1.
Yes, ive done a number of deals on here now, just a quickie to let you know im safe!
Indeed! Sorry for the delay, but just to add some positive feedback to Stephen's thread... I bought his BareFaced Vintage from him a few weeks ago. It was a complicated exchange due to geographical and financial constraints, but thanks to his patience we both ended up happy! Best wishes mate, and I'm really enjoying the cab too!! Highly recommended
 2.
The head's a Markbass LM Tube 500 and the cab is an Epifani UL410 Series II.
Nice!
 3. Depends on how accurate the ratings on both the amp and the cab are.... but it certainly shouldn't do any harm at all!
 4. I wonder how much of this has to do with the instrument that we learned on? In most cases, this would be a pretty cheap, rough-and-ready bass with all sorts of inadequacies... OK, maybe not everyone - but I know that my first bass was very ordinary in terms of action and playability! How long we spent wrestling with this instrument probably also had an effect on our preference for a low or otherwise action. The sooner we moved up to a decent bass, the sooner we got used to a decent (for most people, read "low") action. Those of us who manfully struggled away for years on a cheap bass may well have had our playing style influenced by that bass and found it awkward to switch to a 'better' instrument with lower action.... Eventually, when funds came along and we upgraded to a quality bass, out style and preferences were already set to a degree. Just a theory!
 5.
IMHO you're getting too paranoid. Have you ever tried a Jazz Bass? Every decent, plain simple, traditional Jazz Bass can either cuts through the mix or sit within, and can be full and deep but also growly and defined.
Agreed. Yes, you will get subtle differences between individual instruments, but these will be insignificant compared to the differences caused by changing strings, cabinets and amplifiers! Try lots of basses (as you aim to do) and buy the one that you like the best after playing it - rather than making your mind up based on videos and comments made on manufacturers' websites! If you are dead set on getting a Squier/Fender Jazz, there are some genuine experts on this site who could give you far more specific guidance than I ever could - but I suspect that at the end of the day they would still agree that the way forward is to try lots of basses and buy the one you like the feel and sound of the best. It's not rocket science.... unless you want to make it so!
 6. Depends on how you play, what gauge your strings are and lots of other factors! I hate a really low action, but I am a rather heavy-handed player....
 7.
Whatever package I get, it has to be able to deliver in a wide range of venues (as my present package has easily done), from small venues to hotel ballrooms. My bass playing style is 'standard' (eg, no fancy slaps) and I don't need loads of brightness, more interested in a controlled bottom end.
I would definitely recommend that you have a look at the BFB Compact. 8.
BTW, anyone interested in buying a Hartke Model 2000 Transient Attack 200w head with an Ampeg SVT-115E Classic cab? Both mint! Bob
Try sticking an advert in this thread? Forum rules mean that you have to state a price though... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=20
 9. Ten inch woofers coupled with ten inch tweeters? Sounds good to me!!
 10.
...many will say they have tried this and ending going back to the heavy kit...
And that's where personal preference comes into the equation. It all depends on what you wish to sound like and how strong you are. If the tone that you desire can only be achieved through the use of heavy gear then you need to face up to the energy-sapping truth or hire a roadie. On the other hand, if 'your' tone can be found via lightweight gear then you are doubly happy!! On the third hand (which few of us born outside Norwich are lucky enough to possess), the compromise involves balancing the load-in/take-down weight (mass!) against the sound you ideally wish to hear. From a personal point of view, I feel that I have achieved that with the BFB Vintage - but you may disagree! Or YMMV as more web-savvy folk may phrase it... It's your money dude - do your homework and purchase at will!
 11.
But specific speaker diameters don't have a sound!
Maybe not, but do they have a colouration?
 12. This belongs to my son, who got it for Christmas last year. He doesn't want to sell it, but due to an unexpected mobile phone bill he has to raise some cash quickly!! In very good condition, complete with the original box and manual. Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal With Built-In Expression Pedal The high-quality of the Zoom G1x makes it very useful to any guitarist on a budget who can't buy ALL the stompboxes they really want, and the inbuilt tuner, drum-machine and expression pedal ensures that this is a great value-for-money product! The G1x provides a variety of effects categories: Comp/EFX, Drive, EQ, ZNR/Amp modeling, Modulation, Delay, and Reverb. For added flexibility, the G1x features a built-in expression pedal for control over effects such as flange, wah, and other effects. This Zoom ships loaded with 40 presets, many of which are modeled on the signature sounds of famous guitarists. The G1x will run for up to 12 hours continuously on four AA batteries. The G1x pedal provides a total of eight modules with 54 effect types ranging from standard to advanced. Emulations of the historic sounds of the MXR Dynacomp, Vox Wah, or Crybaby Wah. Two types of chorus. Five types of reverb. Harmonized Pitch Shifter. Use delay and echo settings with up to five seconds of delay time. The G1x offers realistic drum sounds based on PCM samples, arranged in a variety of rhythm patterns for different musical styles. The 40 rhythm variations include steady 8-beats for rock and pop, funky 16-beats, jazzy 4-beats, shuffles for blues styles, and more. Features 21 amp and stompbox models. 54 high-quality effects. Built-in drum machine. Auto-chromatic guitar tuner. Zoom ZFX-3 24-bit/96kHz digital multi-effects processor. 54 Effects types/8 Modules. 40kHz frequency response. Built-in drum machine and harmonized pitch shifter. 80 patches: 40 user defined and 40 preset patches. Built-in Expression Pedal. Operates on 4 AA batteries or included AC power adapter. Brand new, these appear to cost anywhere between £60 and £130.... so I think it is realistic to ask for FORTY POUNDS POSTED (within the UK - more if the buyer wishes it shipped further). Thanks for looking!
