-pass switch. I even use it sometimes as it does sound different in passive mode. Other than that, I can get just about any sound I want through the active treble/bass cut/boost. Having said that, the last passive-only bass I owned was a Fender Musicmaster back in the mid 1980s... Oh no I forgot - my Jazz copy is passive! Oops! The tonal variation I can get out of that bass is pretty impressive. But then again, what would it be like with a pre-amp installed?

Yes. Nothing like a bit of "easy listening" on a friday afternoon...

Hmmmmm.... I'm not sure that the neck on the Roya five string is bolted on securely enough.
As for driving it, I've only begun to realise how under-powered my Hartke 200w amp is, but Alex says it'll be fine for the Compact. I have asked him, however, to advise me on the most compatible amp for the Compact in case I want to change my Hartke at a later date, and I'm awaiting his reply. Will let you know. Feel free to PM me if you have ano other questions. Cheers. Bob
I know that Alex has spoken highly of the Hartke LH500 and LH1000 in the past - so you may not even have to change manufacturer! To be fair though, if he suggests that your current amp will do the job he is probably correct. He certainly knows his stuff.

These are great cabs - very rich and full sounding, and not at all "slow and thumpy" as some might describe a can loaded with a fifteen! If anyone in the North east of England is interested in this and lacks transport, I will be passing through Haddington next weekend and could pick up and drop off for a small petrol consideration...
I have known Dave for years, [and he does lurk here , although not very often] And i do know he will not come on here and get involved in a public flogging Muso bashing/debate of work colleagues. Sure he has better things to do. Like getting yet another sponership deal.
He was great in the Mummy too....

As others have done, this is my list is chronological order of when they influenced me rather than how much.... Geddy Lee - Still my favourite. How he can play that stuff and sing at the same time.... awesome. Mark King - Yes, as I grew up and discovered "taste" I realised how over the top his playing is; but still... Steve Harris - Then followed the introduction of the ring finger on my right hand! Great band man and an under-rated player. David Margen - Dunno what else he has done, but I love his work with Santana Stanley Clarke - The all round master. He really can do it all! Other honourable mentions who have influenced me in either their style, tone, image or a hundred other ways: Duck Dunn (mainly for the Blues Brothers!), Les Claypool, Bruce Foxton, JJ Burnel, Jeff Ament, Pino Palladino, John Giblin, Davey Paton, John Deacon, Larry Graham, Louis Johnson, Marcus Miller, Phil Lynott, Lemmy, Geezer Butler..... I could go on!
yep, Dave Margen, check this.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hp7w6x1Fe7Y
Hmmmm.... I love the recorded version of "Runnin'", but this live version is not so great. Thanks for posting though! I still think he's a great player!
This has to be my favourite fretless bass recording to date if I take Jaco out of the equation. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bfh3p0qcSLs What outstanding fretless bass tracks spring to your mind?? No Jaco !!
That's creepy! I saw the thread title and my first thought was "Aquamarine!!" - then I opened it to see this as the OP!! Cool choice, and one of my all-time favourites. Nothing flashy or over the top, just tasteful and lifts the track to somewhere sublime... David Margen isn't it?

Is the problem with you being able to hear yourself, or is is that you are being drowned out in the overall out-front mix? I guess the two problems will have potentially different solutions... With one small cab down at floor level (as I assume it is), you may notice an improvement by simply lifting the cab off the floor (and therefore closer to your ears). You will lose a bit of low end, but I'm guessing that the way you are currently driving your set-up means that you have to cut low end anyway to achieve maximum volume... Also, without knowing "your tone" it might be possible to cut through more by boosting the mids? I am speculating here of course!

Who's tone would you swap with if you couldnt keep your own?!

Geddy Lee. His modern super-growly/clangy jazz bass-with-brand-new-strings zinginess please!
