Where to?
I was wondering that.... If it's already at the end of the horn, as I presume it is, its not as though you can move anywhere useful. Best advice I had is to get a very wide strap made out of some kind of non-slip material (leather with a soft inner surface is good). Also, try playing about with the position you play in... neck horizontal, neck at a steeper angle, etc. You may not be able to stop the neckdive (without shaving the neck and headstock significantly) but at least you can make it more manageable.
Hi Conan Interesting! Can you put your finger on what that 'sound' is?
Not really... I always find it difficult describing sounds! Lots of people use the term "punchy" but I am never sure exactly what it means. I think the compact sounds clear, strong and powerful. It seems to be strong on the middle part of the mid-range... Best I can do I'm afraid!
-
It's interesting that even though I used the same cab with a totally different amp and bass (LH500 and Status), there is a clearly identifiable "sound" on WoT's recording that I remember well! So maybe the idea that cabs themselves have a characteristic sound is not unreasonable? It certainly isn't slow and muddy to my ears! Be interesting to hear it compared to the Vintage...

Anybody else having trouble using the 'search' facility?
I've got a 2x15" for sale but ain't light
I know! I've been looking at it! If it was 4 ohm I think I might be tempted, especialy as you are fairly easy to get to when I'm up in Edinburgh... But I think the time has come to explore lightweight cabs this time. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though!
-
It's looking increasingly likely that my next speaker solution will be a lightweight 2x15 - Possibly Barefaced Vintage or Purple Chili PCB215NT. So... I need to shift my trusty twosome to make houseroom and generate funds! Would rather shift them as a pair, but if you only want one of them I'll consider that too. http://www.soundslive.co.uk/common/showima...MAG410TDEEP.jpg Most of you will be familiar with this spec, although mine are the previous model, so they have the blue speakers, carpet covering and metal grilles. They are 8ohm cabs and are rated at 450w each. Pictures of the actual cabs to follow when Mrs C comes home and shows me how to use the camera... but they are in decent condition with no buzzes, rattles, etc. http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews...ep+Cabinet/10/1 For the money (these cost £259 new) these cabs are excellent. They provide deep smooth bass, crunchy highs and a good, tight midrange. I have played an Ampeg SVT-200T and Hartke LH500 through them and have been happy with the sound. I just find them a bit heavy and bulky for shifting in and out of cars and rehearsal studios at the moment! They are both about 18 months old, and were bought or traded from fellow BC forum members earlier this year. I am in Newcastle upon Tyne and would prefer the buyer to collect due to the size and mass of the cabs. I am happy to meet half way or even drop them off for petrol money though. So come and get some serious volume and tone for a great price! Looking for £300 or serious offers around this price. Not really interested in trades at the moment (unless you've got a lightweight 2x15!). But it never hurts to ask does it?
large norks tend to go floppy and droop at a younger age than smaller perter firmer breasts.....anything bigger than a handful is likely to get veiny and hang round the waist by the time she hits 30 or drops sprogs....so I tend to avoid 'em.
I can live with that!
So who plays bass for the money? I know I don't. I do get paid but that's not my motivation.
That puts you in a pretty privileged position then, I would say. But I still don't see how or why that gives you the right to question or criticise the motivations of others...
Absolutely Why would anyone want to flip McD burgers when they could be creating unique culinary experiences?
And, of course, your band does exactly that? Also, not everyone who enjoys cooking wants to be a Michelin-starred superchef. I personally am a good cook and I love cooking... but sometimes I crave a fish finger sandwich. And no, that's not a euphemism! )
Many venues ,say 20 years ago, would happily put on an originals band but these days insist on covers only.....if these covers bands didn't exist and the venue wanted live music they'd still be putting on originals.
Or maybe that venue would no longer exist? Many venues have realised that there is money to be made from putting on live music - especially on night that would otherwise be quieter. OK, they have to pay the band a few quid, but if they get 100 punters in who all drink 5 pints, they have made a tidy profit on something like a tuesday night. Whether that band is playing covers, originals or a mixture is largely immaterial. If they have a following and can prove that to the venue they will usually get bookings. Edit. Damn, I should have read JTUK's post before saying that!!
To be fair, this one is a slightly different angle. it's more like: 'I TRAVEL THE WORLD AND GET LOADS OF MONEY FOR PLAYING ORIGINAL MATERIAL. THE REST OF YOU ARE LOSERS.'
That's certainly how I interpreted the OP's comments. Twigman (or should I call you "Ian"?) I've just been listening to some of your band's material on Amazon. It's OK. Rather eighties-retro, but I like that kind of stuff! What does surprise me slightly though, is that the band have been going since 1981 - and you appear to have only joined last year (according to the website). So what were you doing when the band were "building an audience" back in the eighties and nineties? I ask just out of interest... Like most of us on here (I suspect) I have done my time in originals bands. Some of them were actually quite good and had a decent local following. One or two actually got to that fabled "let's all give up our day-jobs and move down to London coz we've got major-label interest" stage of bollocks. So I know what you mean about the differences between playing covers and playing originals. Having said that, sometimes to fill out a setlist those originals bands would.... wait for it.... slip a few covers in!!!! Did this dilute our gene pool? Did this cost us our musical integrity? Of course it bloody didn't! In the intervening years (I'm 44 now with a house and three kids) I have played in several other bands - some were plain covers bands, some were covers bands that slip the odd original in, some were OBs (sorry, got sick of typing "originals bands" - damn, just done it again!) that play some covers.... At the end of the day, music genuinely CAN be all things to all people. I don't understand why you come across as so snobby and arrogant when many of us will be getting as much enjoyment out of our misical experiences as you so clearly do from yours. And so will our audiences! Surely that's all that counts??
-
As we are a new band, we are still putting the setlist together, but the two hot favourites for opening numbers are Van Halen's Runnin' with the Devil (not inspired by the movie Little Nicky at all!) and Steve Stevens' (What were his parents thinking about?) Atomic Playboys. Sadly, we lack the hair.
Ok so would a 250 watt trace head with a 4x10 cab be load enough for a reasonably sized gig, say 250 people? Any reasons why theyre loade than other makes?
Depends on the cab. If it's a TE cab then it will probably be 8ohm, which means that the amp will be putting out (IIRC) 175 watts. If it's a decent cab then you might be OK. Also, "250 people" is not really an indication of how "big" the gig or venue is. If its 250 people in an outdoor marquee then I would think you might struggle. Will you have PA support or play purely on backline? If it's a room with decent acoustics and you have PA support then you are only really using the cab as an onstage monitor, so it will be plenty loud enough... There are a lot of variables to consider! Why are they loud? Quality of components? Slightly under-estimating their actual output? Well-designed speaker cabinets? Could be lots of reasons, but it would need someone more technically-minded than myself to be able to explain it!
-
Difficult to equate loudness to power output, but I always found TE amps to be conservatively rated. My AH250 through two 8 ohm cabs was hugely loud, and was never pushed for volume at any gig...