 13.
electronic stuff as well..... Just need to get down to a few music shops and have a play!
Spot on! The TC gear is not as light as some other stuff, but does seem to be pretty well regarded by those that use it. Good call.
 14.
If that's the case, why a 6x10" when you can get the same volume using fewer 12"/15" speakers?
Possibly because he said that he is looking for a particular colouration, and that can only be achieved with speakers of a certain diameter? Also, there are currently no ten inch speakers used in the BFB range (as far as I am aware) so maybe this new cab is aimed at a very specific target market? Just guessing...
 15. Hi Dr_Tom You are certainly not the first to look at the gear that has served you well for years and yearn for something less heavy! What you will also find on this forum is that many members will advise you to consider using exactly what they use! There is wisdom in such a recommendation, as it usually means that they have tried many of the alternatives themselves and therefore you can potentially benefit from their experiences (and mistakes!). There are a few manufacturers that do 'lightweight' cabs, and you will hear people on here singing the praises of one whilst slagging off the others. Unfortunately, the only pattern to these thoughts is that there is no pattern. So this is where it comes down to your own ears, back and wallet! If I was you, I certainly wouldn't buy brand new, but take advantage of the gear for sale threads on this very forum. http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showforum=20 Not only are there some great deals to be had, but you can also pick the brains of the people who are doing the selling. Why did that particular set-up not work for them? If you can find members close to where you live, you may even be able to arrange to try out their gear to help make up your mind - that's the kind of forum this is! From memory, there are several members close to Stoke (didn't you say that you were in Stoke?), at least one of whom works in a music shop... PeteAcademy? Oh yes, before I go.... Maybe have a look at the BareFacedBass range?
 16. I was and still am a fan. I really love the bass line and sound in "William, it was really nothing" among others.
 17. He was always a hero of mine, but I never realised just how knowledgeable the guy truly is... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gwpGXfHmY-A...feature=related
 18. Yep - look at the for sale section on this very forum! Two hundred quid won't get much on the brand new market, but some extremely good gear at great prices come up regularly on here. Even stuff like Trace Elliot, Marshall, Ampeg, Ashdown, Roland, etc should be well within your reach if you are prepared to be patient... Highly recommended - but also rather addictive! Even if you can't cobble together another ton, might be worth a speculative offer on this beast - a fantastic combo at a brilliant price... http://basschat.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=105357
 19.
But. It's a solo performance and I can't/won't see the bass guitar as a solo instrument.
Surely any instrument, played in isolation, becomes a 'solo' instrument? I'm no fan of over-the-top bass solo playing for it's own sake - but if someone can demonstrate their virtuosity in an impressive yet tuneful way, then they have my respect. I agree about "Sharp dressed man" though...
 20.
Indeed they are. We have a selection of large cabs coming out next year though: Super Fifteen - full-range 2x15" (two Compacts in one box)
Ooooohh!
 21. Are these still for sale? Brilliant cabs at a great price... have a bump on me!
 22. I agree to an extent. However, if I am pleased with my tone, I enjoy playing more. If I enjoy playing, I tend to play better and with more enthusiasm. That makes the band sound better and everyone is happy. If I can't get a tone that pleases me, I find playing a bit of a chore sometimes. That can't be good.
 23.
Probably a much better idea to just get a Status Hiscox case. Carrying full flights has lost its fun element for me and I'd prefer the lighter option. If you want to contact BSH, drop me a PM and I'll pass on the company's details. If you do PM, let me have the serial of your bass - it's probably very close to mine - I'm not sure if mine arrived in '85 or '86 (probably the former).
Thanks for the info! Ironically, I used to have the serial number of my Status in my sig, but I thought it came across as a bit "anoraky"!! It is actually #263, and it was completed in late 1986. I'd never though of looking at Hiscox, as I assumed that only Status would make Status cases - given the unusual shape of their guitars. Would a new case cost less than the hundred quid you paid for the re-foam work? I totally agree about the unwieldy nature of the original flight cases. I'm always bashing it off walls, doors, etc!! I'm highly unlikely to ever sell my Series II, but if I did I could obviously sell it with the original case AND lighter Hiscox version! Thanks for that - I'll have a look now! Geoff EDIT: Just looked at the status website and they sell moulded cases for £68!! Excellent! Cheers again lozbass!
 24.
Never heard of the sleaze sisters to be honest, we actually filled our bass slot a month ago but a couple of us are planning a blues/jazz side project which we aim to gig only once or twice a month and thought that might be something that would suit your availability?
Possibly! Why not drop me a PM with a few more details? Ages, material, planned itinerary, etc? I look forward to hearing from you
 25. When I use effects, which is rare, I tend to use them as exactly that - to create an effect. For that reason I am extremely unsubtle in their use and the reaction tends to be along the lines of "what the feck was that?!" In a previous life, in a jazz/funk/soul band; I used chorus quite a lot, but I'm not sure anyone really noticed much. I'm not really into subtlety so now I just try to keep my signal path as pure and clear as possible to cut through. The only effects unit I currently own is a twenty-or-so year old Yamaha EMP100 that I keep trying (unsuccessfully!) to sell. It makes some really silly arpeggio type sounds which I like to play about with but could never use in a band scenario...
